The X-Men
The X-Men.

The X-Men are a team created by Professor Charles Xavier as a response to the emergence of naturally occurring super-humans known as mutants among the baseline human society. Seeking to promote his dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans, Xavier trained his X-Men in the use of their powers at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, training them to become defenders of a world that hates and fears them. Over the years, the heroes of mutantkind found their mission constantly endangered by both reactionary humans and fanatic mutants.
The result of a leap in natural evolution, mutants, or Homo superior, are born with superhuman abilities which generally manifest themselves at puberty. Seen as a threat, mutants are often hated and feared by other humans. Spending most of his early adult years studying mutation at Oxford University, Professor Charles Xavier, who himself was secretly a mutant telepath, had a dream of mutants and humans coexisting pacifically. During his period at Oxford, Xavier found in the brilliant geneticist Moira Kinross a trusted colleague with whom he shared his ideals and plans.
Over the years, Xavier realized that other mutants envisioned different futures for mutantkind than his own dream of co-existence. In Israel, he met a mutant named Magnus, whose views differed radically from Xavier's dream. Mangus believed that a war between mutants and humans for dominance of the Earth was inevitable, and that mutants must take their rightful place as the dominant species. In Egypt, following an encounter with an unscrupulous mutant telepath, known as the Shadow King, Xavier vowed to protect the world from the threat of evil mutants, endeavoring to foster peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans.
Ultimately, with Moira's support, Xavier decided to open a school for mutants, to secretly train them to protect a world that hates and fears them, dubbing them his X-Men. To accomplish his goal, Xavier transformed his father's estate into the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. In his "X-Mansion", he constructed the Danger Room to test and train mutants, and developed Cerebro, a powerful mutant detection machine.
After years of preparation, Xavier decided it was the time to recruit the young mutants he had been keeping track of, as anti-mutant hysteria hit its peak. With reports about a young mutant accidentally endangering and then saving a crowd of people with an optic blast, Xavier traveled to Washington D.C., seeking out FBI agent Fred Duncan, who was assigned to investigate reports of mutants. Xavier convinced Duncan to allow him to enroll young mutants in his school and prepare them to battle evil mutants.
In the following days, Xavier, as Professor X, recruited Scott Summers, the young mutant from the news story. Rescued from the clutches of evil mutant Jack Winters, Scott became the first of the X-Men, codenamed Cyclops. Later on, Cyclops and Professor X saved young Bobby Drake, a mutant commanding extreme cold and moisture, from an angry lynch mob. Drake joined the group as Iceman. Xavier's next recruit was the winged Warren Worthington III, who had already embarked on a solo super-hero career as the high-flying Angel. After a brief battle, Angel agreed to join the group. Their next recruit was the dexterous and intelligent Hank McCoy, whom the X-Men rescued from a would-be conqueror, the Conquistador. McCoy joined Xavier under the codename Beast.[131] Rounding out the group, Xavier had Jean Grey join them as Marvel Girl. Jean Grey had been mentored by Xavier since childhood, after her mental powers manifested.

The X-Mansion

When Emma Frost finally awoke from her coma, she and Banshee decided to convert her Massachusetts Academy into a new "School for Gifted Youngsters" and train Generation X. Professor X agreed to pass on the title while his ancestral home was renamed the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. While the Massachusetts Academy operated as a training facility for younger mutants, the Institute acted as the headquarters of the X-Men.[29]

During Operation: Zero Tolerance, Bastion forced Jubilee to reveal the Mansion's defenses, then stripped down the mansion, having nearly everything inside removed. After defeating Bastion, the X-Men moved back into the mansion and restocked it. After Scott learned that Cable was his infant son returned from the future an adult, Cyclops offered X-Force a headquarters at the mansion. After finding him hiding from the genocide of his own race superiors, Professor X gave Fiz, an alien Skrull, temporary asylum at the mansion.

Under the influence of Cassandra Nova, Professor Xavier publicly outed himself as a mutant. After this revelation, the Xavier Institute once again opened its doors to students, this time with a greatly increased enrollment.[30] To house the new students, an X-shaped dormitory was built behind the mansion.[31] Because Cerebro gained a nanotech body and was eventually destroyed, Professor X and Beast created Cerebra to serve as their new mutant tracking, telepathic computer. The school continued to face challenges from outside, such as protesters and the fanatic cult, the U-Men, but they also faced challenges from within, such as a possessed Professor X,[32] a student-led riot,[33] and Xorn forming a new Brotherhood of students and destroying the mansion.[34] Prior to its destruction, Professor X decided that at the end of the term he would step down as Headmaster and pass the reins onto Jean Grey. Unfortunately, Jean died in the confrontation with Xorn.

After the mansion was destroyed by Xorn posing as Magneto, Professor X left the school to attempt to rebuild Genosha. Cyclops and Emma Frost became co-headmasters and rebuilt the school with a new larger design, using funds from Angel. The student body of the Institute was divided into training squads and assigned an X-Man mentors. After manipulating a student into committing suicide, the sentient Danger Room obtained a body and departed the school.

Layout

Map of the old Mansion + Layout.

The Xavier Mansion has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times with varying features. Originally designed as a Neoclassical mansion, the current structure resembles a much more futuristic style. The original school was a three story Neoclassical mansion with additional subbasements added. The ground floor held housed the grand foyer, kitchen, formal dining room, parlor, library, sitting room and Professor X's office. The second floor was private chambers and a study lounge. The basement provided addition storage and a wine cellar. Atop the mansion was a large glass-paneled dome. Because Storm preferred that spacious attic room, it was adapted to her use renovated into a greenhouse.

Below the main structure was locate the subbasements, the true headquarters of the X-Men. Here was housed the training facilities and conference areas used by the X-Men while preparing for field missions. The subbasement was connected to the main structure via hyperlifts.

After the Professor X was publicly outed as mutant and the school was destroyed by Xorn posing as Magneto, the Xavier Institute was rebuilt as a much large facility under the direction of Co-Headmasters Cyclops and Emma Frost. The new school had more dormitories to house the larger student body, a cafeteria, and additional classrooms. The outlet for the hanger bay was moved from Devil's Rock to underneath a retractable basketball court. The new school still possessed more traditional features such as a Danger Room, Cerebra Chamber, medical facilities.

Cerebra Chamber
The mutant locating, telepathic-enhancing super-computer Cerebra was located in a secure chamber.[citation needed]

Danger Room
The Danger Room appears to be a featureless room, but in actuality operated as the ultimate battle simulator. It employed highly advanced technologies from sources such as the Shi'ar, Forge, and Beast. Students were not permitted to be in the Danger Room unless accompanied by an instructor or X-Man.

Holding Cells
The holding cells were an underground prison facility for those villains that the X-Men deemed too unsafe to let roam about freely. The holding cells consisted of small titanium-steel cells, with the same type of door. Various safety measures were be taken, such as erecting an internal force field to back up the titanium-steel walls, a nullification field to 'switch off' mutant abilities, and various others. There were also stasis tubes, which held inhabitants in a state of suspended animation until they were awakened.[citation needed]

Medical and Research Labs
The labs were usually used by Dr. Henry McCoy and other medically-trained mansion staff. RALPH, the holographic doctor was also installed in the lower-level Medical Lab, in the event that Dr. McCoy or another member of the medical team was unavailable. [citation needed]

War Room
The War Room was located near the Danger Room. It was the 'operating center' of the X-Men, where briefings were given, missions were planned, and meetings took place.

Z'nox Chamber
A mysterious secret, psi-proof chamber of which only Professor X and a select few knew.

Grounds
The grounds of the Xavier Estate remain largely unchanged. Located outside of Salem Center, the grounds have large open fields, surrounding woods, and a beach on Breakstone Lake. The school grounds are now sentient as they are currently inhabited by the grandchild of the original Krakoa that asked to join the X-Men after attacking them by the orders of the Hellfire Club.[56]

Breakstone Lake
Breakstone Lake is a natural, freshwater lake located just east of the main structure.

Boathouse
On the edge of Breakstone Lake, a boathouse was constructed. Although the mansion and underground bunker was significantly advanced, the boathouse was simple in design. Used as the newlywed home of Cyclops and Phoenix, the boathouse only contained communication technology, linking it to the mansion and bunker. It is unknown if this structure is still standing.

Cemetery
A small cemetery is located on grounds. Several former X-Men (including Jean Grey, Thunderbird, and Banshee) and former students (including Squid-Boy, Jeffrey Garrett, and Wallflower).

Courtyard
Located within the courtyard are the baseball court and memorial statue dedicated to the memory of Jean Grey. Previously a swimming pool and a Phoenix-shaped memorial statue were located in the courtyard.

Danger Cave
Located in the caverns beneath the ground, the Danger Cave was designed by Prodigy. Utilizing hard-light hologram technology similar to the Danger Room, the Danger Cave served as a place for the New X-Men to train for combat. Later when Pierce impersonated Cyclops to form the Young X-Men, they used the Danger Cave as headquarters. During this time it served as living quarters and training area.

Hangar Bay
The Hangar Bay is an underground area for the storage of the X-Men's aircraft such as the Blackbird, Stratojet and X-Copter. Devil's Rock was originally used as the exit and entry point for the X-Men's aircraft, but since the Mansion's reconstruction, it has been relocated beneath the basketball court. Upon departure and landing, a klaxon will sound warning for anyone nearby to vacate the area. Students are advised to move immediately, once the klaxon sounds.

Morlock Tunnels
The grounds have access to the Morlock Tunnels, which are a series of abandoned military tunnels and sewer lines connecting to various locales such as New York City and New Jersey.

X-Equipment

The X-Men have several pieces of unique equipment available to them.

X-Jets

The Blackbird is the X-Men's main source of conventional transportation. Professor Charles Xavier somehow gained at least one working version of the RS-150 Blackbird from S.H.I.E.L.D., after the X-Men's Stratojet had been destroyed by Count Nefaria.[1] Located in an aircraft hangar on the grounds of the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, the Blackbird served the Professor and X-Men for many years. At some time, the Professor upgraded to the SR-71 Blackbird. The Devil's Rock was the exit and entry point for the X-Men's aircraft.
he X-Men's original "X-Jet" was a private jet, purchased by Professor X for the X-Men’s use shortly before an early encounter with the alien Lucifer.[1] It would be used by the X-Men for a long time as their principal mode of long-distance transportation, although fueling it was occasionally a hassle.
Sometime prior to their first encounter with the "living island" Krakoa, however, the X-Men updated their equipment with the so-called Stratojet, a specialized aircraft which itself was a Blackbird prototype. The X-Men used it to reach Krakoa, using its Vertical Take-Off and Landing system to lower it to earth. As the Stratojet was watertight, it was found floating upon the ocean surface after Krakoa was defeated, ejected into outer space by Lorna Dane's magnetism, where the X-Men easily recovered it and flew off.
However, the Stratojet was soon after destroyed by Count Nefaria, firing upon it with surface-to-air missiles after he and the Ani-Men had taken over Valhalla Base.[3] A series of modified Blackbirds later replaced the Stratojet as the customary “X-Jet”.
The X-Jet "Dove" was created for Beast.

X-Uniforms

The basic costume designed by Charles Xavier, Professor X, for his first and original X-Men. The costume (X-Costume, X-Suit or X-Uniform) was projected for body protection and ideological identification with the public, making them seem like super-heroes. The suits have several features, to maximize the X-Men's potential and survival.

  • Kevlar Lining: Manufactured with exceptionally thin Kevlar lining, with alien technology, allowing them to survive more than one bullet.
  • Nomex Lining: The uniforms also have nomex reinforcement to resist fire.
  • First Aid Assistance: Circuitry inside the suits allows for monitoring of the X-Men's lifesigns, acting as a location tracker for the proper X-Equipment.
  • Environment Adaptability: The suit's fabrication allows for a degree of temperature control. In the best of circumstances, they can act as space suits, but this is not recommended.
  • Belt Pouch Gear: Those pouches on the X-Belts aren't just for show. They contain a variety of useful items to allow for mission completion, as well as rescuing mutants.
    • First Aid Kit: Standard loadout includes hemostatic and coagulation medicine, first aid spray, bandages, and general first aid equipment.
    • Analyzer: The X-Men have an environmental analyzer (think a Tricorder from Star Trek), allowing them to scan for oxygen levels, energy readings, radiation levels, and general 'scans' on a small area.
    • Tracking Device: The X-Men have both a set of tracing bugs they can put on or in a place, as well as a device to track them. More importantly, they can locate each other via their uniforms if they are undamaged enough.
    • Communicators: A spare, hand-held communicator, separate from their usual earpiece equipment. They also have an earpiece equipment.
    • Larceny Tools: Military-grade Lockpicks, hacking devices, power-rerouters, etc. This allows the X-Men to break into any location, or at least, not be caught unable to do something like get data from a computer, or break into a place without making noise.

Original Uniforms: The original five X-Men wore matching uniforms symbolizing their role as a team. As these uniforms predated the X-Men's relationship with the Fantastic Four, the earliest versions were likely not composed of unstable molecules. To congratulate the X-Men after their graduation, Professor Xavier allowed the team to begin wearing individualized costumes.
New Mutants Uniforms: When Professor Xavier established a new class of students, he gave them modified versions of the original X-Men's uniforms to wear. Danielle Moonstar violated Xavier's dress code immediately by adding pieces of her heritage to the costume, and stood up to Xavier when he tried to discourage her.
Dark Age Uniforms: A new style of X-Uniform was introduced while the X-Men were believed dead, and first worn by the staff at the Muir Island research center to repel the Reavers' invasion. Despite the light-weight design, these flexible suits acted like body armor to absorb impact and penetration wounds. When the X-Men officially reformed some months later, they adopted the light armor uniforms as a team.
Generation-X Uniforms: When the Massachusetts Academy became the new home to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, Generation X was established as the latest incarnation of X-Men students. Their group uniforms were red and yellow instead of the traditional blue and yellow. Individuality in the costumes was encouraged, in part because the student body had a number of unique physical mutations requiring special clothing needs.
Xavier Institute Uniforms: The X-Men returned to a unified costume design around the time the Xavier School went public as a center for mutant activity. They stress a relatively normal attire such as shirts and jackets instead of "spandex".
New X-Men Uniforms: Beast provided the New X-Men with new and bullet-proof uniforms, which received a warm welcome from their users.
