Cosmic Entities
The Endless
It seems, after having abandoned his duty as one of The Endless Destruction came to truly understand what The Endless are. He says that they are simply patterns, ideas, repeating motifs and makes it clear that for their functions to be performed, no actual intervention is required on their part. In fact he goes on to say The Endless have no right to interfere with the lives of mortals.
Also, he explains his own theory about what each of The Endless represent saying that he symbolizes creation, in this same way he goes on to say that Death is to life as Despair is to hope, Desire is to hatred and Destiny is to freedom. When Dream questions what he would be in this all, Destruction says, "Reality, perhaps?" This seems to shake the very foundation of what The Endless are, as most of the others see themselves as bound to their duties while Destruction makes it very clear that without them all will go on, perhaps more sporadically, but it will continue.
Neil Gaiman has also added in the foreword to The Sandman: Endless Nights, that The Endless are not to be seen as gods, for gods need to be believed in to exist, The Endless will continue existing whether we believe in them or not, for they are The Endless.
Another thing that should be brought up is that although the first eight of The Endless may have never been human and the original seven may have never been anything but The Endless, the ninth was originally Daniel Hall, a mortal babe who was made Dream when forces outside of his control made it necessary that he take on the role, for although you can abandon your duties, there must always be one to hold the mantle of each of the seven Endless.
One thing about The Endless that seems to support the idea they were once "mortal beings" of sorts is the fact that they have been known to reproduce and bear, at least partially, human offspring.
In Sandman: Overture, which narrated the battle of Morpheus which lead him to his imprisonment, the parents of the Endless were revealed as Time , the embodiment of all time itself, father of The Endless, and Night, the embodiment of the infinite darkness that existed before the dawn of the universe and mother of The Endless.

The Infinite - Abstract Entities
Cosmic beings or cosmic entities are beings that have some level of omnipotence, cosmic awareness, and/or universal significance, and are usually immortal. The term includes the abstract entities. Abstract entities are conceptual cosmic beings that do not have physical form. They manifest through "M-Bodies" provided from the Dimension of Manifestations. Abstracts are embodiments of concepts. Some of them were "born" when the universe was created, such as Eternity, Infinity, Death, Master Order, and Lord Chaos. Some are older, such as Oblivion and the Living Tribunal. Abstracts can be still born after the Big Bang, such as Eternity's children, Epoch, and the In-Betweener. The abstracts were decimated when the Multiverse was destroyed by the Beyonders and the incursions. A coalition of the principal abstracts, including the Living Tribunal, attempted to challenge the Beyonders but were completely overpowered and were wiped out.

Elders of the Universe
The Elders of the Universe's origins are lost in the early history of the universe. They are some of the oldest living beings in the universe. Each of the Elders is the last survivor of their respective species, most of which evolved right after the "Big Bang", the cataclysmic event in which the universe was created. Their respective species were the earliest creations of the Celestials. The Elders are virtually immortal and not only have they outlived their respective races, they have also all outlived their original galaxies. While they are not Abstract Entities, they have all attained some level of cosmic power. As the relatively few survivors of the earliest period of the universe, the Elders regard themselves figuratively as brothers. They do not often associate with each other aside from the Grandmaster's schemes.

Heralds of Galactus
Galactus, originally named Galan, is the oldest and one of the most powerful beings in the universe, having survived the death (big crunch) of his "first" universe and the birth (big bang) of this universe, but he is crippled by an insatiable hunger that drives him to consume the very life-energies of entire planets, destroying these worlds in the process. Eons ago, Galactus realized it was far more efficient to use advance scouts or “heralds” to seek out planets for him to consume. In the years that followed, Galactus created a succession of Heralds, each with very different backgrounds, motives, and personalities.

Star Conquerors
Star Conquerors are a species of large alien starfish-like creatures with mind-controlling abilities. Starro is an alien super-villain who intends to take over the universe. As one of the Star Conquerors, its physical appearance is that of a gigantic starfish, containing millions of similar drones that latch onto a host and control its mind. This ability to dominate an entire populace with ease makes him an incredibly dangerous threat, and one of the earliest and greatest enemies of the Justice League.

Knowhwere Denizens
At the beginning of the universe, the dark god Knull created a symbiotic sword and used it to decapitate a Celestial. Banished into the Void, Knull used the severed head as a temporary base and a forge to refine his weapon into what would ultimately be known as All-Black. The headless Celestial's decapitated body was trapped in the Realm Between, tethered to All-Black and by extension to Knull; absorbing the souls of those slain by the Necrosword until it manifested a world of the dead within itself.
As the head eroded and decayed over the millennia, a city was built inside and it became known as Knowhere; serving as a scientific station for various races seeking to study events at the edge of the universe. Served by a council made up of representatives of each race and, for a time, by Cosmo, the station's head of security, the station faced numerous alien invasions, most of which were fought off by Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy, with the Luminals serving as sometime-annoyance to the Guardians, but often doing what they could to protect the station. It served as a base of operations for the Annihilators.

War of Order & Chaos
Lords of Order
The Lords of Order are a group of magic beings possessing nearly unlimited power. They grant their agents the authority to act on their behalf, serving as a counterforce to the Lords of Chaos, as both are engaged in a constant struggle for universal supremacy and the direction of raw magic.

Lords of Chaos
The Lords of Chaos are higher magical beings of power representing chaos. Often acting through empowering their agents and followers of their Chaos Magic, their eternal opponents are the Lords of Order, their cosmic opposites, as they work to bring about a period where chaos reigns supreme, also known as the "kali yuga".
