Shadowland.

Location

New York City, primarily centered around Hell’s Kitchen, the Lower East Side, and portions of Midtown Manhattan. The affected zone—referred to as the Shadowland Territory—exists as a metaphysically sealed district layered over the physical city, anchored by the Hand’s former strongholds and newly constructed Foot Clan citadels.

Overview

The Shadowland Incident occurred in the immediate aftermath of the multiversal conflict known as Final Crisis, during a period of global instability following the confirmed destruction of Darkseid. With Earth’s heroes and villains alike depleted from the war against Apokolips, a power vacuum emerged—most notably in New York City. During the climactic stages of Final Crisis, New York had been defended largely by the criminal alliance of Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) and Shredder, the latter secretly being the Utrom warlord Ch'rell. Their partnership, reinforced by the extradimensional forces of the Kraang and their Technodrome, successfully repelled large-scale incursions from Apokoliptian forces, granting them significant territorial leverage in the city. In the fragile peace that followed, Shredder enacted a long-prepared contingency: Shadowland.
Unlike its traditional association with Daredevil and the Hand, this iteration of Shadowland was a coordinated ritual led by the Foot Clan’s mystics under the guidance of Kitsune. Drawing upon forbidden oni magic, the ritual bound the essence of the ancient demon known as the Tengu Shredder to a metaphysical barrier enveloping key sections of New York. This Shadowland Barrier serves as both shield and weapon:

  • It prevents direct incursion by high-tier superhumans, cosmic entities, and divine beings.
  • It reacts violently to the presence of overwhelming power, siphoning and converting that energy into sustenance for the Tengu Shredder.
  • It creates a feedback loop, whereby attempts to breach the territory with force only strengthen the entity bound within.

At peak potential, the Tengu Shredder’s power has been observed to rival entities such as Trigon, making any large-scale assault on Shadowland an existential risk. With this system in place, the Foot Clan effectively established an autonomous regime within New York City—one that cannot be easily dismantled by conventional superhero intervention. Even organizations such as the Avengers or independent actors like Kingpin are forced to operate indirectly, relying on subterfuge, proxy forces, or low-signature infiltration. Shadowland thus represents a strategic inversion of power dynamics: a domain where the strongest beings are the most restricted, and where mysticism supersedes brute force.

Foot Clan

The Foot Clan are a group of warriors and assassins that The Shredder created 1000 years ago in Feudal Japan. The Shredder, who in this series is a long-lived Utrom, has led the Clan since its creation and has turned it into a fearsome and secret group present across the world. The Foot emblem is a red, trident-like footprint (hence the name of the clan), an inverted version of the "Three-Toed Sign of the Dragon", the symbol of the five warriors who had defeated the original demon known as the Shredder in 300 AD. Thanks to the Shredder's knowledge of Utrom technology, the Clan has weapons and equipment centuries ahead of human technology.
The Foot Elite from the 2003 TV series appeared to have the ability to teleport in a barrage of smoke and surprise anyone at anytime. They were also extremely fast and skilled with their weapons. According to Master Splinter in The Shredder Strikes Back, Part 2, they "are the deadliest of his warriors. Lethal assassins". Each one carries their own special weapon: a trident, a twin-bladed sword, a yari, and a battle axe. The Utrom Shredder often sends them out on special missions that need to be accomplished quickly and effectively.

Somehow after the events of the defeat of the Demon Shredder and the year the Turtles were stuck in the future in Fast Forward, Master Khan gained control of the Foot, who now dressed in Cyber Foot armor. Under Khan's rule, they were in a gang war against Hun and the Purple Dragons. Once Cyber Shredder appeared, he took control and it was Khan's mission to bring him back into reality. Many believe Khan was once an Elite Foot since his theme is the same theme used whenever the Elite Foot appeared. The ninjas have newer dark blue garb with the addition with their silver masks. Their masks have three red eyes.

Tengu Foot Clan

The Foot Mystics, also known as Heralds of the Shredder or Mystic Ninjas, are five elemental entities who each controls a classic element: Metal, Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. They all have the ability to regenerate body parts or shape their own bodies. Their bodies themselves are made of the element they command. Also known as "Heralds of the Shredder", Foot Mystics were followers of original Shredder, Oroku Saki aka Tengu Shredder, having joined the latter during his rise of power after merging his soul with that of Shredder Tengu and attaining tremendous mystical powers in process. Being among his most powerful servants, they were powerful enough to even outmatch the Ninja Tribunal. The fact that they can be controlled via. Heart of Tengu which also prevented them from using their powers at fullest as reflected by armor they wore while the Heart still intact indicated Ninja Tribunal used the artifact to defeat them during the conflict against their master.
