Taking place during the 21st and 22nd centuries, the world revolves around military conflicts and political tension between powerful supranational unions and their member states. Although the events are self-contained, standalone situations, these tie into a greater overarching storyline that encompasses the entire franchise, giving the series a level of storytelling depth and continuity comparable to a serial drama. Another major technology in this world is its use of giant mecha called "wanzers" (from the German word wanderpanzer) in battle that can be customized by the users in a variety of ways.
European Community
The European Community (EC) is a supernation that was formed after the European Union unified all of Europe, with more centralized control. While member-states still maintain their own military forces, foreign policy is set by the EC Assembly in Paris, France, which is also the supernation's headquarters. The EC also funds several research groups for various technologies such as Wanzer warfare.
Oceania Cooperative Union
The Oceania Cooperative Union, often shortened to OCU, is a supernation that consists of Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, a number of countries in Southeast Asia, and some Pacific islands. The headquarters of the supernation is in OCU Australia. The bloc, which was created in 2019 out of another ASEAN-type organization called the Bangkok Economic Alliance, also has partial control of Huffman Island, which it shares with the USN. This island in the Pacific Ocean holds much significance in terms of natural resources, which has led to two major wars with the USN.
Although regarded as an equal to the USN in many aspects, the OCU suffers from civil strife. Cambodia and Laos were the first to rebel with the creation of an independence alliance as depicted in Front Mission 5. The People's Republic of Alordesh (formerly known as Bangladesh) was the next member to revolt, which is expanded upon in Front Mission 2. The OCU has been struggling to maintain unity since the events of the coup in Alordesh, the rebellions in Cambodia, and numerous civil disputes in other member-nations such as OCU Philippines. The OCU nearly broke up during an attempted coup in Japan, but this was stopped when news broke that the Okinawa Ocean City was invaded by the DHZ military.
Organization of African Consolidation
In the early 21st century, racial divides and disputes between nations devolved into full-on civil wars across the African continent. In the aftermath of these conflicts, the EC, OCU and Republic of Zaftra dispatched troops to assist with peace mediation and reconstruction. During the reconstruction, the UNAS, with the backing of the EC, founded the "Organization of African Consolidation" with the goal of unifying Africa. Although the OAC did much to help rebuild the shattered continent, its progress stagnated when the political situation between the African supra-nations began deteriorating once again. In 2030, the OCU announced it would be joining the OAC and the "Africa Continental Cooperative National Plan" was enacted to make the idea of a unified Africa a reality this was challenged by significant degrees of civil unrest throughout the continent.
People's Republic of Da Han Zhong
In 2112, following Chairman Bai's death, Vice-Chairman Ming Huang Jiu was to be sworn in as the new leader, but his assistant, Jie Bo Lao, secretly ordered the Rapid Reaction Force to shoot down his plane during a routine flight; his only son, Kwang Ming, was the sole survivor of the assassination attempt. As soon as he became Chairman, Jie Bo Lao promoted the country's policies and changed its name as well. In a change from free market policies, all industries were nationalized to create a "National Corporation".
Chairman Jie would silence anyone that stood in his way. Thus the people suffered greatly under the brutal oppression of his government. This led to the rise of an internal resistance faction called the Hua Lian Rebels, which is armed and financed by the USN. Although under-equipped and outnumbered by the Changli Army, the Hua Lian Rebels seek to put an end to Jie Bo Lao's dictatorship at any cost.
However, the government still reigns supreme after the destruction of the Hua Lian and defeat of its renegade Lost Number forces.
Republic of Zaftra
The Republic of Zaftra (Zaftra is a distorted version of the word "Завтра" - "Tomorrow" in Russian) is a supranational union consisting of Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Zaftran capital, where the Zaftra Central Administration operates, is Moscow, Russia. The union's roots date back to the end of the USSR in 1991. The former Soviet republics struggled to survive on their own after it collapsed, facing economic hardships and civil conflicts. In an attempt to remedy their issues and make capitalism work, the splinter states reformed as the Republic of Zaftra in 2015.
The Republic of Zaftra used the Peace Mediation Organization (PMO) as a front to establish and maintain control over Huffman Island with the intent of exploiting its people and resources. The country would also come to public notice again, where the Zaftran government attempted to orchestrate a war between the EC and the USN by attacking German military bases and the EC Resource Base in Poland.
United States of the New Continent
The United States of the New Continent, often shortened to USN (known as the Unified Continental States or UCS in some English versions), is a supernation formed in 2020 in response to the formation of the Oceania Cooperative Union. The headquarters of the supernation is in USN North America. The USN is often at an uneasy standstill against the OCU with regards to the Pacific region and particularly on Huffman Island. There is a large disparity in quality of life throughout the USN, which has led to disaffection and open rebellion in several member-states. Most of the rebellions occur in South America, such as in USN Venezuela.
