Shirogane Takeru wakes up three years after the end of Unlimited to find himself back in his room. Although he first thinks that everything that had happened to him was a dream, he soon feels that something is wrong, and leaves the house to find that he has been sent back in time to the beginning of the events in Unlimited. Unwilling to accept something like Alternative V, he decides to help Professor Kouzuki to complete Alternative IV and save mankind.

History

This one is huge so it's under a collapse.

1867

  • Formation of the Motosuu Government (元枢府) in Japan. The daimyos of the anti-shogunate-overthrowing faction and the families positioned to accede to the shogunate merge, establishing the restoration of imperial rule. Afterwards, the Motosuu Government, organized by the Five Regent Houses, the major samurai families of Koubuin, Ikaruga, Saionji, Kujou, and Takatsukasa, is installed. The head of the Motosuu Government - the Seii Daishogun (政威大将軍, roughly "ruling great general") - is nominated by the emperor from amongst one of the family heads of the Five Regent Houses. The capital city is switched from Edo to Kyoto, and a centralization of power is pressed forward.

1939

  • September 1st - World War II begins. War breaks out between the Axis powers and the Allied nations.

1940s

1941

  • December 8th - War in the Pacific breaks out. From the commencement of hostilities, to the invasion of Malaya, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Philippines campaign, and the invasion of Hong Kong all take place.

1944

  • World War II ends. The end of the war between the Axis powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) and the Allies (the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Germany temporarily occupied most of Europe, but following the European counterattack, the United States dropped a pair of atomic bombs on German territory, securing victory for the Allies.
  • As the war ended earlier for the Empire of Japan as compared to real-life events, Operation Shō-Go 1 (the Battle of Leyte Gulf), Operation Ten-Go 1 (the Yamato's suicide mission at the Battle of Okinawa), and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings did not take place. As the Soviets did not invade, the Sakhalin Northern Territories of the Kuril Islands remain in Imperial possession. Western culture such as the celebration of Christmas did not seep into Imperial Japanese postwar culture as deeply as it did in real life.
  • The world becomes focused around the ideological conflict manifested by the war between the two major powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, and the Cold War begins between the East and West. A global framework consisting of the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Warsaw Pact nations is established.
  • The Empire of Japan, which the Allies had re-conciliated with, avoided unconditional surrender, but were placed under substantial US control, with several policies effectively turning the former Axis nation into a vassal state of the United States. The Empire of Japan is then incorporated into the world order of the Cold War immediately after the cessation of hostilities, and are promoted by the United States as their most important ally in the Far East during the post-war reconstruction. As part of the postwar restructuring in Japan, power is taken from the Shogunate and granted to the elected Diet and the cabinet.

1946

1950s

1950

(IW) The Daedalus Project, a Western bloc-administrated space technology development plan.
  • The ESA (European Space Agency) of the European nations and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) of the United States, in great secrecy, begin work on the Daedalus Project, a plan to develop and launch an extra-solar planetary probe. The project plan was later made available for participation by all Western bloc nations, and was made public in development stages named Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, which would successively develop and put to practical use large multistage rockets, orbital return vehicles, space stations, MMUs, and other related technologies.
  • Under the Daedalus Project, orbital satellites and manned flights to the Moon were promoted, the construction of large-scale orbital facilities and permanent lunar bases with an aim towards infrastructure development of the lunar surface, were promoted and achieved in stages. As part of efforts to construct a permanent lunar surface base, large-scale orbital facilities were constructed, and large space-going craft were developed and deployed to establish a supply line in-between the Earth and the Moon. All these were achieved in project stages.
  • With the US leading the western nations, the international moonbase, Plato-1, is completed, and the geological surveys and exploitation of raw materials on the Moon begins.
  • The final extrasolar planetary exploration stage would eventually be announced to have failed due to loss of communication with the Icarus I probe.
  • While the Soviet Union and her Warsaw Pact allies initially developed similar plans and held the lead in the development race, they eventually lost the Moon race. Afterwards, most of their technology shifted to heavily emphasize on unmanned probes and low orbit deployment technology.
  • The United States-Japan Security Treaty is signed. Under this treaty, the American occupation forces officially become the USFJ (United States Forces Japan), strengthening US influence in the Far East. The Empire of Japan, resigned to its situation, pushes forward in the recovery of its economy.

1955

  • In the US, approval is given for the development of a larger version of the MMU (Manned Mobile Unit) for greater efficiency, due to the delays in construction of the Icarus I unmanned deep space exploration craft. The enlarged MMU is essentially a powered exoskeleton.
  • Japan enters the Prometheus Project, a subsidiary under the umbrella of the Daedalus Project, and is mainly responsible for the allotment of Icarus I orbital construction duties, material development, and debris processing.

1956

  • The US space station Hope II is used to facilitate development of Super Carbon as a structural material for probes.

1957

  • The larger-scale MMUs developed as part of the Daedalus Project are put to practical use, and are able to use their manipulators to utilize a multi-purpose knife tool made of Super Carbon, presumably to facilitate large-scale material cutting during construction.

1958

  • The Viking 1 probe reaches Mars and deploys its landing module, which transmits data images of creatures assumed to be of Martian origin. Satellite date from Viking-1 in orbit aids in confirmation of the creatures inhabiting all across the surface of Mars. Communication with the landing module was lost shortly after. Subsequent probe projects by the United States and Soviet Union all failed, and information of the creatures remains rare for some time after the initial discovery. This would later be recorded as the first BETA encounter.

1959

  • Due to Viking-1's orbital trajectory, large structures were discovered across the Martian surface. The discovery sends waves across the scientific community. Because of the implication that the large structures suggested the possibility of intelligent Martian life, the special duty research organization, Dignified 12, comprised of 12 people ranging from mathematicians and linguists to other important personnel, was created for the purpose of establishing a method of cross-species communication.

1960s

1961

  • The large unmanned space probe "Icarus I", equipped with a nuclear pulse propulsion/ram scoop drive, is launched from Earth orbit. Besides collecting scientific data on deep space, its purpose is to find a planet suitable for human habitation. Communication with Icarus I would later be lost.
  • Control of Project Prometheus is transferred from the Empire of Japan's NASDA (National Space Development Agency) to its newly-established Imperial Japanese Aerospace Force.

1965

  • The Imperial Japanese Aerospace Force decides to adopt the multi-purpose knife tool made from Super Carbon as auxiliary equipment for their large MMUs. The tool would later be renamed as the Type-65 PB Knife, to be used as an auxiliary weapon around the time of the F-4 Phantom's introduction.

1966

  • Dignified 12 makes their transition to the Alternative Plans, becoming a global large-scale project. (At this point, the BETA have not yet been named as such, since they have not yet proven to be hostile adversaries to the human race).

1967

(IW) The beginning of hell on the Lunar surface: Warrior-class BETA assault facilities on the moon.
  • The Sacrobosco Incident. While surveying the interior of the Sacrobosco Crater, a geological exploration team from the international permanent lunar base Plato-1 encounters beings identical to the lifeforms discovered on Mars, making this the first time humanity has encountered an extraterrestrial species. Thereafter, contact with the team is lost, and they are never heard from again.
  • Immediately following the Sacrobosco Incident, the extraterrestrial species, in great numbers, attack numerous locations on the lunar surface. Due to that, these lifeforms are christened as the BETA: Beings of Extraterrestrial origin which is Adversary of human race, or 『人類に敵対的な地球外起源生命』 - "Extraterrestrially-Originating Life, Hostile to Mankind". The subsequent battles on the lunar surface, lasting until 1973, would later be called the First Lunar War, the first contact with extraterrestrials, and also the first war against extraterrestrials, in human history.
  • Upon examining the data from the Sacrobosco Incident and the results of subsequent combat, the United States Department of Defense questions the combat effectiveness of pre-existing conventional arms. Government-sponsored fundamental research into anti-BETA space weaponry by the military-industrial complex results in many development projects in all fields, from advanced materials to electronic engineering. The four United States Armed Forces branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Space Corps) begin the joint development project, the NCAF-X Project, as one of these developments.

1968

  • Once it was apparent that a state of war had emerged against the extra-terrestrials, the Alternative Plan shifts to the second stage, in order to directly study the full ecology of the BETA. Thereafter, the previous stage is referred to as Alternative I, and the current stage would thereafter be referred to as Alternative II.
  • The main objective of Alternative II was to find a means of communication with the BETA by studying their biology and interactions with the environment. However, completely alien forms of the BETA's organic structures and functions shocked the researchers; due to concerns for deviating from bio-ethical guidelines, Alternative II would eventually be shelved to make space for Alternative III.
  • While the results gained from the enormous financial expenditure and sacrifices made to capture and study BETA were mocked as "confirming the BETA to have been carbon-based life forms, and nothing more", the discovery of an enzyme affecting the metabolism decline was considered a significant contribution to humanity's cause.<ref name="Integral Works, pg. 19, 1968年 国連 オルタネイティヴ計画が第2段階へ移行"></ref> Nevertheless, the plan would later be widely considered a failure because of its abysmal main result.
  • As a solution to the stagnation of Alternative I in finding a method of communication with the BETA, the Soviets proposed a plan to probe the thoughts of the BETA directly with ESPers. As a precaution against setbacks in Alternative II, the plan was ratified, and the Soviet Academy of Sciences begins UN-sponsored research. Research on man-made ESPers speeds up.

1970s

1970

  • The first mechanized infantry units, making use of the Hardiman Feedback Protector, are deployed on the Moon to fight the BETA. The FP would later be further developed into exoskeleton equipment, and deployed amongst armies around the world as mechanized infantry equipment.

1971

  • Based on combat results in the First Lunar War, the Empire of Japan decides to begin basic research on the inclusion of the Feedback Protector as a possible domestically-produced effective anti-BETA weapon.

1972

  • The member nations of the European Community, which was previously formed along economic lines as a federation, further develop their regional organization framework into that of the European Union, which establishes a cooperative framework in-between the governments and armed forces of the European region, so as to improve their capability to wage war against the BETA. At the same time, NATO forces undergo reorganization.
  • The United States of America officially discloses the existence of the prototype Tactical Surface Fighter; upon the US government's disclosure, McDaell, its developer, begins marketing the prototype to allied nations.
  • Japan immediately decides to adopt the new F-4 Phantom, and Japanese-required performance specifications for the manufacturer are examined. Orders are also placed for a Melee Halberd type for the exclusive use of Japanese machines.

1973

1973: The BETA land at Kashgar.
  • April 19th: The BETA invasion of Earth begins. A BETA landing unit launched from the Moon lands on Earth, in the Kashgar Autonomous Area, western China. Construction of H01 (the Original Hive) begins in the Kashgar region of western China.
  • With the arrival of BETA on Earth, the United Nations Space Command treats the situation as an emergency, and declares the abandonment of the permanent lunar base Plato-1 and the complete withdrawal from all personnel from the Moon, bringing to an end 6 years of fighting on the lunar surface. With the Moon left under the complete control of the BETA, the famous phrase of "The Moon was hell", spoken by UN General Campbell during his command of the lunar surface forces, would be remembered in history as the defining words of the First Lunar War.
Infantryman engaging a Destroyer-class with an anti-armor weapon.
  • Operation Hongqi, the Kashgar campaign against the BETA by the armed forces of the People's Republic of China, begins. Aiming to monopolize alien technology, and with the military situation in their favor, China refuses to accept the deployment of UN military forces into their nation.
  • Approximately nineteen days after the initial fighting starts, the Laser-class BETA appear on the battlefield. They turn the battles into slaughters as the PLA are denied the important advantage of aerial power through use of highly accurate and long-ranged high-energy lasers, forming the most powerful and efficient air defense system ever encountered. Backed into a corner, and unable to resist the sheer number of BETA while deprived of air superiority, the Chinese appealed to the Soviets for reinforcements after repeated retreats; however, it was already too late. Both nations employ tactical nuclear devices in their scorched earth tactics in an attempt to halt the BETA advance, to almost no effect. The BETA begin their westward push.
  • Communist Party of the Soviet Union officially declares a state of emergency. All state functions (国家の全機能) are placed under military control, and the entire civilian population is mobilized. Under these measures, most non-Russians are called to military service, their sons also being raised as soldiers in military educational institutions.
  • The BETA invasion of Earth is used as an excuse to discontinue Alternative II, which had failed to produce decisive results. The United Nations brings a reserve plan, prepared by the Soviet leadership, into the forefront of matters as Alternative III. The plan involves the usage of man-made Espers; mass-production is made possible by implementing gene manipulation into the process; however, most of the Espers would later be sacrificed in Hive raids for the purposes of the plan.

1974

1974: The BETA advance sweeps through the Middle-East.
  • The UN Statistics Division announces that the world population had fallen by approximately 30% as a result of the BETA invasion of Earth.
  • July 6th: A second BETA landing unit impacts at Athabasca, Saskatchewan, Canada. Making use of the lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Eurasia, the Athabasca landing unit is destroyed by the US military through concentrated use of strategic nuclear weapons. This has the side-effect of turning half of Canada into an irradiated, uninhabitable wasteland. This is later referred to as the Athabasca Incident.
An F-4 Phantom armed with two WS-16A Assault Cannons.
  • The US-designed-and-manufactured F-4 Phantom, the first Tactical Surface Fighter and genuine anti-BETA weapon, enters service. The CIWS-1 Close Combat Knife (which would later be re-designated as the CIWS-1A) and the WS-16A (105mm smoothbore, 20mm chaingun) Assault Cannon all enter service alongside it. American forces, however, rely on the WS-16A as a primary weapon, with a pair of CIWS-1A as secondary weapons; the CIWS-2A, developed at the same time, and which would later be better known as the Japanese Type-74 PB Blade, is not included in any standard load-out for US military personnel.
  • In response to the Athabasca Incident, US Congress passes a bill to prioritize improving the anti-BETA defenses of North America. Because the supply quota of the European front was left unchanged, the priority of the Japanese supply order is lowered instead. This results in the Type-74 PB Blade ordered by the Empire of Japan being delivered to them for licensed production, but their F-4 TSFs are not, leaving many Japanese military personnel fuming at the situation.
  • The Strategic Defense Initiative is announced. Alarmed by the BETA landings in Kashgar and Canada, the USA declares their intention to enhance the orbital defense system to intercept BETA landing units in outer space. From the fact that man-made satellites, orbiting space stations, and spacecraft are not targeted by Laser-class BETA, the establishment of an orbital satellite surveillance line, and the integration of the formerly standalone strategies of space interception, orbital interception, high-altitude interception, and ground interception, into a practical, reliable defence network, is proposed. The following year, the United Nations would adopt the concept as the international defense program SHADOW, and elevate its status to a global project.
  • October: Reconnaissance by satellite reveals a ground structure similar to the one in Kashgar, in the old Iranian territory of Masshad. After further investigation confirms the presence of Gates and a Stab, it is named H02, the Mashhad Hive, confirming beyond doubt that Hives undergo branching and differenciation. Accordingly, the Kashgar Hive is designated H01.
  • The USA, after analysis showed the difficulty of implementing the SDI concept alone, due to the massive number of orbital weapons required, has the UN successfully adopt the it as an international defence plan. The UN Aerospace Force and the other nations involved begin an overhaul of their low-orbit space fleet in accordance to the plan.
  • The United States of America, which valued highly the results and fundamental technology research in the Prometheus Project provided by the Empire of Japan, requests for Japanese participation in the Strategic Defense Initiative. Although the Imperial Diet perceives the US' true intention to be one of economic cooperation, they declare Japan's decision to participate in the SDI, as they perceive US military power to be integral for Japan to be able to resist a BETA incursion.

1975

1975: The BETA begin their advance on the Eurasian continent.
  • A BETA group moving north along the coast of the Black Sea invades the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Construction of H03, the Uralsk Hive, begins in Kazakhstan.
  • In the face of mounting pressure by the BETA invasion, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union government relocates the state capital, from Moscow to Khabarovsk in the far east, near the border with China. Evacuation of major domestic industries and the defense industry begins.
  • The HI-MAERF (HIgh-Mobility AERial Fortress) Project begins in great secrecy, with the project goal being the development of an aerial fortress capable of independent invasion of enemy territory and Hive destruction. Development of the XG-70, in which the G-Element Gray 11 is to be used in, and the dedicated escort TSF XF-108 Rapier, commences as a three-way joint project between Lockweed, North Americana, and McDaell Doglam.
  • In response to the two BETA landing units that have reached Earth thus far, the UN Security Council decides to build a system to intercept them outside the Earth's atmosphere. Construction of Spaceward Hardwares for All-Round Defensive Ordnances and Warheads, SHADOW, begins, comprising three components: a lunar orbit surveillance network, an early stage nuclear launch platform at Lagrange 1, and a final interception line made up of a group of nuclear attack satellites in Earth orbit.
  • Japan dissolves its Air Force and reorganizes it into the Army, Navy, and Space Force branches of the military.
  • The Soviet Union further modifies its license-produced F-4Rs by adding in cold-weather countermeasures, and making the unit more lightweight for better close-combat performance. The result, the MiG-21 Balalaika, is deployed into live combat.
  • The armed forces of the People's Republic of China, using the MiG-21s supplied to them by the Soviets, proceed to further modify it into the J-8 and deploy it into live combat.

1976

1976: The Eurasian continent is split by the invasion.
  • Having achieved dominance over Eastern Europe, the BETA group moving west from Kashgar proceed further north into Soviet territory. Construction of H04 (Velsk Hive), in Arkhangelsk Oblast of the Russian SFSR, and H05 (Minsk Hive), in the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, begin.
  • To combat the worldwide shortage of TSFs, the USA encourages allied nations to develop their own TSF types, and begins accepting TSF engineering training teams from many nations. Disappointed at the de-prioritization of their order of F-4 Phantoms, the Imperial Ministry of Defense, which strongly advises independent domestic development, answers with the Akebono Program, by sending a combined team of 219 personnel from both private and military enterprises to the USA for the purposes of TSF development and application of related technologies.
  • As part of attempts to resolve the shortage of TSFs, the USA converts the easily mass-produced T-38 training unit into the F-5 Freedom Fighter. Europe is prioritized for the unit's export supply; Asia receives less than 30% of the total F-5 production.
  • The USA first deploys the F-11 Tiger. The manufacturer, Grunnan, begins marketing it to Asian nations, that are still awaiting delivery of their supply of F-4 Phantoms, such as the Empire of Japan. A model with increased output would also be marketed towards the Japanese Royal Guard. The F-11's high-stability frame was offset by its low output, however, and it was quickly replaced in service by the F-4.
  • Marketing of the F-5 Freedom Fighter and the F-11 Tiger to Japan intensifies. McDaell, fearing the cancellation of Japanese orders for the F-4 Phantom, delivers 12 units and their necessary peripheral equipment and parts as a countermeasure against that possibility, allowing the Japanese to begin live testing of the Gekishin.
  • The French Army begins deployment of the F-5F manufactured by Dass-Ault, named the Mirage III according to traditions.
  • Sweden, with F-5Fs supplied by France, further modifies them into the F-5S, also known as the J-35 Draken, and deploys them. The J-35 is considered of the same lineage as the F-5E, F-5F, F-5G, and F-5I, as European modifications of the F-5 Freedom Fighter; these 5 TSFs are referred to as the "Five Sisters" by military personnel.
  • Israel's TSF manufacturer, IEI, , further modifies F-5Fs supplied by France with desert battle specifications. These TSFs are then deployed as the F-5F Kfir.

1977

1977: BETA continue to spread both north-east and north-west.
  • A BETA group from Kashgar reaches the southern part of the Urals and invades Soviet territory. Construction of H06 (Ekibastuz Hive) begins to the north of Lake Balkhash in Kazakhstan.
  • Worldwide, nations attracted the Alternative Plans begin to move. As Alternative III had yet to show results, nations disfavoring other countries' anti-BETA strategic initiatives begin large-scale budget allocation in the field of fundamental researches in anticipating the next Alternative Plan. With aggressive research into BETA-derived technology, the USA becomes dominant in the fight to lead the Alternative Plan.
  • Beginning of Alternative III's anti-BETA diversionary effectiveness experiments. Examination of anti-BETA diversionary experiments validated by Alternative III begins in earnest across all fronts in Eurasia. The result is an estimated BETA tactical information propagation model. (The idea that each Hive has its own independent strategic planning functions and supporting chain of command, and that information gathered by the BETA is disseminated throughout the entire population of the Hive in nineteen days, at which point it immediately propagates to all Hives derived from the same Original Hive as the source Hive, and after which all Hives that received the information will have countermeasures based on the information gathered).
  • The tactical information propagation model is incorporated into anti-BETA strategic planning. Prior to its integration into strategic concerns, human forces were defeated in 8 out of 10 engagements during the experiments.
  • Initial deployment of Grunnan's A-6 Intruder, the world's first Tactical Surface Attacker (TSA), by the USA. The amphibious A-6 was designed in the shoreline assault role in conjunction with its carrier craft, the Swordfish-class medium-size carrier submarine, which also begins deployment at the same time.

1978

1978: Operation Palaiologos fails to stall the BETA advance.
  • The Moonlit Night Incident occurs. An attempted coup d'etat in the DDR by dissidents led by high-ranking NVA officers.
  • Operation Palaiologos is launched in Europe. A joint operation by a combined NATO/Warsaw Pact force attempts to seize H05, the Minsk Hive. After two months of fierce fighting, with the combined forces of all of Europe acting as a diversion, the Volk Regiment of the Soviet Army 43rd Tactical Armored Division successfully enters the Minsk Hive, but is wiped out after a few hours. Though the operation to seize H05 is unsuccessful, humanity obtains valuable information from their observations of the Hive interior from the data left behind by the Volk Regiment. This data would hereafter be known as the Volk Data.
  • The Soviet Union is divided east and west by a massive BETA counterattack, as if in retaliation for Operation Palaiologos. Exhausted from the previous fighting, the European Front collapses entirely. The Warsaw Pact nations are cut off from the USSR and fall back to Western Europe with the NATO forces. BETA gain total control of northwest Eurasia.
  • Construction of H07 (Surgut Hive) begins in Russia.
  • In order to resist the BETA invasion, the Middle Eastern nations declare a holy war. The First Jihad Union Force, transcending previous sectarian divides, deploys in a simultaneous attack on multiple fronts, successfully push back the front line temporarily.
  • In response to the ongoing BETA invasion, the Soviet Union moves the headquarters of Alternative III from Novosibirsk to Khabarovsk.
  • First deployment of the A-10 Thunderbolt II by the USA, developed by Fairchild Republic as a heavy TSF specializing in point defense and fire support. In particular, it gains a reputation on the European front for high performance at killing Tank-class BETA, thus gaining the nickname "Tank Buster".

1979

  • Joint experiment between Dr. Karls Moorcock and Dr. Ristomatti Lechte is a success. Gravity manipulation engine mechanism is established. The Moorcock-Lechte Drive is developed at Ros Alamos.
  • The concept that would later become the G-Bomb is first invented during the development process of manufacturing the Moorcock-Lechte Drive. The possibility of a decisive strike on the BETA would heavily influence US strategic actions to come, and with the completion of the Moorcock-Lechte Drive, the US makes further requests to Boening and Rokswell to continue testing and development.
  • The USA puts the Santa Fe Project into motion. From HI-MAERF Project participants, the "Memorandum Concerning ML Theory-Based Strategic Weapons" is submitted to President Harry O'Laughlin in utmost secrecy. The same year, a different plan to apply the ML Engine in a simpler super-critical reaction weapon commences - the beginning of the Fifth Dimensional Field Effect Bomb (also known informally as the G-Bomb) development program.
  • Due to the war situation in Eurasia and other world events related to the BETA invasion, Japan drastically revises its Fundamental Law of Education. In the interests of cultivating superior BETA-fighting pilots (Eishi), a special educational environment for the gifted and an aptitude-based selection system are set up.
  • Japan ends the Akebono Program. Acquisition of fundamental technology related to the development and operation of 1st generation Tactical Surface Fighters is complete.
  • The issue of a shortage of TSFs on the front-lines begin to end, as the technical acquisitions of the other nations progress on to domestic production. The United States Congress passes a bill restricting foreign transfer of next-generation TSF production technology.
  • The Vancouver Pact under the United Nations enters into force. Believing the rapid expansion of BETA territory to be a result of lack of unity in the war, under a UN Security Council Resolution the war against the BETA including Hive capture operations would be conducted under UN leadership. It also stipulates matters such as participating countries' right of belligerency against BETA to be limited to self-defence as well as collective defence and granting UN management/control over captured/seized articles.
  • Poland falls to the BETA assault.

1980s

1980

1980: The Oder-Neisse Defence Line successfully stalls the BETA advance.
  • Once the European Union Force is established the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and other European NATO nations, agree to the ECTSF (European Combat Tactical Surface Fighter) Program, a joint development plan for a next-generation TSF. With the goal of practical implementation in 1985, collaborative development between the nations begins.
  • In light of the current situation in Europe and Asia, the United Nations begins mediating negotiations with nations located away from the front lines, to have them accept national governments and refugees from frontline regions.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the MiG-23 Cheburashka, the nation's first true domestically-designed TSF. Developed separately from the MiG-21, its capabilities are equal to that of a quasi-2nd generation TSF; however, its poor serviceability and operational rates did not improve, prompting the Soviet government to begin work on an improved model. Units that were already deployed were given hasty repairs and modifications, and offered to Asian and African nations at a low price as a means for the Soviet government to preserve its influence with them.
  • The USA begins the LWTSF (Lightweight Tactical Surface Fighter) Program. As part of research into Tactical Surface Fighters for close combat, technological demonstration of smaller and lightweight craft with high mobility, begins. Under this plan, the YF-16 and YF-17 were developed by General Dynomics and Northrock, respectively. Though there are initially no plans to make it an official project, the appearance of the High-Low Mix concept in the future would elevate the technology demonstration into a development program for combat-capable units.
  • Taking into account the attrition rate on the European and Asian fronts, the Imperial Diet of Japan decides to reorganize and reinforce its military forces. Japan reintroduces its Military Service Law, previously abolished at the end of WWII. Conscription of a portion of the male populace, above 20 and under 40 years of age, is re-introduced as a result.

1981

1981: BETA invasion of the Nordic region beings in full force.
  • BETA invade the Nordic region. Weakened by the major BETA offensive of 1978, the Sino-Soviet and European Union allied forces retreat to the last bastion in Northern Europe, the Scandinavian Peninsula. The Scandinavian front would continue to intensify and last for over a decade.
  • The BETA group that invaded the Scandinavian Peninsula begins construction of H08 (Rovaniemi Hive), in Finland.
  • Operation Dunkirk begins in Europe. With the BETA advance into Western Europe, the European nations evacuate their civilians and civilization to Africa, South America, and South-east Asia. This would continue until 1984.
  • Japan first deploys the A-6J Wadatsumi and its tender submarine, the Type-81. They are deployed to military bases mainly in western Japan and around the shorelines of the Sea of Japan.
  • L1 early nuclear attack platform Space One is completed, and SHADOW begins partial operation.
  • France first deploys the Mirage 2000. The TSF is a 1.5th-generation unit produced by Dass-Ault via independent modification of the Mirage III, with a 15% increase in frame size to accommodate features for increased armament loads and operational time. Subsequent modifications would upgrade the unit to a 2nd-generation TSF.
  • The United States of America begins the ATDP Program (note: possibly Advanced Technology Demonstration Program?) by DARPA, the US Army, and NASA, to explore and establish leading experimental technologies for the third generation of Tactical Surface Fighters. The X-29 experimental TSF, produced by Grunnan, re-uses components from other TSFs in order to save on development costs and accelerate the program schedule to begin early testing.

1982

  • The United States Congress approves a 50-year lease of Alaska to the Soviet Union, and transfer of local residents begins even as preparations for relocation commence in various parts of the Soviet Union. At the same time, as a measure of military insurance, Yukon Base and the surrounding area spanning the US-Soviet border is leased to the United Nations free of charge for the next 50 years.
  • In light of the setbacks encountered during the purely domestic development of the Type-82, an integrated public and private sector development of a domestic next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter begins in Japan, in order to close the technology gap with the United States.
  • The USA begins deployment of the carrier-capable F-14 Tomcat developed by Grunnan, a long-ranged strike unit capable of utilizing the Phoenix missile; nevertheless, the TSF has more than enough capability for close-range melee combat. Deployment of true 2nd generation Tactical Surface Fighters begins.
  • The United Kingdom first deploys the F-5E ADV Tornado, an enhanced area defence version of the F-5, designed to perform on par with early 2nd generation TSFs.

1983

NVA MiG-21.
  • Operation Neptune takes place in Europe. A large 4-way joint counteroffensive operation by UN forces, the United States Armed Forces, European Union forces, and Warsaw Pact forces is enacted to lure out and destroy the BETA in Poland and improve the military situation in Europe. Total military strength invested is 300 warships, 500 TSFs, 400 helicopters, and over 300,000 troops (in comparison, Operation Palaiologos involved over 1,000,000 troops and over 20,000 fighting vehicles stretching across the horizon).
  • June - July: The events of Schwarzesmarken's epilogue occur.
  • July - August: The Oder-Neisse line falls and Eastern Germany is annihilated by the BETA.
  • September: Events of TSFiA 39 "Bake The Enemies" transpire. The BETA begin their offense on Western Germany, threatening the town of Hamburg. A joint American-West German task force barely holds them back long enough for the civilians to evacuate.
  • With the westward BETA advance from Kashgar, Western Europe becomes the main battlefield. Despite European military defenses making full use of the rivers to delay the BETA advance, the struggle is in vain. Berlin falls.
  • The United States begins the ATSF (Advanced Tactical Surface Fighter) Program, in order to develop a next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter in preparation for the world after the end of the BETA War.
  • Despite US assistance and the efforts of the European Union Force, western Europe is now a battlefield. The European Union head institutions are moved from Brussels to London as a temporary measure until headquarters in Belfast are complete.
  • Shocked by the USA's ATSF Program, the Japanese domestic next-generation Tactical Surface Fighter research and development group established earlier shifts plans to aim to develop a third generation TSF. The development project is restarted as the Youkou Program.

1984

  • Construction of H09, the Anbar Hive, begins in Iraq. As a result, there is a forced large-scale withdrawal from the Middle Eastern front, along with a serious shortage of oil resources.
  • Construction of H10, the Noginsk Hive, begins in Russia.
1984: The fall of the Oder-Neisse Defence Line allows the BETA access Western Europe, and at the same time India is invaded.
  • The BETA begin an all-out southward push. A large BETA group from Kashgar circumvents the Himalayas to invade the Indian subcontinent. The armies of the Indian subcontinent nations that had been invaded from the direction of the Middle East hold out against the BETA for over ten years while maintaining close cooperation with South-East Asian nations shielded by the Himalayas. However, the resource advantages of the BETA would eventually overwhelm the defenders, resulting in the military forces of the Indian subcontinent retreating and relocating their joint HQ to Sri Lanka to continue their defensive battles from there.
  • Scrutinizing the experimental data from successive Alternative Plans, Professor Kiriyama of the Imperial University hypothesizes that: "Based on the fact that the BETA show stronger reactions to computers than humans, communication by carbon-based lifeforms is impossible". A thesis concerning non-carbon-based pseudo-life forms is put together.
  • The Imperial government's growing trepidation with the worsening situation in Europe prompts them to decide on using Professor Kiriyama's thesis as a lure for the next Alternative Plan, in order to have the United Nations station military troops within Japan as defensive battle strength. National expenditures begin for fundamental research into non-carbon based pseudo-lifeforms.
  • The United States first deploys the McDaell Doglam F-15C Eagle. Developed as a successor to the F-4 Phantom, it is adopted all over the world as an all-purpose 2nd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, boasting of both range and high anti-BETA combat performance.
  • Operation of SHADOW begins. The ARTMISS final defence line, comprised of the nuclear strike satellites around Earth's orbit, is complete. Its purpose is to deal with situations whereby the Lagrange 1 early stage nuclear launch platform "Space One" is unable to change the trajectory of its target.

1985

1985: The BETA advance across Europe is now progressing unchecked.
  • Construction of H11 (Budapest Hive) begins in Hungary. As a result, the BETA invasion on the European front gains momentum.
  • The Empire of Japan forms an economic agreement with the Oceanian nations. The Imperial government, judging it inevitable that western Japan will eventually become a battlefield, decides to establish new overseas production bases for major domestic industries, various heavy industries, manufacturing industries, and so on. Industrial plants are constructed one after another in Oceanian nations such as Australia and New Zealand.
  • The Soviet Union's relocation of state functions to Alaska, which had began in 1982, is completed. The headquarters of Alternative III is moved from Khabarovsk to Talkeetna, Alaska. The evacuation and relocation was first completed for government facilities and military installations, followed by key industries, various manufacturing infrastructures, and then the majority of ethnic Russians. The Bering Sea is interposed as an absolute defense line in-between Soviet Alaska and the Russian Far East, and Soviet forces continue their battles against the BETA in an attempt to regain lost territory.
  • Japanese and British defence industry contractors initiate frequent contact with each other using under-the-table channels.
  • France strongly insists on the use of French-manufactured engines for the ECTSF.

1986

1986: BETA subjugation of the European continent is almost complete.
  • Construction of H12 (Lyons Hive) begins in France. Following the invasion of the British mainland, the BETA begin their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula.
  • In conflict with Britain and West Germany over decisions in the progress of the ECTSF Program, France withdraws from the project.
  • The United States first deploys the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The 2nd-generation TSF was developed by General Dynomics after the technical research-purpose LWTSF Program was elevated to actual combat machine development status, as part of the "High-Low Mix" concept was conceived as a countermeasure to the rising cost of F-14 and F-15 procurement. The F-16 is adopted by many nations as a lightweight TSF to succeed the F-5E.
  • The People's Republic of China and Taiwan sign a pact to form a common front against the BETA, forming the Unified Front of China.
  • In light of the front line drawing closer to the mainland of Japan, the Imperial Forces GHQ establishes a dedicated full-time domestically-deployed fighting force directly under their command, the Mainland Defence Force. The Imperial Forces is re-structured, with the strategic objective being to defend the Japanese homeland to the death.
  • August 18: To select its next mainline Tactical Surface Fighter, Japan carries out joint exercises with the United States. Dissimilar Air Combat Training is conducted at the Yausubetsu Training Area. During this exercise, Captain Iwaya Eiji of the Imperial Royal Guard accomplishes the brilliant feat of bringing down an F-15C Eagle in an F-4J Kai Zuikaku.
  • Disappointed by the substantial delays in the ECTSF program, West Germany suggests its withdrawal from the program. In reply to the hard selling of the F-15 and F-16 by the USA, West Germany begins to consider bringing in the F-15.
  • The 2nd-generation JA-37 Viggen, developed by SAAG using the J-35 Draken as a base, enters deployment with Sweden.

1987

1987: The BETA advance continues on all fronts.
  • Unable to resist the full-scale westward BETA advance, the governments of various nations holding out in Portuguese territory, in order to support refugees escaping from the European continent, relocate their capital functions to the United Kingdom, Greenland, and Canada. Military forces belonging to nations that have lost their territories are henceforth incorporated under UN command.
  • With the decline in national power of the permanent member nations of China, the Soviet Union, and France of the UN Security Council, Japan, which held great influence in technology, economic, and military matters, and Australia, with its immense national influence due to its provision of a stable food supply, are inducted as new additions to the list of permanent members of the UN Security Council, bringing the total number of permanent Security Council members to - in addition to the United States of America and the United Kingdom - seven nations. However, the right of vote for Japan and Australia is frozen for the next 20 years (until 2007).
  • July: The controlled Fifth Dimensional Effect Bomb experimental detonation, the Morpheus Experiment, which was carried out in the White Sands Desert, New Mexico, United States, is successful. This paves the way for practical implementation of G-bombs.
  • November: The HI-MAERF Project is discontinued due to technological issues, and the prospect of the implementation of the cheaper and more practical G-bombs, for which the limited quantities of BETA-produced elements would be put to better use in.
  • In light of the worsening war situation on the Indian subcontinent, Japan begins considering dispatching troops that had previously been requested by the United Nations. Dredging of Lake Biwa Canal begins for the re-servicing of the Lake Biwa canal. The canal is expanded to connect Osaka Bay, Ise Bay, and Tsuruga Bay together via Lake Biwa, as an important traffic route, and to allow passage of the Imperial Navy's Kii-class battleships and 300,000-ton class tankers. Despite incomplete work on the section of canal that connected Tsuruga Bay to the network, the Lake Biwa canal still allowed for the deployment of the USS Theodore Roosevelt TSF carrier during the BETA Invasion of Japan in 1998, and contributed to troop movements during Operation 21st in 2001.
  • Due to France's withdrawal from the ECTSF Program and the loss of the European mainland, the United Kingdom, which had become the only nation left providing substantial development to the development program, announces the shift in the ECTSF's specifications to that of a 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, with emphasis on close-combat and maneuvering capabilities.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the Hive capture-specialized MiG-25 Spirt-Voz, the heavy TSF taking its place as a front-line unit alongside the MiG-27 Aligatori.

1988

  • Japan completely revises its Fundamental Law of Education to focus on the cultivation of Eishi, completing the changes to the system that were first carried out in 1979. Truncation of compulsory subjects and reorganization of university departments begins.
  • The USA, disappointed in the stagnation of Alternative III, presents their proposal for the next Alternative Plan to the United Nations without waiting for the UN's call for contingency plans for the next Alternative plan. The USA presents an anti-BETA strategy that entails the use of the then-under-research G-Bombs to eradicate Hives; by using limited application of G-bombs to capture the outer Hives, repeating the cycle of acquiring G-elements to mass-produce G-bombs, and finally, using a saturation attack with a large number of G-bombs to purge the Hives in the center of Eurasia, including the Original Hive. The UN, seeing the lack of progress on Alternative III, agrees to consider the USA's proposal.
  • The UN carries out the Triad exercises. UN Joint Space Force and United States Strategic Orbital forces jointly conduct material drop experiments to verify the interception standard of the BETA BETA#Laser-class. Regardless of the contents of the load, only BETA#Heavy Laser-class in the vicinity of the predicted end point intercept the load, and it is found that they do not react beyond a certain fixed range. While the detailed principle behind this behavior remains unknown, this results in a significant boost in regular deployment of low Earth orbit satellites and HSSTs.
  • 14-year-old Kouzuki Yuuko begins examining quantum causality theory.
  • The UN rejects the United States' anti-BETA strategic proposal. Objections by Eurasian nations over the unpredictable effects of the new weapons with regards to the differences in the evaluation of the results of Alternative III is the main reasons for rejection. As a result, the USA is deeply disappointed in the UN, and decides to enforce their own anti-BETA strategy. From then on, the US' open lobbying towards member nations of the UN, and the radicalization of the rejected plan into what would eventually lead to Alternative V, begins.

1989

1989: The BETA begin their advance into East Eurasia and Asia.
  • In response to an object suspected to be a BETA landing unit flying in from the Moon's surface, SHADOW successfully executes its first interception, deflecting the object's Earthbound trajectory. However, there is controversy over whether the object was actually a BETA landing unit or not.
  • The BETA attempt to expand into Africa, even as other large-scale BETA groups invade Europe and the Indian subcontinent. They are met by the forces of the Middle Eastern Union at the Suez Canal Defence Line in a defensive battle, intensifying the fighting on the Arabian Peninsula.
  • The Imperial Ministry of Defense begins trial introduction and licensed production of the TSF-Type89/F-15J Kagerou in Japan, the TSF being jointly manufactured by Mitsuhishi Heavy Industries, Fugaku Heavy Industries, and Kawazaki. 12 units were originally introduced for the purpose of obtaining technology for the troubled development project of their domestic TSF, but another 188 F-15Js would later be produced.
  • June 15: The roughly four month long battle to defend the Suez front begins in North Africa.

1990s

1990

1990: The BETA continue their main advance into Asia and East Eurasia.
  • Construction of H13, the Bhopal Hive, begins in India. Following the evacuation of Europe, humanity focuses towards India to prepare for the capture of the Kashgar Hive, and begins a do-or-die resistance in the area.
  • A large BETA group from Kashgar begin an all-out eastward push. Northeast Eurasia, East Asia and Southeast Asia become the main battlefields as the Unified Front of China, Soviet Union, and various Southeast Asian nations wage a furious defensive war, but the frontline is gradually pushed back by the overwhelming numbers of the BETA.
  • The ATSF Program ends. As the result of the four-year development competition between Lockweed's YF-22 and Northrock's YF-23, the USA, which determined the YF-22 to be superior in terms of cost and conformation to existing US tactical doctrine, is selected as the next mainline TSF. After a year of trial operations, it is decided for formal deployment, and given the official designation of F-22A.

1991

  • Judging the eastward BETA advance to be a national crisis for the Empire of Japan, the Imperial Diet decides to dispatch troops to the East Asian frontline. The Imperial Army forms the Continental Expeditionary Force, and sends a large force of armored units with a focus on TSFs to the front. Despite their efforts, however, the frontline continues to be pushed back.
  • With the prior successful detonation of a G-Bomb during the Morpheus Experiment in 1987, work on making the weapon viable for practical usability begins. The US decides to use all of their G-Elements on the production of G-bombs. As a result, there is skepticism over the viability of the F-22A Raptor.
  • A paper by a 17-year old student on her own original theory "Quantum Causality Theory" catches the eye of the Alternative Plan bid committee. To hasten fundamental research on the next plan, she is admitted to the Imperial University's Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory; from then on, together with Professor Kiriyama, they pursue research on the theory testing of what would later become the 00 Unit.
  • With procurement of the F-22A Raptor running into difficulties, the USA begins the DRTSF (Dual-Role Tactical Surface Fighter) Program to modernize and improve existing TSFs to make up for gaps and shortages until the next mainline fighter is deployed. The McDaell Doglam-proposed F-15E and the General Dynomics-proposed F-16XL are both submitted for the plan. With superior armament payload, adaptability to future upgrades, and procurement costs, the F-15E is officially adopted.

1992

  • Construction of H14, the Dunhuang Hive, begins in China. At around the same time, construction of H15, the Krasnoyarsk Hive, begins in Russia. The sudden eastwards advance of the BETA elevates the sense of impending crisis in the Far East.
  • Operation Swaraj: A counteroffensive operation in the Indian subcontinent, Operation Swaraj, is set in motion to capture the Bhopal Hive and restore control of the Indian subcontinent to humanity. Under United Nations leadership, the African Union and Southeast Asian nations launch a massive assault. Space forces participate in orbital bombardment and orbital troop deployment; these are thereafter established as a tactical strategy of Hive capture operations.
  • Operation Swaraj: During the operation, Special Reconnaissance Force A-01, under the direct command of Alternative III, enters live combat to infiltrates the Hive Stab of the Bhopal Hive. Attempts at gathering intelligence via reading bear no results, and almost all of their participants are annihilated. After Operation Swaraj, SRF A-01 would continue small-scale reconnaissance missions by taking advantage of any ongoing culling operations to break into enemy territory accruing numerous sacrifices in the Alternative Plan TSF unit.<ref name="Integral Works, pg. 22, 1992年 インド スワラージ作戦"></ref>
  • The Asuka Program begins in Japan. Riding alongside the Ministry of Defense's Youkou Program, the Imperial Household Department begins the program to develop the successor to the Type-82/F-4J Kai Zuikaku as the Imperial Royal Guard's next mainline TSF.
  • A large BETA group from the Dunhuang Hive begins advancing towards the South China Sea. The Unified Front of China, the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force, and Korean and Vietnamese volunteer armies build a defense line at the Jialing River, flowing north of Chongqing. Though all forces fight hard, exhausted from conducting delaying operations the previous year, the front collapses at the dawn of the new year. Until the refugees have evacuated, the rear guard under the Continental Expeditionary Force Northern Region 7th Division, 71st Tactical Armor Wing, 2nd Tactical Armored Battalion defends them to the last.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the Su-27 Zhuravlik. Despite being a 2nd-generation machine developed using the F-14 Tomcat's technical data, supplied to Sufoni by Grunnan, troubles with the initial model make it unpopular with many pilots. Afterwards, procurement is swiftly terminated with the introduction of the improved Su-37 Terminator.

1993

1993: BETA advance into South-East Asia.
F-4Js surrounded during Operation 6-9.
  • BETA gain total control over the European continent. With the collapse of the Northern European front that had continued to resist to the end, the European Union GHQ declares a complete withdrawal of all forces and the abandonment of Europe. After this, the European nations establish forward bases on the islands off the coast of the continent, so as to continue culling operations in preparation for a future campaign to reclaim Eurasia.
  • Construction of H16, the Chongqing Hive, begins in China. Despite a fierce defensive action mounted by the Unified Front of China and the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force, the fierce assault of the oncoming BETA forced them into a retreat.
  • Operation 9-6: An ambush operation by allied Chinese and Korean forces to annihilate a large BETA group heading towards Dalian, China, at the coast near the Korean border, is carried out. Although the Imperial Japanese Continental Expeditionary Force participates by supporting from the flank, two battalions are destroyed in a surprise BETA attack. Afterwards, the invasion of Dalian is avoided by the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons; the main force of the Imperial Army is forced to temporarily withdraw to the riverbank at Harbin. The losses taken during this operation, however, are enough to further weaken the frontline.
  • Operation 9-6: A 19-year-old Jinguuji Marimo survives the BETA ambush on the Expeditionary Force.

1994

1994: The BETA invade China from the west and south.
  • The BETA group proceeding south from Kashgar gains complete control of the Indian subcontinent. As a result, the eastward BETA momentum increases, and the Unified Front of China is caught in an inescapable dire situation. The armed forces from nations that had lost their territory to the BETA are later incorporated under UN military command.
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan, backed by the previously-revised Military Service Law, passes a bill to lower conscription age. Mobilization of student volunteer soldiers restricted to duties in the rear begins, the reason being the increasing number of years the BETA War was dragging out to be.
  • The United Nations calls for preliminary plans for Alternative IV, in order to replace the stagnated Alternative III. Japan, Canada and Australia announce their candidacy for the bid to host the 4th Alternative Plan. Each nation begins preparation for the required personnel and equipment, working to secure the bid in order to increase their international presence. The bidding race grows into a political issue between the UN Security Council permanent members; Japan, in particular, locks horns with Chinese and Soviet misgivings over having an Imperial Japanese-headed Alternative IV, as well as with the USA's own political goals. In turn, Japan is backed by Canada, Australia, and an Australia-supported UK in her efforts to win the bid to host Alternative IV.
  • The 20-year-old Kouzuki Yuuko, invited by the UN, advances the verification of quantum causality theory.
  • February: In Japan, the much-desired, purely domestically-developed Type-94 Shiranui, developed by the three companies of Fugaku, Mitsuhishi, and Kawazaki, by utilizing the data from licensed-production of the Type-89 Kagerou, is finally deployed in combat for the first time. The first TSF to boast of a high level of performance conforming to 3rd generation TSF standards, strict adherence to the design used would resulted in meager adaptability for future modification plans, leading to complications in its upgrade plans in later years.
  • The ECTSF tech demonstrator machine, the ESFP (Experimental Surface Fighter Program) prototype, is finally completed by British Aerospace, after a long process of independent development by the UK. Control of the ESFP is transferred to the Euro Fightas, and the Rain Dancers Squadron, with the backing of the British government, is dispatched to the UN's European force, with the aim of appealing to various European nations via a demonstration of its capabilities in live combat.
  • The United States first deploys the F-18E/F Super Hornet, a high-performance all-rounder upgrade of the F-18 Hornet. With the completion and deployment of a unit with such an excellent cost-performance ratio, the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat, which until then had continued to defend its absolute position as the Navy's mainline TSF, would begin to be pursued.
  • The Unified Front of China first deploys the J-10. A 2nd-generation machine covertly joint-developed by Shengdu and IEI, based on the F-16C, it would later becomes the most successful F-16-derived TSF.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the MiG-29 Lastochka. Developed by the Mikoyam Guluvich Design Bureau, it is a high-performance TSF, said to be the culmination of Soviet 2nd-generation machines, with mobility and close-combat capabilities pushed to their limits. However, the MiG-29 did not flourish in domestic procurement, and a lifeline for the TSF is sought overseas.

1995

  • Construction begins on H17, the Mandalay Hive, in the Burmese territory of Mandalay. In response, the UN, along with the South-East Asian nations, begin construction on the Malaysian Peninsula Defence Line, as well as a final defence line at the Kula Gulf of Solomon Islands.
  • The UN, after scrutiny of proposals by candidate nations, decides to adopt the Japanese plan for Alternative IV as a replacement for the stagnated Alternative III when the research of Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko of the Imperial University catches their eye. Japan's proposal is adopted and elevated in status to the Fourth Alternative Plan without a preparatory period, with data produced by similar plans in the past immediately requisitioned for the Alternative Plan, while Dr. Yuuko is immediately sworn in as the plan's chief supervisor. Establishment of the Alternative IV HQ could not be done in time for the sudden decision, and a in-name only headquarters is set up at the Imperial University's Applied Quantum Physics Research Facility. Meanwhile, in opposition to Alternative IV, the USA continued their coercive lobbying for the revival of their own anti-BETA plan.
  • The United States and her Alternative V allies begin the infrastructure construction in space for the purposes of completing their colony ship backup plan to Alternative IV.
  • Work on the 00 Unit by both Alternative IV chief supervisor Kouzuki Yuuko and Professor Kiriyama of the Imperial University begins. In order to set up the 00 Unit's candidate selection pool, the 207th Training School is established at the Imperial Army's Hakuryou Base, under the direct control of Alternative IV. Outwardly, the 207th would be presented as any other training school.
  • With Japan's selection as the host nation of Alternative IV, more Imperial Army facilities are opened up to units of the UN military's Far East Force called upon by the plan. Hakuryou Base is one of them; units of the UN Pacific 11th Force are also stationed bases in Kadena, Iwakuni, Misawa, Chitose, and other locations.
  • The UN starts the Blue Book Program, the goals of which partially align with those of the Alternative Plans.
  • As part of the revision of their Military Service Law, Japan passes an amendment to extend the conscription effort to include unmarried women over the age of 18.
  • The Soviet Union begins the ПЗ (Total Eclipse) Plan, their own anti-BETA initiative to recapture their national territory. Due to the very small size of the plan and its research, little is known about it to others.
  • The UN Statistics Division announces that the world population has fallen to approximately 50% of the pre-BETA Wars figure. However, it is also noted that the rate of decline had vastly fallen compared to the 30% worldwide casualty rate immediately after the first year of the BETA War; the introduction of TSFs, which allowed military forces to check against the intensification of destruction wrought by the BETA, was attributed as a reason.
  • The USA, throughout the bidding process for Alternative IV and even after, continues to pressure the UN into ceasing operations for Alternative IV prematurely, and reviving their own anti-BETA strategy as Alternative V. Measure taken include suggestions from the USA that they would consider withdrawing US troops from the UN's low-orbit space fleet and from the orbital defense network if the UN did not acquiesce.
  • The United States of America first deploys the modernized version of the F-15C Eagle, the F-15E Strike Eagle. This is in part due to a shift in focus from the production of 3rd-generation TSFs into updating 2nd-generation designs to keep them relevant in the frontline role.
  • Yashiro Kasumi, a man-made 6th-generation esper produced during the final hours of Alternative III, is requisitioned and transferred to Alternative IV at the same time alongside other resources. Her powerful reading ability would later provide a great contribution to Alternative IV.
  • Soldier-class BETA, the smallest BETA strain to be encountered, are first confirmed after studying several specimens of the species.

1996

1996: The BETA continue their relentless push into China.
  • The construction of H18, the Ulan Bator Hive, in Mongolian territory, begins.
  • Asian nations that have become part of the war zones appeal to Australia, and other nations in Oceania for assistance, and the relocation of their state functions begin. However, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore continued their defence to maintain their own territories As of 2001, Malaysia and Singapore are still largely in control of their regions.
  • The Consolidation of Southeast Asian Nations, COSEAN, is established by the many South-East Asian countries that have lost their territories to facilitate indirect cooperation with the UN. Their objection to being incorporated into direct UN control is due to distrust from being forced to participate in Operation Swaraj for the sake of Alternative III's goals.
  • Allegiance, an armed right-wing Christian group, rapidly expands, especially through their popularity with disfranchised youths in refugee camps, increasing related protests and demonstration activities. Their religious doctrine is one that regards the BETA as a God-given test of humanity, and the possible destruction of humanity as merely the carrying out of God's will, going as far as to begin to oppose anti-BETA efforts.
  • As an insurance measure in response to unease over the UN's forced status elevation of the Japanese-formulated Alternative IV, and its excessively absurd contents, the United States proposes the call for a fifth, backup plan. With the backing of South American and African nations, it is approved.
  • The Eurasian nations, opposing the USA's attempt to reintroduce its G-Bomb-centric plan as a backup for Alternative V, and equally concerned with what they saw as a preposterous vision for Alternative IV, presented a counter-proposal to the UN in the form of a development project for advanced TSF technology, Project PROMINENCE. The plan would be approved, and its HQ set up in the UN-administered Yukon Base in Alaska. Work begins on expanding Yukon Base for the project.
  • The Channel Archipelago Base Group established under the jurisdiction of the UK is transferred to the EU Force, and renamed the Mont Saint-Michel Fortress. The actual fortress, implemented as an outpost for the recapture of the European continent, also contains European historical heritage left behind by the various cultures of Europe. The fortress is designated by the UN and EUF as an important location equaling the UK-based Dover Base Group.
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan passes an amendment further lowering the male draft age. This results in a de facto full mobilization of students.
  • Starting with Kitakyushu, a type-2 evacuation advisory is announced throughout all of Kyushu.
  • The Unified Front of China begins licensed-production of the Su-27-based J-11.
  • Sweden deploys Europe's first 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, the JAS-39 Gripen.

1997

  • The Arabian Peninsula front that had withstood the BETA invasion for over ten years collapses. The African Union and Middle East Coalition forces retreat to beyond the Suez Canal to rebuild the frontline, and barely hold back the invasion of the African continent.
  • Europe and the United States of America receive a signal from the Daedalus Project's Icarus I probe. Rough data analysis reveals a terrestrial exoplanet of AA-grade habitability in the Barnard's Star system in the constellation of Ophiuchus. As a detailed analysis would take several months, the USA, taking the Eurasian nations into account, proposes an amendment to the next Alternative Plan to includes colonizing the planet. Pointing out the excessively good timing of this news, some call it a hoax for the USA to push their own Alternative proposal through.
Colony ship under construction.
  • The plan to construct large spaceships at a Lagrange point under Alternative V begins. The reality of two Alternative Plans existing side by side could be called an abnormal situation. This matter becomes the turning point that makes clear the difference in the anti-BETA strategy of the Oceanian and Eurasian nations and Canada, and the pro-American African and South American nations.
  • The special task force under the direct control of the Alternative Plans, Special Task Force A-01, is established. The unit, regiment-sized during its commissioning, draws its personnel from the 207th Training School under the coverage of Alternative IV, and is completely independent of the UN Force chain of command, being responsible only for the tasks required of Alternative IV.
  • The Communist Party of the People's Republic of China makes the decision to temporarily retreat from the Chinese mainland due to the BETA advance. The Taiwanese government announces that the PRC government's official functions would be housed in the Presidential Office Building of Taiwan.
  • The Empire of Japan's Type-97 Fubuki, initially put together during the development of the Type-94 Shiranui as a testbed for 3rd-generation technology development, is manufactured and deployed as a high-performance training TSF. The unit would later be elevated to that of a replacement candidate for the ageing F-4J Gekishin.
  • The Soviet Union, exasperated at the unreliability of the Su-27, sets their sights on the Su-27M2 variant, independently developed by the Sufoni Design Bureau. It is quickly reworked into the Su-37 Terminator, and the unit is pressed into service soon after.<ref name="Integral Works, pg. 24, 1997年 ソ連 Su-37戦術機を配備開始">Integral Works, pg. 24, 1997年 ソ連 Su-37戦術機を配備開始</ref>
  • Brazil and Australia began to accept refugees from People Republic of China.

1998

  • January: Japanese forces participate in the Gwangju Operation, in concert with the Unified Front of China, to support UN and COSEAN forces in their withdrawal from the Korean peninsula. The Lieutenant-General Ayamine Incident occurs, referred to as the "tragedy of the Gwangju Operation"; under Lieutenant-General Ayamine Shuukaku, Japanese forces were prioritized towards saving local citizens who had been denied refuge by COSEAN, and the redirection of combat forces resulted in the destruction of the UN HQ for the operation area, as well as heavy losses for the UN Forces.
  • After the operation, the UN demanded that Lieutenant-General Ayamine be handed over to them for an international military tribunal. Caught between opposition from the Imperial Japanese forces defending the Lieutenant-General's actions, and the threat of UN support being withdrawn from Alternative IV, Imperial Japanese Prime Minister Sakaki Kurechika was forced to prioritize the nation's international standing over domestic support of Shuukaku's actions, who would, under international trial, be convicted of desertion under enemy fire during the Gwangju Operation. This chain of events would eventually form the basis for the 12/5 Incident.
  • July: BETA proceeding east from the Chongqing Hive make landfall in Japanese territory, beginning the BETA Invasion of Japan. Landing on the west coast of the Sea of Japan, beginning with Kitakyushu, in just one week they invade the Kyushu and Chuugoku, resulting in 36 million victims. The IJMDF Western Group is caught in-between the Kyuushu group and scattered landings of additional BETA groups on the western shores of Chugoku, and are annihilated in a strategic BETA pincer attack. Shikoku is later given up by the defending forces, as they had counted on the timely re-positioning of flanking reinforcements to annihilate the incoming BETA group there. A large part of the failure to repel the invasion is attributed to the super-sized typhoon that struck the region during the initial week of invasion, caused by climate changes as a result of BETA activities on mainland Asia/Eurasia; this prevented the deployment of naval forces in any significant capacity and contributed to the lack of response to the invasion.
  • The BETA advance is halted in central Honshu; the Defence of Kyoto begins. A month-long defensive battle takes place, pitting the Imperial Japanese/US garrison/UN forces against the oncoming BETA just in front of Kyoto.
  • August 10: Kyoto falls at the end of a fierce one-month long defense. The capital is moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.
  • The BETA group that had invaded Japan resurfaces around Sadogashima and begin the construction of H21, the Sadogashima Hive. By this time, 30%(36 million) of the Japanese population had been wiped out. Evacuation directives are issued for the Kinki and Tokai regions; a mass movement of 25 million people begins (a portion migrate to Australia).
  • September: The in-depth analysis of data from Ikaros 1 is completed, confirming the existence of the AA-class exoplanet in the Bernard Star System. The US government increases their pressure on the UN for the transition of the Alternative Plans to Alternative V; it was assumed that once support had been secured for Alt. V, the cycle of Hive assault with G-Bombs and G-Element acquisition to repeat the process would eventually give them a monopoly on G-Elements in Eurasia. At the same time, NASA and the ESA released a joint statement on the failure of the Daedalus Project, as contact with Ikaros 1 had ceased.
  • October: Even as BETA activity stagnates in the region of Nagato, the US armed forces unilaterally break the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan, and withdraw all US forces stationed in Japan; the USA cited a frequent tendency of the Japanese forces to disobey orders as the primary reason. The Imperial Japanese government had vehemently opposed the usage of G-bombs or nuclear weaponry on its territory, citing the decision as taken to avoid the additional loss of pilots in close-combat. UN and Japanese leaders also recognized the treaty-breaking as part of the pressure exerted by the USA to support Alternative V.
  • Alternative IV headquarters relocates to Sendai. Similar measures are carried out for the Hakuryou Base's 207th Training School; they are temporarily housed in the Nerima Garrison, before completing the shift to Sendai as well.
  • The BETA resume their eastward advance, gaining complete control of West Kanto. The IJMDF retreats from Shizuoka to Yamanashi and Saitama to prepare to intercept the BETA advance, but the BETA group mysteriously changes direction just before reaching the imperial capital of Tokyo. The advance stagnates after passing south of the Izu peninsula, and becomes a stalemate at the Tama River. Round-the-clock culling operations continue. An offshoot BETA group gains control of Yokohama, and Hakuyrou Base is destroyed.
  • Reconnaissance satellite intelligence confirms the construction of H22, the Yokohama Hive, and its unprecedented rapid growth.
  • In light of the loss of West Kanto to the BETA and the construction of the Yokohama Hive, the Imperial Japanese government prepares to relocate from Tokyo to the secondary capital of Sendai.
  • UN Joint Military Command decides on the basic strategy of enclosing the BETA on the Eurasian continent from the Kamchatka-Japan-Taiwan-Philippines to Africa-England defense lines.
  • Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko proposes, to the United Nations, an operation to capture the Yokohama Hive, as the only way to obtain more G-Elements and achieve progress on Alternative IV. Her proposal coincided with Imperial strategic thinking, having learned from Sadogashima, that the Hive should be taken as soon as possible while it was still in a developing stage. As a counter against the USA's increasing pressure to transit to Alternative V, approval for the operation is immediately given, and to avoid the influence of the USA in the operation, COSEAN is approached for force participation.
  • The Imperial Diet of Japan passes an amendment to further lower the draft age for women to 16 years old; the amendment was implemented on the same day.
  • The European ESFP is officially designated the EF-2000 Typhoon; pre-production models are first delivered to testing units in the UK.
  • France first deploys their independently-developed 3rd-generation Tactical Surface Fighter, the Rafale.

1999

  • The BETA begin construction of H23, the Olyokminsk Hive, and H24, the Khatanga Hive, in Soviet territory. At the same time, US commitments to Europe in anti-BETA operations during this period of renewed pressure on the Eastern Front by the BETA results in widespread civilian demonstrations against the USA.
  • August 5: Operation Lucifer, the greatest large-scale counteroffensive operation in Asia, second only to Operation Palaiologos in the entirety of the BETA Wars, begins. The priority objectives are the destruction of the Yokohama Hive and the recovery of Honshu Island. The UN deploys Special Task Force A-01 to secure G-Elements and keep a check on the like-minded US forces.
  • August 6: The USA, with little warning to allied forces, deploys two G-Bombs at the Yokohama Hive, eradicating the surface Hive structure and its surrounding BETA. This is the first successful Hive capture in human history. The remaining BETA begin their retreat towards Asia, suffering heavy losses from UN/COSEAN TSF/naval pursuit forces.
  • August 8: Operation Lucifer officially ends with the capture of the Yokohama Hive. Despite the victory, the G-Bomb deployment further intensifies anti-USA sentiment in the Empire of Japan.
  • Debate over the dangers of the G-Bomb explodes in many countries. Having seen the overwhelming might of the G-bombs firsthand in Operation Lucifer, many Eurasian and some African nations erupt in debate over the threat. In contrast, with actual proof of their power, countries that originally supported the American plan begin to strongly advocate the use of G-bombs. Meanwhile, the Soviet and Eurasian nations refocus their efforts on the recapture of their original territory, and on Project Prominence.
  • To serve as the headquarters of Alternative IV, construction of a UN military base at the site of Yokohama Hive is requested by Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko. The UN immediately approves the plan as a form of opposition against the USA's advocacy of G-Bombs. UN military command would later order the immediate withdrawal of US armed forces from the area at the commencement of construction work.
  • Reconstruction work on defensive systems begins in previously-occupied West Japan, along with the large-scale intake and reception of COSEAN and UN military forces.
  • December: Construction begins on the Yokohama Base. The original Hive structure is left intact to facilitate further research on the BETA.
  • The Soviet Union first deploys the Su-47 Berkut, an experimental enhancement of Sufoni Design Bureau's independently-developed Su-37 Terminator.
  • Boening's TSF development division begins the Phoenix Initiative, a low-cost upgrade plan to move the F-15 to 3rd generation standards through mechanical modernization.
  • The United States of America deploys the 3rd-generation amphibious A-12 Avenger.

2000s

2000

A Type-00C.
  • The construction of the Verkhoyansk and Evensk Hives begin in their respective Soviet territories. To halt the BETA invasion of Kamchatka, the Soviets, in conjunction with the UN Far East forces, launch a large-scale counteroffensive operation against the BETA. The Imperial Japanese Navy also participated as part of the UN Far East Fleet in this operation.
  • January: The section of Yokohama Base dedicated to the hosting of Alternative IV is completed; the Alt. IV research institute is moved from the Imperial University into Yokohama Base, along with the 207th Training Unit, which was previously temporarily relocated to the IJA Nerima Garrison.
  • May: The EF-2000 Typhoon is first deployed in actual combat by the British Army and the United Nations European Region military. As part of defensive strategy, the West German Army's Cerberus Battalion is prioritized as the first UN unit to deploy the Typhoon.
  • UN personnel in support of Allegiance release various data as well as photographs of a G-bomb blast epicenter. Arguments and apprehension over the dangers posed by the G-bombs erupt within the United States Congress, which had previously been comprised mainly of Alternative V supporters. Lockweed Mardin, which had fallen behind in TSF development due to the development of G-Bombs, manages to gain influence in Congress, attracting the attention of Alt. V detractors even as it sought to get closer to those with links to Alternative IV.
  • A third movement that supports neither Alternative IV nor V emerges from the groups questioning the viability of Alternative V. This movement, clashing with both groups of Alternative Plan supporters behind the scenes, is wholly opposed to the use of BETA-derived technology, instead placing all their support behind Project Prominence in the hopes of an eventual assault on the Kashgar Hive.
  • The Japan-America Joint Tactical Surface Fighter Development Program, the XFJ Program, the plan to modify the Type-94 Shiranui, is approved by the Imperial Diet, as part of a plan to obtain cutting-edge TSF technology from the USA. With the F-4 approaching the end of its service life, the debate concerning the selection of the next TSF to replace it becomes complicated. An official point of compromise is reached in the adoption of the Japan-America joint development plan proposed by Lieutenant Colonel Iwaya Eiji, using the official stance of joint development to raise the standard of Japanese development technology as a guise for its second purpose, to obtain as many of ㅣ the United States' latest technologies as they can get away with. Meanwhile, in the USA, as a result of Boening's vigorous lobbying, they receive the contract for the XFJ Program, successfully win over the anti-Alternative V faction, and are approved of by Congress.

2001

  • The UN Yokohama Base commences operations. Though only 70% complete, main base functions had achieved more or less 100% operational status, full opening is authorized. Construction of the incomplete sections continue.
  • Dr. Kouzuki Yuuko confers with a delegation, comprised of political and business members, from the pro-Alternative faction in the United States, in order to set up a framework of support for Alternative IV. At the same time, Yoroi Sakon of the Imperial Ministry of Information, Foreign Affairs Section Two, also contacts pro-Alt. IV UN members.
  • March 14: The United States Army begins domestic deployment of the F-22A Raptor.
  • Professor Yuuko and Alternative IV executives put forth a formal request for the requisition of the HI-MAERF project. The transfer of all XG-series units are approved of in US Congress by a small margin, and the transfer of all unit airframes and development staff was made immediate by a presidential order. The transfer of the XG-series to Alternative IV further intensifies the confrontation between UN members supporting either one of the two Alternative Plan factions
  • September 21: The Yukon Base Incident, a large-scale terrorist attack on the UN Yukon Base in Alaska (later referred to as the "day of infamy") is jointly carried out by the armed paramilitary group Allegiance and the Refugee Liberation Front, the goal of the attack being to force UN, US, and Soviet authorities to capitulate to their demands for non-conditional acceptance of refugees from the frontlines, as well as awarding them the right to vote. US Air Force units were involved in combat against BETA released from the base's research facilities, including Laser-class BETA. The conflict was eventually resolved by a combination of armed resistance from escaped Project Prominence test teams and counter-terror tactics from US/Soviet special forces. The fighting done during the incident was noted to have been the most major armed conflict in the region since the nuclear bombardment of the second Hive landing unit in Athabasca.
  • November 11: The BETA invasion of Niigata was successfully predicted and intercepted. Special Task Force A-01 is involved in a secondary operation to capture live BETA specimens; the operation was a success, but resulted in the loss of 3 members. The 12th and 14th armored division of the IJA's Mainland Defense Force stop the assault at the Chuetsu and Kaetsu Provinces.
  • November 29: The XM3 TSF operating system, making use of new concepts, developed by Kouzuki Yuuko with the aid of Shirogane Takeru, begins demonstration tests at Yokohama Base in absolute secrecy.
  • December 5 to 6: The 12/5 Incident, an attempted coup d'etat by radical members of the Japanese Imperial Army, involving numerous young officers and led by Captain Sagiri Naoya, commences with the assassination of the Prime Minister and several cabinet members. Answering to a formal request from the provisional government in Sendai, UN and US forces were dispatched, in concert with loyalist Japanese forces, with the intention of armed intervention against the coup forces. After the death of Captain Sagiri Naoya, the coup forces swiftly surrender; shortly after, all members of the provisional government resign from their positions. Actions taken by the Shogun in the aftermath of the incident eventually result in strengthened relations between the UN Alternative 4 program and the Japanese government.<ref name="Integral Works, pg. 26, 2001年 日本 12・5事件"></ref>
  • December 10: Field test of XM3 using the Type 77/F-4JX Gekishin and the Type 97 Fubuki TSFs. Failure of containment apparatus allows BETA specimens being studied to break free during the combat trials; as test units were not armed with live weapons, this causes the deaths of several pilots and other personnel. In the wake of the incident, several high-ranking UN and civil officials in Yokohama Base are reshuffled from the base.
  • December 10 to December 17: The 00 Unit is completed.

Empire of Japan

The Empire of Japan.

The Empire of Japan is an island nation located on the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, and part of the Far East Defense Line situated in the Pacific region. A small country but technologically-advanced nation surrounded by water and close to highly volatile volcanic activity, these natural barriers, however, have not stopped the nation from coming under heavy BETA attack.
In 1867, the Shogunate family and anti-Shogun daimyo united for a common cause to overthrow the pro-western government, and established the restoration of imperial rule with a new Shogun and the 5 Regent Houses of Koubuin, Ikaruga, Saionji, Kujo, and Takatsukasa. When the Japanese surrendered in 1945 at the end of World War II, they were allowed to keep their imperial government intact, although their power over the nation was lessened, compared to the Japanese government that was created to run the nation with a democracy system. When the Cold War started shortly after the end of World War II, Japan was pulled in by the United States to act as their main Far East base, with the island nation undergoing controlled rearmament, supported by US funding, to keep the Soviets in check. However, the BETA invasion in 1973 threw a wrench into the plans of every nation, and even Japan, far removed from the center-point of the conflict at that time, felt the need to arm itself with anti-BETA tactics and weapon systems.
The nation remained relatively safe from the BETA from 1973 to 1998, largely because of the enormous distance between the BETA's landing at Kashgar and their subsequent battles with Chinese and Soviet forces. Nevertheless, Japan was often called upon to provide aid in the form of auxiliary forces and materials, and took on a larger role in the war when the nation successfully lobbied for the next Alternative plan to be hosted in their nation in 1994. When the USA completed their G-Bomb research and production, the Empire of Japan was one of the nations opposed to the new G-Bomb-centric strategy proposed by the USA; several measures taken by them to oppose the plan include providing technological aid to the European Union, in the form of 3rd generation TSF data.
Japan's first large-scale involvement in the war started in 1998 when the BETA completed their sweep of the Korean Peninsula and began moving for the Japanese islands. This would be the first of many battles in which the Japanese would be tested, both in combat capabilities and national abilities. Despite their zeal, the armed forces of the Empire of Japan were no match against the relentless BETA, and by 1998 half the country had fallen. As a result, the Imperial Army underwent a force restructure, becoming the combined Imperial Japanese Army/Mainland Defence Force, or IJA/MDF. In 1999, the establishment of the Yokohama Hive on the mainland prompted the Empire to plan a preemptive strike against the BETA to prevent the enemy from gaining a real and solid foothold in the Far East Defense Line. Operation Lucifer proved successful despite numerous setbacks, and the capture of an intact Hive allowed the Japanese to retain their position on the Far East Defense Line.
In light of the weakened Japanese military after Operation Lucifer, the government of Japan allowed United Nations forces to set up a base of operations in the former Yokohama Base, as well as for US forces to return to the nation as foreign garrisons. However, numerous IJA/MDF elements were dissatisfied with letting a second armed foreign entity in the form of the UN establish a base in Japan, and were not at all pleased to see the US Army return. Throughout the years up to 2001, the Empire continued to weather attacks from the Sadogashima Hive with varying degrees of success, while pressure from the international community to deliver on Alternative IV continued to mount. Despite the Empire of Japan's proximity to a BETA Hive, political strife and internal dissent remains rife within the nation.
Even as the BETA continued to mount attacks against the Imperial Japanese forces from the Sadogashima Hive, the nation was hit by a sudden insurgency in the form of the 12/5 Incident. While the IJA/MDF suffered casualties from the attack, they, and the Imperial Navy, managed to mount an all-out offensive alongside UN and US forces on the Sadogashima Hive on the 25th of December, 2001, in Operation 21st. Despite the victory gained at Sadogashima, the hard-fought battle had taken a toll on the Empire's armed forces, and recovery of their fighting strength was still incomplete when the BETA launched a counterattack on Yokohama Base. Initially focused on defending Kyoto from BETA stragglers, the IJA/MDF later responded to UN requests to provide reinforcements, and proceeded to launch an assault on the BETA rearguard retreating from Yokohama. The IJA/MDF continued to pursue fleeing stragglers to the west coast of Japan, where the Imperial Navy took over the chase. This final battle exhausted most of their combat strength for the time being.
Following the success of Operation Ouka, the United Nations realized the close-quarter capabilities and Hive infiltration potential of the Type-00 Takemikazuchi. Seeking a method to control the inevitable race for G-Elements, the UN requested for a squadron of Type-00s to be evaluated for export, so as to allow Hive recapture operations to be conducted under the auspices of the UN. The First Independent Northern Squadron was thus sent to Siberia in early 2002, making it the first time an Imperial Royal Guard unit had been seen in overseas operations. Following 2003, the Empire of Japan, together with UN, US, and other allied forces, launched Operation Sledgehammer on the Cheorwon Hive in Korea, and successfully took the Hive without use of strategic weapons.

Japan's Organization

The Empire of Japan Structure.

The current administration of Japan is more focused on an elected board of politicians known as the Imperial Diet, with governing power mostly residing with the Prime Minister of Japan, the third highest administrative authority in the nation. They are responsible for most of the administrative policies of the Empire, such as the decision to deploy troops overseas, the lowering of the draft age, and the relocation of refugees and resources following Operation Lucifer. The Imperial Diet suffered a major blow during the 12/5 Incident, where most of them were killed in the initial stages of the uprising by IJA/MDF Captain Sagiri Naoya and his forces. The Shogunate established a provisional government to restore order after the incident. A branch of the government, the Ministry of Defence oversees all projects to safeguard the Empire of Japan, including operations of the IJMDF. Under them are also various projects and plans to strengthen the fighting capabilities of the Empire of Japan as a whole; The Weapons Technology Development Authority, responsible for the development of the EML-99X and the XFJ Plan, is one such branch of the Ministry.
Due to their conditional surrender in WWII, the Empire of Japan was allowed to keep its imperial court intact. The Shogunate supports and places the Emperor of Japan as its highest authority, and has its own armed force, the Imperial Japanese Royal Guard, to ensure the security of the Shogunate and the Emperor. The current Shogunate draws its candidates for the position of Shogun from the Five Regent Houses of Koubuin (煌武院), Ikaruga (斑鳩), Saionji (斉御司), Kujou (九條), and Takatsukasa (崇宰), noble families who were descended from the ruling Shogun's clan prior to the 1900s. So far, two Shoguns have been known by name; Saionji Tsunemori (斉御司 経盛)[1] served during the 1998 BETA Invasion of Japan, while the most recent Shogun is Koubuin Yuuhi.
The Regent Houses are thus amongst the highest-ranking nobles of Imperial Japan, superseded only by the Emperor of Japan. Their rank color is blue, with the appointed Shogun donning purple. Each of the Regent Houses also have their own independent security units, which can usually be identified by the red garb they wear. Under the Regent Houses are the fudai, hereditary vassals with many generations of direct service to the Shogun, and by extension, the Regent Houses, under their name. Many of them serve in important positions; Takamura Masatada, for example, and the Takamura family in general, were prominent fudai responsible for several weapon development projects. The fudai wear yellow as their rank color. One rank under the fudai are the samurai families, who wear white as their rank color. Most serve under the fudai as their direct subordinates. The last rank of those serving in the Royal Guard and Shogunate are those not related to the samurai families, and thus do not have any actual status or nobility within the Shogunate. They wear grey as their rank color.

Armed Forces of Japan

Imperial Japanese Military Defense Force.

The armed forces of the Empire of Japan are some of the more war-experienced militaries that have fought against the BETA. Since the 1990s, Japan's military forces have been involved in various operations both abroad and local; examples include Operation 6/9 and the evacuation of Gwanju for the former, and the 1998 Invasion of Japan, Operation Lucifer and the following recapture of Honshu, and the Invasion of Niigata for the latter. Because of their combat experience, the Empire of Japan's military is regarded as roughly equal to the Soviets' and the United Kingdom's. Currently, the armed forces are split into several distinct branches; the Imperial Japanese Army/Mainland Defence Force, the Imperial Japanese Aerospace Force, the Imperial Japanese Navy, and the Imperial Royal Guard. In particular, the Mainland Defence Force and Imperial Guard's roles in the defence of Japan have influenced the strategic goals of the nation as a whole. The Empire of Japan's role in the Far East Defence Line is similar to that of the United Kingdom's strategic location and purpose on the European front, and as such both nations maintain a close relationship in terms of military cooperation and tactics sharing. Up until 2001, the Empire had been building up their armed forces for an assault on the Sadogashima Hive.
Collectively representing all land-based combat forces of the Empire, the IJA/MDF's main mission is to safeguard the Empire of Japan against the BETA in all land-based operations.
The Imperial Army was the primary branch of the Empire's land forces, and the primary representative of Japan when it came to joint operations with the troops of other nations. At that time, the Army was split into the Mainland Force, for home defence, and the Continental Expeditionary Forces, which carried out overseas operations.[3] Examples include Operation 6/9, as well as thinning operations on the continent of Eurasia. Their force structure includes direct assault forces such as TSFs and battle tanks, combat support forces, and air support forces such as combat helicopters and transport aircraft.
Following the 1998 BETA Invasion of Japan, the Imperial Armed Forces began to move towards the Mainland Defence Force concept to deal with the restructuring of the Far East Defence Line. This new organization is closer to that of a combined task force, with forces drawn from all branches of the military to contribute to the defence of the nation. As such, it falls under the scope of responsibilities of the Imperial Armed Force's General Staff, with secondary joint command shared by each branch of the Imperial Japanese military. Unlike the old Army structure which split the force into the Mainland and Continental Expeditionary Forces, the IJ/MDF have their forces split into the North, North-East, East, Central, and West regions.
However, while the Imperial Army and the Mainland Defence Force exist side-by-side, they are not the same organization, or even under the same command; it would be better described as both organizations just happening to share the same type of units most of the time, as the MDF's purpose was to improve reaction times against a BETA assault from the Asian and Eurasian continents, by forming a force structure that could accommodate speedy integration of various units from all three branches of the Japanese military. Navy and Aerospace Force units are frequently directly incorporated into MDF command structure when required, as opposed to the separate branches of land, sea, and air as seen in the Imperial Armed Forces at large, prior to the formation of the MDF.
Following the introduction of the Laser- and Heavy Laser-class, the Imperial Air Force was merged with the Empire's space forces to form the Imperial Aerospace Force. The IAF possesses several HSSTs which were provided by the United States Space Corps, as well as most of the former Imperial Air Force's aerial assets. In addition, the IAF retains its own Orbital Diver force, and plays a larger support role by operating several sweeper and construction ships for clearing space debris, as well as the construction and maintenance of orbital station assets.
As its name suggests, the Imperial Navy has full command of the naval forces of the Empire, and given its size and assets, the organization is regarded as the third strongest navy in the world. They often work closely with the IJA/MDF to head off BETA assaults on the Japanese mainland, and possess the most firepower in the entire nation; their modernized battleships are regarded as the world's strongest ships of that class. Currently, the bulk of the fleet is concentrated in the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, to defend Japan from incursions from the Chongqing Hive (H-16), Cheorwon Hive (H-20), and the Sadogashima Hive (H-21).[7] When not in combat operations, their primary role is maritime transport and logistics for TSFs and TSAs. Incorporated into the Navy are the Imperial Marines, who operate the TSAs and TSFs permanently attached to the naval fleets. They are often the first units to land in amphibious assault operations and have the crucial objective of establishing a beachhead and securing a landing area for the Imperial Army. Because of this very dangerous assignment, the Marines are often considered to be among the elite of eishi.
A military arm of the Empire staffed mostly by aristocrats and Japanese of royal lineage, the Royal Guards serve as the guards of the Shogunate. The smallest of all the military branches in the armed forces of Imperial Japan, the Royal Guard's main force are equivalent to two divisions of personnel, which are further split into four regiments's worth of people; three of the regiments are the 1st, 2nd, and the 24th Guard Regiments, with the various independent security units of the Regent Houses making up the numbers for the last regiment of personnel. Deployed equipment is all procured independent of the Empire of Japan's other armed forces, as according to the traditions of the Royal Guard;[8] in recent times, their equipment is also scaled according to the rank of its assigned user.
Answering directly to the ruling nobility rather than Ministry of Defence, they are a separate arm of the military dedicated to the security of the Shogun, the Regent Houses, and the legitimacy of the shogunate alongside the Japanese government. Despite their traditionalist tendencies, the Royal Guard does promote inter-branch cooperation within the military, and frequently engages in personnel exchanges with the Imperial Army/Mainland Defence Force if the need arises. As the primary security of the Shogunate, any threat to them, their seat of power in Kyoto or the assets they have around Japan will result in the mobilization of the Royal Guards against said threats, whether they are BETA or human. While the Royal Guards do not organize and carry out assaults against the BETA on the scale of the IJA/MDF, they will participate in such battles if they feel the need to or are requested to.

Yokohama Base

Yokohama Base & Hive.

Yokohama Base was the location for two different military bases staffed by two different armies. Prior to the BETA Invasion of Japan, Yokohama Base was a military complex staffed by the Imperial Army, and was also the home base for Unit 90, an anti-BETA bioweapons research group. The base was lost to the BETA after the invasion, and became the site of Objective 22, the Yokohama Hive. In 1999, Objective 22 was captured by allied forces in Operation Lucifer, along with its Hive Reactor intact. After its reconstruction, Yokohama became the main base of the UN 11th Force, and the headquarters of Alternative IV, where its chief researcher, Professor Kouzuki Yuuko, is stationed at. There are many reasons why the base was built on top of the Yokohama Hive; it was to serve as both a research facility and a means of safekeeping the newly-captured Hive Reactor,[1] and the site was also ground zero for the first two G-Bombs to be used in human history; the base itself served as a sort of experiment to see what were the long-term effects on humans living on a G-Bomb site.
The base is well-equipped, with shuttle launch sites, two large-scale runways, two mass drivers, vast training grounds, and is of close proximity to Tokyo Bay; static defensive emplacements are located around the facilities, and the base's various large access gates can be sealed to prevent entry by enemies, although unsealing them again would take at least half a year. Underground facilities are vast, owing to the fact that the interior of the base was derived from the original interior construction of the Yokohama Hive.[1] A main shaft connects the lowest levels to the topmost floor, and is protected by five barrier gates. The base's main area is the central gathering area, a wide open space in the interior of the base that is located one level below the base's surface; specifically, where the training field is. it is from this level that access to the other underground facilities of the base is allowed. The Yokohama Base's underground hangars are large enough to allow storage of several XG-70 units. Located at the deepest level is the Yokohama Hive Reactor, accessible either by the access hatch at the bottom of the main shaft, or the control and monitoring room at Level B33, which will give one a clear view of the Reactor. The Reactor not only serves as the base's primary object of research, but also as an energy source for the base.

Timeline

  • ~1999: Plans for the (re)construction of Yokohama Base are first laid down.
  • ~2001: Yokohama Base reaches 70% operational capacity.
  • October 22nd, 2001: Shirogane Takeru arrives at Yokohama Base.
  • November 29th, 2001: The TSF_Components#XM3 TSF operating system, making use of new operating concepts, developed by Kouzuki Yuuko with the aid of Takeru, begins demonstration tests at Yokohama Base in absolute secrecy.
  • December 5th to 6th: Yokohama Base deploys the 207th Tactical Armored Platoon during the 12/5 Incident.
  • December 10th: The XM3 Trials begin to test the XM3 OS for mass-production, and is followed by the Yokohama Base Incident.
  • December 10th to 17th, 2001: The 00 Unit is completed.
  • December 29th to 30th, 2001: The Defence of Yokohama Base; surviving BETA forces from Operation 21st attack the base. The results of this almost causes the destruction of Yokohama base along with the 00 Unit and incomplete XG-70b and XG-70d. This is narrowly averted at the cost of over 10,000 killed, wounded, or MIA personnel and the effective annihilation of all military forces stationed there.

207th Training Unit

The United Nations' 207th Training Unit is a pilot training formation that supplies trained pilots and commissioned officers to Alternative IV's military arm, Special Task Force A-01. Established at the Imperial Army Hakuryou Base during Alternative IV's early years to train new pilot candidates for Alternative IV and Special Task Force A-01, the subsequent fall and retaking of the Japanese mainland saw the 207th Unit re-activated in the newly reconstructed Yokohama Base in 1999.
In 1996, the 207th was officially named the 207th Eishi Training School, with pilot candidates split across various training flights. By 2001, the personnel size of the 207th had fallen drastically, and on various occasions it was identified as the 207th Training Flight. During the 12/5 Incident on the 5th of December, 2001, the flight was deployed as a combat unit, and given the temporary designation of 207th Tactical Armored Platoon. During the XM3 Trials, the former cadets of the 207th Training Flight's second class were given the designation of A207 Flight, and split into A and B squads. Initially operating TF-4Js, the unit switched to Type-97s for later batches of cadets.

Special Task Force A-01

Special Task Force A-01

A-01 is a United Nations special-forces unit formed to carry out Alternative IV. It reports directly to Alternative IV's executive officer, Professor Kouzuki Yuuko, and is tasked with absolute success rather than following any budgetary constraints. It originally began with an entire Wing of one-hundred and eight TSFs, of which the Valkyries eventually formed the 9th squadron. By the time the events of Alternative take place, the STF consists only of the Valkyries squadron. This is due to the Force's high casualty rate stemming from high-risk missions undertaken by the members on an almost regular basis.
Housed in Yokohama Base as of 2001, A-01's main choice of TSF is the Type-94 Shiranui, as nations hosting UN operations are legally required to provide local material and troops for the cause. A-01 also deployed both the XG-70b and XG-70d Susanoo Hi-MAREF units during Operation 21st and Operation Ouka respectively. Even when UN forces cannot be legally and rightfully deployed, A-01 may be dispatched through extralegal measures. Closely related to A-01 is the United Nations' 207th Training Unit, which serves as an instructional unit and manpower pool from which core A-01 pilots and members are selected from.

16th Guard Battalion

The Empire of Japan's 16th Guards Battalion of the Imperial Royal Guard is a TSF unit of the Royal Guards. Apart from being some of the first troops to have deployed the Type-00 Takemikazuchi, pilots of the 16th Guards Battalion are regarded as the best of the best by their peers, and the unit as a whole acts as a training unit[1] not unlike the IJA/MDF's Fuji Tactical Fighter Training Group. In 1998, the 16th Guard Battalion acted as the rearguard for Imperial Japanese forces stationed in Kyoto, executing missions against the BETA until all forces had retreated. By the end of the 1998 BETA Invasion of Japan, the 16th Guard Battalion had only 8 TSFs left due to battlefield attrition; using eishi from the 2nd Guard Regiment, the ranks of the 16th were refilled, and the unit was quickly re-organized as a frontline Royal Guard unit to be ready for re-activation with new TSFs by 2000.
Prior to their combat action in 1998, the battalion operated Type-82 Zuikakus. As of 2001, the 16th Guard Battalion operates Type-00 Takemikazuchis. While they are usually deployed alongside the 2nd Guard Regiment in Kyoto as security forces for the Shogunate, it is not uncommon for the battalion to take a more active role in combat operations.

The Empire of Japan's 1st Tactical Armor Regiment is a unit under the 1st Capital Defence Division, a military unit of the IJMDF's homeland defence divisions. Tasked with the protection of Kyoto, the 1st Tactical Armor Regiment is an elite unit staffed with skilled pilots for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the reclaimed capital of the Empire.
17th Flight Wardogs
An IJA/MDF squadron, Wardog was formed from the remains of Carronade and Drake Flights of the 1st Tactical Armor Regiment after an encounter with BETA on the borders of Seattle on the 6th of October, 2005, left both units with heavy casualties. Wardog acted directly under the control of the Seattle Japanese Imperial Forces commander, Major Jinguuji Marimo until her dismissal, with Wardog becoming a combat flight of the 1st Tactical Armor Regiment's 1st Battalion after the events of Episode 01. As an independent squadron under Major Jinguuji, Wardog was given various high priority assignments such as resource procurement and riot control, and were exempt from more mundane assignments such as routine patrol. These privileges were revoked when Wardog Squadron was absorbed into the 1st Tactical Armor Regiment.

Eastern European Socialist Alliance

An alliance of former eastern European Warsaw Pact nations, the Eastern European Socialist Alliance was formed to present a unified Eastern European front against the impending BETA invasion. With the separation of the Soviet Union from their satellite states in Eastern Europe, following the failure of Operation Palaiologos, the remaining eastern European Warsaw Pact nations of East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and others, with East Germany as their de-facto leader,[1] formed the Eastern European Socialist Alliance, as a response against the oncoming BETA advance. The Eastern European Socialist Alliance became the forefront of the war against the BETA in the early 1980s, following tactics set down by the strategy of a static defence line against the BETA advance. For a while, the strategy worked, until constantly high attrition rates took their toll on the defenders.
With their support from the Soviets cut off by the BETA invasion, and with the failure of the Oder-Neisse Defence Line in 1983, the Eastern European Socialist Alliance was pushed back with great loss of life and material by the BETA, and its continued existence was made possible only by the intervention of the European Union. Little is known of the Eastern European Socialist Alliance's governing organization(s), but given that the name of "alliance" is used, and with its armed forces always referred to as their respective armies and never as a single entity, there should not be any governing body on the scale of the United Nations or European Union that is in control of the EESA.

EESA Armed Forces

With their current numbers, the Eastern European Socialist Alliance is no longer capable of military operations on the scale of other international organizations. In modern times, they exists both independently and as part of the European Union, providing both troops and material to the European Union. The Eastern European Socialist Alliance's tactical doctrine, down to personal equipment and TSFs, were mostly inherited from when it was part of the Warsaw Pact with the Soviet Union. In recent times, with military exchanges starting up between East and West Germany, western technology is beginning to see introduction to the other allied Eastern Europe nations.
The German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany, and often shortened to GDR, or DDR in its native language, was formerly a satellite state of the Soviet Union, with a one-party government led by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, backed by a well-trained military. Because of Soviet support, the nation was able to achieve a high level of industrialization, one that was second only to the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, and was able to produce its own weapons to sustain its military forces.
Even with the emphasis of its industrial strength on military matters, due to the Cold War-era in which the nation was formed by, its citizens still managed to achieve good living conditions. However, with the onset of the BETA War, even that industrial strength was eventually overtaxed in a war unmatched by any human conflict in history. As of 2000, the GDR is in an alliance with West Germany, similar to the situation between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan.
Often abbreviated as the NVA, the Nationale Volksarmee (People's National Army) is the primary branch of the GDR's armed forces. Because of the GDR's landlocked location, focus falls mostly on the land forces, with naval forces regarded as secondary, and the air forces having taken a hit in both reputation and numbers following the BETA invasion. During the 1980s, the NVA's main TSF was the MiG-21 Balalaika, with the MiG-23 Cheburashka in use by select special forces. As of 2000, the MiG-23 and the MiG-27 Aligatori are the mainstay of the NVA; western-aided unit conversions, such as the MiG-31M, and the MiG-29OVT jointly developed by the East Germans in Project Prominence and the Soviets, are proceeding rapidly as well.
Often times, the TSF units organized by the NVA are named after their commanding officer; this includes the Hannibal Battalion, led by Major Hannibal. These named units can also be used within units that are not named after their commanding officers, such as the Werewolf Battalion led by Beatrix Brehme, having within it the Borkwalde squadron, led by Lieutenant Borkwalde. With their induction into the European Union force structure, the men and material of the NVA have been organized into the East German Force 2nd Tactical Armoured Force, under EU command, and have actively participated in frontline operations.[4] As well, in recent times, a number of NVA personnel have turned to mercenary activities as a means of supporting their nation and countrymen.

The Ministry of State Security, also known by the shorthand word Stasi (gained from Staatssicherheit) is the official state security force of the German Democratic Republic, and is responsible for ensuring and enforcing the laws of the nation, up to, and including spies, pro-Western dissidents, and anti-government citizens. To that end, the Stasi built a large-scale intelligence network comprised of informers in East Germany; it was said that one out of ten people in East Germany provided information to the Stasi, to the extent where the Stasi knew everything about their potential targets, including their personal life affairs. With the onset of the BETA War, the Stasi obtained permission to raise their own TSF units in order to maintain the ability to provide state security on the front lines and compete with the likes of the NVA. As the military arm of the Stasi, these units acted against political dissenters and deserters in the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) more often than they sortied against the BETA.

666th Schwarzesmarken TSF Squadron

666th Schwarzesmarken.

The GDR's 666th TSF Squadron Schwarzesmarken are a special forces unit of the NVA's Special Composite Air Group Hannibal stationed at Cottbus Base, deployed in the defence of the Oder-Neisse line. Operating mostly MiG-21s and an MiG-21PF assigned to their commander, Captain Irisdina Bernhard, they are often deployed as Lux and Magnus Lux interdictors; their mission is laserjagd, meaning "laser hunt" in German. The eradication of the BETA's laser strains is important to the NVA as a whole; the loss of laser cover means that the BETA can be easily eradicated with artillery and aerial bomber cover, and the 666th often has to race against time even as the fortifications of the Oder-Neisse line wear down with every assault.
As such, the 666th give their main orders the topmost priority; it is common practice for them to ignore allied distress calls that will result in deviation from their original mission, even if only for a short moment. Such actions have earned them many unflattering nicknames amongst the troops of the NVA. In the aftermath of Operation St Ursula, Theodor Eberbach was made the commander of the 666th after it was officially reconstituted under the new East German government. Anett remained his subordinate as the both of them worked toward Irisdina's ideal for a powerful and safe East Germany, fighting on the front lines against the BETA throughout Europe's slow withdrawal from the mainland.

Werewolf Battalion.

The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit's 101st Werewolf Battalion was an East German TSF group led by Major Beatrix Brehme, a seemingly staunch Soviet loyalist and an integral part of the Stasi's Moscow Sect, and was tasked with enforcing state security on the front lines. At times they would cooperate with the NVA to undergo defensive operations against the BETA, but the paramilitary force had its own command structure and ultimately answered to Erich Schmidt rather than the NVA, often times ignoring their requests for help in order to suit the ministry's personal goals. Their primary task, however, was to hunt down political dissenters and military deserters, and they maintained an edge over their Army counterparts with newer equipment, including the MiG-23 Cheburashka, and later, the MiG-27 Aligatori. Many member in this battalion had a dirty history and it was forbidden to talk about anyone's past experience. Lise had discovered that there were many criminals like deserters and murderers in the battalion.

European Union

European Union.

The European Union is a supranational union of various European states. As a unifying force on the European continent, the European Union, called in short the EU. The origins of the EU first started off as the European Community, at that time a loose alliance of West European nations. When the BETA were discovered, and the threat they posed revealed by the speed of their advance, the European Community was expanded into the European Union, a decision made on the assumption that a unified front would allow them to better resist the impending invasion.
Initially a military alliance, the EU's system was modified to become a quasi-federal system when the devastation caused by the BETA War continued to increase.[1] The solidification of the European Union into a political entity of its own right allowed the continental evacuation and refugee movement of Europe in the '80s to proceed smoothly, compared to that of Asia's,[1] and also made it easier to direct forces in the defence of the European continent. After the retreat of the Soviets resulted in the loss of their influence on the Eastern European countries that were part of the Warsaw Pact, the remaining nations formed the Eastern European Socialist Alliance. With their fall after the BETA overran large portions of Eastern Europe, the EU also took them in and integrated them into their forces.[2] This action was extended to other non-EU member nations as well, such as Switzerland.
Despite their efforts, and the extensive use of river areas as defence lines, the nations of the EU were unable to stem the tide;[4] following the fall of the Oder-Neisse Defense Line, and subsequently Berlin, in 1983, the BETA continued their push towards the western shores of Europe, expanding northwards via the Alps, through Belgium, towards the English Channel and the United Kingdom, as well as southwards, into the Iberian Peninsula, where Spain and Portugal were located at. The EU faced its largest threat in 1985 with a series of major events, including the Defence of Paris, the Retreat from Dunkirk, culminating in the Defence of Britain, when the BETA attempted large-scale invasion of the England landmass, destroying much of England's southern coasts. Moving all the way inland into southern London, it took six months of fierce fighting to finally dislodge the BETA from their foothold on the English Channel.
The attack was repelled by all nations of the EU and the US military, but the loss in manpower and equipment was almost too crippling to bear for the European nations; were the BETA to follow through with a second strike of that magnitude again, the European Union Force would be unable to stop them. In order to begin a long-term plan to rebuilt their military forces, the EU nations adopted the strategy of "culling operations", making incursions into BETA-held territory to reduce their numbers, in the hopes of delaying an assault or softening an incoming incursion so as to deal with it more easily, and allow the EU to regain its fighting strength.
In addition, a strategic withdrawal of the EU's fighting strength from the Scandinavian Peninsula and the Italian Peninsula to the Mediterranean Sea and the United Kingdom was carried out in 1994, and their forces were massed at coastal areas; both to prevent a transoceanic BETA invasion of their bases around the European continent, and to prepare for the joint recapture of the European mainland in the near future. Unlike the USA, the European Union supports the continued development of TSFs, and takes a clear anti-usage stance on non-conventional technology; examples include the espers of Alternative III, and the usage of certain types of G-Element-derived weaponry against the BETA. The European Union Force is heavily involved on the Western Defence Line, and frequently carries out culling operations near the English Channel, and around Sicily and the Straits of Gibraltar to prevent the BETA from invading Africa.
Currently engaged in a long-term siege with BETA forces on mainland Italy, the Italian armed forces defend the last bastion of their nation, Sicily, from Messina Base. A member nation of the European Union, Spain operates the EF-2000, with the Spike Shield being one of their domestic weapons designs. Like West Germany and France, the Spaniards have lost their entire country to the BETA invasion. A union of three European nations; Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, the organization also combines the military forces of all three nations, although it is not clear to what extent it does so.
The Netherlands, in particular, was involved in a major holding operation in the Zuiderzee, a shallow bay of the North Sea in the northwest of the Netherlands. The area was later manually flooded to block off the BETA, turning it into a saltwater region; as of 1995, the entire region was in the process of becoming a gigantic salt plain due to geographical changes caused by the BETA, as well as the cessation of fresh river water flowing into the Zuiderzee from the regions within Europe.

European Union Organization

Following the loss of European landmass to the BETA, most of the governments and social services of the European nations have been relocated to other locations around the world. The Federal Republic of Germany and Democratic German Republic have their governments housed in Central America, South America, and South Africa;[6] other nations of the European Union have stationed most of their key facilities in Greenland. While each nation of the EU retains its own military force, anti-BETA operations often involve armies from different countries, necessitating a unified command. Although ostensibly part of the United Nations, soldiers under the command of the European Union wear the badge of the European Union Force.
Dominated by the British, West German, and French armies, as of the year 2000 it is primarily based in Great Britain due to the loss of the European mainland to the BETA, with its headquarters in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and apart from their normal operations, are also involved with refugee support activities with the UN and USA.[1] The EU Force also works closely with non-member nations, such as the military forces of Switzerland and Turkey, and with the Scandinavian nations' efforts in TSF development, in their efforts to keep the BETA contained, and to one day reclaim the European continent. The current emblem, introduced in 1980, has 12 stars not to symbolize signatory countries, but rather the "perfection and completeness" of the European region.

European Union Armed Forces

European Union Force.

The European Union's armed forces consist of the militaries of each nation in the Union. Inter-nation joint operations are given great emphasis, and deployment rates are high due to regular BETA-culling operations as part of the the European Union's long-term plan to retake the continent. Forward bases have also been constructed on the various islands in the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea, to help enforce the continental blockade against the BETA. The European Union Force also operates alongside the Second Marine Expeditionary Force of the US Navy/US Marine Corps in combat operations, and the personnel of both forces have built up a great degree of respect for each other throughout the years.
The Deutsch-Französische Brigade is one such example of the joint-operation nature of the European Union, and uses troops from both Germany and France in strike operations against the BETA.[7] Formed in 1992 as a joint-force effort to avoid the politics present during Operation Palaiologos, the current Deutsch-Französische Brigade is staffed by the permanent presence of a Lorraine Regiment, representing Germany, and an Alsace Regiment, representing French. The entire unit is under the command of the EU, and answers only to the European Union Force. While the numbers and force organization in the Brigade may fluctuate and change, it retains its designation of Brigade out of respect for its founder. The names of the permanent regiments under its command take from the territory of Alsace-Lorraine.<br. Also known as West Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany is a democratic nation, in contrast to their communist counterpart, East Germany. After the fall of Berlin in 1983, their armed forces, the Bundeswehr, were integrated into the European Union, and the United Nations Force European Region Army command as the West German 1st Tactical Armoured Force. In recent times, both East and West Germany are in an alliance similar to that of the Unified Front of China.
The Federal Republic of Germany's situation applies to the French as well, although their integration into UN command is not as extensive. Having lost their nation, French armed forces commonly operate in the West Europe region and at the Suez Canal helping to hold the African Defence Line. But it is possible that this country will survive independently and keep its great power status thanks to its different overseas regions and departments such as French Guyana, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Réunion and New Caledonia, Polynesia Mayotte which allows it to move most of its population and its strategic industries.
The French have a troubled history with the rest of Europe due to differing strategic views. They were opposed to the massive counteroffensive of Operation Palaiologos, believing that force preservation took precedence over an offensive push that put the entire European continent at stake,[7] and pulled out of the ECTSF program due to disagreements concerning the usage of French-production engines in the EF-2000's Jump Units. Currently, both the French and West German armies also provide troops for the Deutsch-Franzosische Brigade, a joint-operation force organized by both countries.
As the last remaining intact nation of the European Union, the UK serves as the headquarters of the armed forces of the EU, UN, and US troops stationed on the Euro Front. Having bore the brunt of the fighting in the 1985 Defence of Britain, the UK has realized both the importance of a unified front, as well as proper modern weapons and tactics.[10] To date, the UK is one of the more well-equipped forces of the EU, with a matching navy force that's touted as second only to the US Navy. The UK currently operates both the EF-2000 Typhoon and F-5E Tornado ADV in frontline combat, and the older F-4 Phantom, bought from the USA as surplus units, for training and defensive troops.

13th Tactical Dragoon Regiment.

The 51st Tactical Armor Battalion Huckebein is a TSF unit part of the Federal Republic of Germany's Bundeswehr. They participated in numerous UN-sponsored BETA culling operations in conjunction with the East German Volksarmee in the 1980's, and many of its members developed a friendly rivalry and comradeship with members of the 666th Squadron after fighting together during Operation Neptune. The battalion made use of the modified F-5G Freedom Fighter, for use in their fast precision strikes that were designed to minimize the losses of their pilots by maintaining a safe distance from the BETA. As part of the West's strategy, the 51st maintained an artillery recon unit that could deploy target markers inside the BETA herd, used to give accurate coordinates despite the interference from heavy metal clouds.
Participated in Operation Neptune, a major diversionary attack designed as a BETA culling operation for the former territory of Poland.

The Federal Republic of Germany Army's 44th Tactical Armor Battalion Zerberus is a special-forces TSF unit of the United Nations' 1st Army operating on the European front. They are based at Dover Base, located in the vicinity of the rebuilt and restored Dover Castle after the successful 1985 Defence of Britain. A large number of their members have ties to nobility, and the culture of the 44th is that of noblesse oblige; the powerful have the duty to protect those under them, and the pilots of the 44th Zerberus place honor, discipline, and chivalry above all else.
Named after the watchdog of Hell, the three heads of the Zerberus represents the past, present, and future; metaphors for the 44th Zerberus' highest given duty by the European Union to safeguard the English Channel against further BETA incursions since their establishment in Dover Base. As the frontline to one of the main vectors of the BETA advance from Europe, the 44th Zerberus stand ever-ready with their skills, lives, and honor to defend the last bastion of the European Union. As a unit of the Bundeswehr, the 44th's latest TSF is the state-of-the-art EF-2000 Typhoon.

Rain Dancers Squadron

Rain Dancers Squadron.

The Rain Dancers are a unit put together for the main purpose of testing the ESFP, the pre-production variant of the EF-2000 Typhoon. In order to garner the support of the European Union for the EF-2000 and prevent its loss to the F-15 Eagle, the United Kingdom and Euro Fightas, the EF-2000's manufacturer, put together the Rain Dancers and pressed them into service as a United Nations special forces squadron in order to prove the worth of the ESFP in live combat action. For reasons unknown, the members of the Rain Dancers were selected under the same criteria as those of the UN's Special Task Force A-01.
The Rain Dancers operate from the HMS Duke of Edinburgh and HMS Ark Royal, UK carriers provided to them as part and parcel of their decisive mission. Their area of operations range from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, and even the Suez Canal, when the situation calls for them. The combat data that the Rain Dancers gathered and the ESFP's performance on the battlefields eventually helped the European Union to decide on the EF-2000 as its next-generation TSF, edging out the F-15 Eagle, as a primary TSF, from the European market. As of 2001, many of the Rain Dancers are still in the European Union as pilot instructors for the EF-2000. In combat, the Rain Dancers operate ESFPs and Tornado ADVs, despite theoretical disadvantages regarding mixed-type formations. The ESFPs usually engage in frontline combat, and are supported by Tornado ADVs from behind.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) (Russian: Союз Советских Социалистических Республик, СССР), known in short as the Soviet Union. Is a socialist state formed by various smaller nations in central and eastern Europe. The largest known communist supernation by far in the world of Muv-Luv Unlimited/Alternative, the Soviets are generally regarded as second in position only to the United States of America. Much of the Soviets' history remains the same until the end days of World War II, where the Soviets and the United States entered the Cold War almost immediately after the Axis Powers surrendered. Nearly two decades of neck-to-neck competition with the USA and its European Union allies soon followed, but eventually the Soviets lost the race as the most technologically-advanced nation on Earth, although they were not far behind by any means. Eventually, Soviet space technology focused on the development of unmanned probes and low-orbit deployment technologies.
While the Soviets were not directly involved in the Lunar War against the BETA, they submitted a proposal that suggested using espers to tap directly into the minds of the BETA. With the lack of results from Alternative I and II, approval was given by the United Nations, and in 1968 the Soviet Academy of Sciences, sponsored by the UN, began their research. When the BETA first arrived on Earth in 1973, the Soviets were the second to encounter the BETA in a full-blown land war at Kashgar after the then-communist Chinese military requested their aid in containing the rapidly-spreading threat; the sudden appearance of Laser-class specimens in an anti-air role had caught the human attackers completely off-guard. Despite the combined might of two of the largest nations on Earth, the loss of air power sealed the fates of the Soviet and Chinese armies. What followed after was a rapid campaign of area denial as the Soviets and Chinese withdrew their forces back to their respective nations, using nuclear weapons on the land in the hopes that the destruction of resources would force the BETA to slow down, and the Soviets' previous plan of utilizing espers is put into motion as the next Alternative Plan, Alternative III.
The BETA advance soon brought it to the doorstep of the Soviet Union, and in 1975 the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was invaded, and the Ural Hive (Objective 3) was established. Faced with an enemy that the frontline troops could not stop, the Soviet Union capital was relocated to Khabarovsk, and the evacuation of major domestic and defence industries away from the front was put into motion. The situation continued to worsen with the fall of Moscow and the construction of the Minsk Hive (Objective 5), in the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1976. The establishment of the Minsk Hive meant that the Soviets were cut off from the eastern European nations that were part of the Soviet Union as well, essentially isolating the main Soviet Union and dividing the war into two fronts. Despite their massive commitment to Operation Palaiologos, the Soviets' failure to secure the Minsk Hive and the subsequent BETA counterattack secured their defeat on the Eurasian front, and in the following years the Soviets were more concerned about their own territory eastbound than their allies in the west, who were facing equally bleak situations if not worse.
Their forced retreat throughout the years eventually ended at their current location, the Kamchatka Peninsula. While still committed to holding the front, the Soviets had lost too much territory to be able to effectively sustain both their defences and their industries; troops were being relocated as far out as the Wrangel Islands due to a lack of holding space, and that exacerbated the difficulty of maintaining a defence line. To solve their space issues, the Soviets proposed a purchase of Alaska from the United States. The United States refused an outright sale, but eventually agreed to a leasing of a portion of Alaska to their control by the USA, and the two former rival nations now share an uneasy truce on the same continent, with Soviet troops holding the defence line on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Throughout the war against the BETA, the Soviet government had been faced with the increasing problem of mutiny concerning non-Russian Soviets displaced from their nations and drafted into the Soviet forces; such was the fear of the BETA that it surpassed the draconian grasp of the Soviet government.[1] In response, the Soviet military approached the issue with the goal of suppressing all divides formed by national borders and racial groups, separating children from their parents at a young age and training them in military institutes to place their sense of belonging in the unit they were operating with, rather than the origins of their people.
The tactic was only moderately successful, however; the next generation of soldiers were willing to die for their comrades, who were often of the same ethnicity as them; without a family to nurture them, they had turned towards people of the same race as them as a natural response. However, they still held no loyalty to the Soviet government;[1] as well, with regards to ethnic Russians, Soviets of other nationalities still resent them for the biased treatment non-Russian Soviets had received compared to ethnic Russians. With most Russian Soviets are stationed in the rear lines or in Alaska, the majority of frontline troops are Soviets of non-Russian lineage; this has strained the social relationships between the Russians and Soviets of other nationalities, as apart from having to deal with the loss of their countries, the other races feel that they are being used as cannon fodder. An example would be in 2001, when Soviet leaders ordered the destruction of the 211 Batal'on Zhar (a unit almost entirely comprised of non-Russians) to cover up their attempt to steal the EML-99X Electromagnetic Induction Launcher.
As of 2001, the Soviet Union consists of their area in Alaska, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Chukchi Peninsula, and the various small islands offshore mainland Russia, the Wrangel Islands being one of their more fortified locations.

USSR Organization

The Soviet Union uses a socialist party system, run by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The organization is Russian in origin, uniting the governments of the various smaller states that form the Soviet Union alongside Russia. In order to solidify their hold, the Communist Party has made it so that it is the only legal political entity recognized by the laws of the Soviet Union. The system practices a greater control of information and enforcement of national policies than nations of the European Union and the United States, with great emphasis placed on the greater good of the nation as a whole at the expense of individuals. Political maneuvering is rife within the more ambitious members of both the military and the government.
The leader of the party, the Executive Chairman, also has authority as the Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Armed Forces. As such, the Communist Party has a substantial amount of influence in the Soviet Armed Forces as opposed to the relatively distinct relationships shared by the governments and military forces of democratic nations, and has even established political departments in the various branches of the armed forces to monitor them. Military issues are dealt with by a committee chaired by the Defence Minister, with its attendants being the Chief of Staff of the military and the various generals of the armed forces.
The Ministerstvo Vnutrennikh Del (known in Russian as the Министерство внутренних дел, or МВД) is the Soviet interior ministry, and are responsible for the enforcing domestic security and other internal matters of the Soviet Union with their own internal security forces. Most of their attention is thus focused on the Kamchatka Peninsula, where most of the non-Russian Soviets are stationed. Commonly referred to as the KGB (shorthand for Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the Committee for State Security is responsible for internal state security, and operates primarily in Alaska to safeguard the country and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. They are closely tied with the MVD, complete with their own national military force, and the two organizations together are said to be equal to the Soviet Armed Forces.

USSR Armed Forces

Soviet Armed Forces.

As of 2001, most of the assets of the Soviet Armed Forces are concentrated on the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Chukchi Peninsula, and the Wrangel Islands. The means by which the Soviet leadership suppressed the problem of dissent from non-Russians has resulted in many modern-day military units being largely comprised of personnel from a single ethnicity. As with many other frontline nations, the Soviet Air Force has been disbanded and elements incorporated into other branches. Extreme high-altitude aircraft without ground-attack capabilities have been assigned into the Soviet Space Force, while medium to low-height aircraft, especially those with ground attack capabilities and transports, have been incorporated into the Soviet Army.
The Soviet Army is the only military force in the world that holds the title of having the most experience in anti-BETA warfare, and is also the largest military force amongst the frontline nations. The Soviet Army can be split into two major armies; the Alaska Military District, operating in Alaska, and the Soviet Far East Military District, which operates on the Far East Defence Line. Because of the Soviet Army's strategic views on anti-BETA and Hive infiltration warfare, a majority of the TSFs operated by the Army emphasize on close-contact warfare capabilities.[2] The Soviet Army, which possesses its own research and development capabilities, promotes competition and development between its two main TSF suppliers, Sufoni and Mikoyam-Gulvich, in order to field the best TSF design available throughout the years; the rate of improvements in which Soviet TSF development has experienced is such that even designs that are not adopted into the armed forces often find second life as export products, earning the Soviet Union the reputation of the second-largest TSF exporter in the world. The Soviet Army has also developed its land forces significantly, with advanced battle tanks like the T-80 and the upgraded T-80UM-1 appearing on battlefields both local and overseas.
Split mainly into the Northern Fleet and the Pacific Fleet, the Soviet Navy's forces are relatively small compared to the United States Navy's, with an emphasis on battleships rather than TSF carriers.[4] More important to the war effort are the Navy's Akula-class nuclear submarines, which serve as vital supply transports to the European and Mediterranean defence lines; the Soviets have kept a tight lip on the exact number of Akula-class they have in their forces. The Soviet Navy occasionally cooperates with the Imperial Navy of the Empire of Japan during sea-to-shore culling operations at the Evensk, Cheorwon, and Sadogashima.
Soviet space technology improved by leaps and bounds during the brief but hotly-contested space race in-between them, and the United States and her European allies. The Soviet Aerospace Force has its own command structure and personnel, and fields a fleet of spaceships second only to the US Space Force's, complete with their own force of Orbital Divers; included in the roster of the Space Forces are the remainder of the Soviet Air Force's high-altitude, non-ground attack-capable aircraft. Unlike the all-ranging operations of the US Orbital Divers, the Soviet Orbital Divers are mostly focused on the Far East Defence Line; however, their budget, resources, maintenance, and equipment, are in danger of being neglected, as the Soviet Armed Forces shift their attention and resources to maintaining the Soviet Army.
The Spetsnaz was created sometime after World War II, but the founder of the Spetsnaz was Viktor Leonov who was a naval commando during the war. However, it is unknown how the Spetsnaz was created in Muv-Luv. A unit of the Spetsnaz was seen during the Yukon Base Incident and were fighting alongside their opposites the United States Army Delta Force against the RLF.

221 Batal'on Zhar.

The Far East Soviet Army's 3rd Army, 18th Division, 211th Tactical Armored Battalion Zhar (RUS: батальон Жар, JP: [ジャール] 大隊) is a frontline combat unit stationed at the Kamchatka Peninsula's ц-04 frontline base. The name is derived from the Russian жар, meaning heat or passion, which is represented with the image of a flame-wreathed sword gripped by an armored fist.
Most, if not all of the members are child conscripts from Warsaw Pact countries on the eastbound side of the BETA invasion and other regions of the Soviet Union who were forcibly pressed into service, rather than full-blooded Russians, or willing soldiers. This resulted in many of them bearing a sense of hatred towards anyone percieved to be an ethnic Russian, which some of them clearly demonstated when they encountered the Scarlet Sisters. The group verbally abused Cryska Barchenowa and threatened to physically humilate both of them, making clear their intention to "offer" her and Inia Sestina to some of the more morally-corrupted soldiers on the Kamchatka after threatening to strip them and tying them to a fence. The battalion operates both the Su-27SM Zhuravlik and the Su-37M2 Terminator in combat.

331st Special Experimental Development Squad

Idol Test Flight.

A Tactical Surface Fighter development unit, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics's 331st Special Experimental Development Squadron is a non-frontline unit tasked with the experimentation and development of non-conventional combat technology, hardware, and tactics. The parent unit of the 331st is the Soviet Army Central Development Corps. As a sub-unit of the Soviet Union's 331st Special Experimental Development Squadron, temporarily placed under the United Nations Force Operation Test and Evaluation Command at Yukon Base in Alaska, USA, one of Idol Test Flight's primary purposes is the evaluation of the Su-37UB Terminator as part of Project PROMINENCE. This unit is so far the only known component of the 331 to have had interaction with forces external to the Soviet Union, and is also heavily involved in the Espers program.
While there are four TSFs in the flight, only the Su-37UB Terminator of the Scarlet Twins make an appearance during official combat exercises. The two pilots known collectively as the Scarlet Twins are 2nd Lieutenants Cryska Barchenowa and Inia Sestina. The flight operates an Su-37UB, piloted by the Scarlet Twins, and three Su-37M2s, operated by the remaining flight members. Idol-2 also operated a Su-27,[1] sometime before the Ц-04 Frontline Supply Base Incident. Although flight commander Jerzy Sandek is an experienced and accomplished pilot, he does not partake in piloting duties unless in special cases.

United Front of China

The Unified Front of China (統一中華戦線) represents the combined military forces of communist China, the People's Republic of China (PRC), and Taiwan, the Republic of China (ROC). The UFC's headquarters are located on Taiwan. Later in future, this Unified Front was dissolved. Unlike the United States of America or the Soviet Union, the PRC remained in the background of the world history at the height of the Cold War and the subsequent Lunar War against the BETA. It was only when the BETA made landfall in the west of China, Kashgar in 1973 that the PRC took center-stage as the first nation to encounter the BETA on Earth.
Despite the numbers of the PRC's People's Liberation Army, they were unable to hold back the BETA advance due to the sudden introduction of the Laser-class BETA. Their only saving grace was the BETA's almost single-minded push into Eurasia early on in the war; even the combined might of the Soviet and Chinese armies, along with Korean and Vietnamese volunteer forces, could not keep the frontline safe from the BETA advance for long. In the later part of the 1980s, the Soviets, despite maintaining relations with the PRC, finally withdrew their forces from Chinese territory, and by the mid-1990s the BETA had driven the PRC itself off the Asian mainland.
While PRC leadership was initially reluctant to entertain the notion of an alliance with Taiwan, the Republic of China, the total retreat of Soviet forces from Chinese frontlines essentially forced their hand. Negotiations were numerous and difficult, but the PRC finally managed to establish a military and economic aid alliance with Taiwan, which expressed acceptance of the PRC's communist government in 1987, resulting the two nations pooling their resources and forming the UFC in order to continue their war against the BETA.
Despite their alliance, both nations were initially separated from each other in almost all affairs, with a chain of command independent of both nations' military. While officially announced as a means to prevent confusion between the usage of eastern and western weapons systems, the separation was intended as, and initially used as a buffer by the PRC to prevent a gradual integration with the Taiwanese government. However, with rumors of the completion of a G-Bomb by the United States in 1990, the UFC began to place renewed interest in the recapture of the Chinese mainland. For the first time in the UFC's history, a joint technology exchange was initiated, and the two allied nations began working closely with each other.Unlike the United States of America or the Soviet Union, the PRC remained in the background of the world history at the height of the Cold War and the subsequent Lunar War against the BETA. United Front of China Armed Forces

United Front of China Army.

Because of their armed forces' location at Taiwan, anti-BETA operations often include having to fly over water bodies to strike at the enemy located on the mainland. Due to this the UFC operates an unusual mix of Chinese-produced and Soviet-inspired TSFs, specialized for Hive operations, alongside US-licensed TSFs meant for operation over water. It is unknown the degree to which the two armies are integrated; however, Lieutenant Cui Yifei, a Taiwanese native, serves as the leader of the Bao-Feng Test Flight, whose purpose is to test improved PRC technology. The People's Republic of China, the PRC, is now a nation that has lost the majority of its territory. It is unknown how their foreign assets, if any at all, are structured.
The Republic of China, the ROC, or more commonly known as Taiwan, is the homeland of the Taiwanese people, and also currently functions as the headquarters of the UFC. Known in short as the ROC Army, they operate US TSFs such as the F-16 and F-18, alongside their own locally-produced F-CK-1. The success of the PRC's adoption of the High-Low Mix, with the J-10 and J-11, is also having an influence on the ROC's selection of their next-generation TSF.

Because of the PRC's exile from the mainland and their military's proximity to BETA forces, Bao-Feng Test Flight has had a history of testing close-combat equipment and tactics.

United States of America

The United States of America.

The United States of America is a federal constitutional republic located in central North America. Currently the most powerful nation in the world, the USA is one of a handful of nations that remain out of immediate threat from the BETA advance. Nevertheless, their technology remains one of the most advanced, and their military is reputed to be one of the, if not the strongest fighting force in the world, with their resources and fighting personnel spread out across several battlefronts around the world.
With the end of World War II, attention in the USA quickly shifted from the Axis Powers to a new threat; their former ally, Soviet Russia. With the Cold War quickly escalating, the USA quickly gathered other nations as allies, and within short order jointly spearheaded a space race with the European nations. Aiming to become the most technologically advanced nation on the planet, the USA pioneered many technologies in this time that would later become standard on both the battlefield and in logistic purposes, and the first unmanned spaceflight to Mars in 1958 was done by a US spacecraft, the Viking I. Throughout the years, they would also be involved in local conflicts in Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Following the initial excitement and the horror that soon followed when the unknown organisms found by the Viking I turned out to be the BETA, the USA quickly focused their research on developing weapons and systems that would even the playing ground for United Nations troops stationed in space. The Feedback Protector, NCAF, and other space-use military weapons were all developed by the USA. Despite the quick response, the lunar forces were unable to prevent the BETA from overrunning most of their facilities. With the threat of the BETA landing on Earth becoming a possible reality, the USA re-purposed their research in the NCAF into developing an Earthbound variant, the NCSF. This marked an important milestone, with the NCSF eventually becoming the F-4 Phantom, and the base from which subsequent TSF development began.
While the USA remained on the cutting-edge of TSF development and created many of the weapon systems that would later become standard on all TSFs, the nation as a whole had been spared the crippling attrition warfare that other nations had to face against the BETA. US command decision to bombard the second BETA Hive landing at Athabasca, Canada, spared the North American continent from suffering the same fate as Europe and Asia, allowing them to retain a strong industrial and technological base from which to strengthen their forces. Despite the USA's massive contributions to the war, the policies set by the government are sometimes reluctantly accepted by other nations, especially those on the frontlines. Political maneuvering and prioritizing of self-interest at the cost of others have earned the USA no small amount of ire from other nations, and the US Armed Forces are sometimes liable to use force as a deal-breaker when they require things to go their way, further souring relationships with other nations.
Preparations were also made in the event of the BETA landing on US soil. Should more than a predetermined amount of BETA manage to get through Alaska's defense line via crossing the Bering Sea in the event of the Soviets' defeat on the Eurasian front, a series of hydrogen bombs would be set off to separate most of Alaska from mainland America, allowing US forces to regroup around this new defense line. The status of this plan after the US leased half of Alaska to the Soviets remains unknown, due to the Soviet presence essentially acting as a shield against the BETA.
With the development of the G-Bomb, part of the US government decided against cooperating with the Alternative Plans of the United Nations, and in 1998 started to push for Hive capture operations centering around G-Bomb usage. Skeptics of the plan remained strong until G-Bomb deployment in Operation Lucifer, where the power of two such weapons allowed friendly forces to take the Yokohama Hive with relative ease. As of 2001, the USA remains the strongest force on the planet, spearheading the development of stronger weapons, vehicles, and TSFs; some have called the United States the "Armory of the World".[1] US troops stationed on the frontlines continue to fight alongside local forces even as the US military leadership explores radical strategies aimed at bringing the BETA threat to heel, and at the same time leaving them a world situation with the US at the top.
n Alternative, factions in the US supporting Alternative V began to push for the acceptance of their plan, even as Alternative IV was still in progress (though the existence of factions which supported Alternative IV were confirmed as well). CIA elements were known to have a hand in events like the 12/5 Incident, and the pro-Alternative V faction gained a significant amount of political clout before the success of Alternative IV, during Operation 21st, severely undermined their efforts. During Operation Cherry Blossom, US Space Command contributed a significant number of forces to the raid on the Kashgar Hive, taking heavy losses in the attempt. Elements of the Unites States Armed forces later took part in Operation Sledgehammer, providing most of the forces in the operation and artillery cover for all forces present.

United States Organization

The civilian government of the United States is a constitutional republic and a representative democracy, formed out of a federation of fifty states. The President of the United States is the highest civilian position in the country; in times of war he is advised by the Joint Chief of Staff of the US Armed Forces, who is usually the most senior military personnel appointed to that position. Policies towards foreigners and refugees remain controversial. Despite providing substantial aid to foreign refugees from Europe and elsewhere, uncontrollable events such as corruption in the nations hosting said refugee camps and the US' pragmatic view of post-BETA national policies paint a less-than-friendly light over the United States. While the US Armed Forces does accept foreign troops in the armed forces, they are usually drawn from the refugee camps with promises of citizenship.

The Central Intelligence Agency, also known as the CIA, it is a civilian-based independent executive intelligence agency within the US Federal government. Their involvement in the war against the BETA, especially the Alternative Plans, is suspected to be near-total, and their influence is far-reaching enough to affect even military units in the US Armed Forces. The jurisdiction of the US Armed Forces falls under the Department of Defense, and are further split into the Department of the Army, Department of the Navy and the Department of the Air Force. In addition, there is a Unified Combat Command, a department whereby troops of different branches fight together for the purpose of combined arms operations, under a single commanding body. Unlike the conventional Army/Navy/Air Force/Space Force, the UCC is split according to their region(s) of operation and purpose.

United States Armed Forces

The US Armed Forces can be split into six main branches: the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and the Space Corps, which was formed in 1946, shortly after the end of World War II. The Coast Guard was initially under the Department of Transportation, but following the war against the BETA, has been placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Navy. This placing, as of 2001, is still in effect. Actual overall command of the US Armed Forces' various units operating around the world are placed under the Unified Combatant Command, which is further broken up into various commands, each in charge of a specific region of the world. As befitting their multi-branch nature with regards to their force organization, the UCC answers to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, comprised of the Military Service Chiefs of each US Armed Forces branch, and a leading body of personnel, who in turn answer to the Department of Defense.
The primary military branch of the United States Armed Forces, the US Army, with a TSF count amounting to 70% of all units in the US Armed Forces,[4] is a top-of-the-line military force with well-trained soldiers, equipped with the latest the nation has to offer, and the largest of all the military branches in the US, and in the world. US Army units are static, and are often garrisoned in frontline bases to not only provide backup for local forces, but also to keep an eye out for foreign dissidents that are threatening to sabotage US interests.
While many nations have given up or absorbed their air forces into other branches of the military, the US retains an air force out of a need for a centralized control structure for their various air transport groups and bomber squadrons. With over 200 strategic bomber craft under its command, the USAF wields considerable power, and it helps that the USA is far removed from the main battlefield half a planet away, making the threat from Laser-class BETA much less prominent. Currently, a significant number of their bomber aircraft are focused on monitoring the political instability present in South America with strategic patrol flights.
As the naval branch of the US Armed Forces, the Navy is the military branch with the largest coverage around the globe, using their wide range to encompass the entirety of the European and Asian continents. Despite a smaller budget, the USN has managed to maintain state-of-the-art warships and systems. The US Navy has the capability to support ground troops for as long as is required of them during an operation, with their firepower and TSF squadrons keeping up a constant barrage of support fire and precision strikes for allies fighting at the front. The Navy shares a close relationship with the US Coast Guard, which is in charge of local naval defense around the US, and the US Marine Corps, the Navy's definitive partner in sea-to-land combat operations.
A military branch under the Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps are the United States' main overseas expeditionary military branch, and are well-noted for their tenacity and first-strike capabilities in combat. To that end, they work closely with the US Navy in nearly all operations. The USMC also continues to field elements of Marine Force Recon as originally intended, albeit deploying in TSFs, to survey the battlespace before larger combat units arrive. The Marine Corps' role of being the vanguard in sea-to-land assaults has remained unchanged since their formation, and in the war against the BETA where failure means death, their willingness to repeatedly step onto the frontlines alongside foreign forces have earned them the respect of many.
Formed in 1946 after the end of World War II, the United States Space Corps's sole purpose is to represent US power in the endless frontier of space. Working closely with the UN Aerospace Force, its primary goals in modern times are orbital reconnaissance, bombardment, and the insertion and support of Orbital Divers. With intercontinental ballistic launch capabilities, a fleet of 160 spacecraft, and four divisions of TSFs from the US Army permanently assigned as Orbital Divers, the USSC is second only to the US Army in terms of budget and manpower.

66th Tactical Armored Battalion Hunter.

The United States Army's 65th Combat Training Battalion is a non-frontline unit based at Nellis Army Base, in Nevada. Upon the adoption of the F-22A Raptor, the 65th CTB was made the parent unit of the Infinities Special Combat Training Group, which was tasked with the creation of a stealth weapons combat manual. Prior to this, its F-15E Strike Eagle aggressor squadron became famous for being painted in Soviet Army colors, receiving the nickname Flankers.
The test flight was transferred in from the Nellis Base testing grounds, and operates four F-22A EMD Phase TSFs as performance evaluators and combat tactics developers for stealth units. They were sent to Yukon Base as participants of Project PROMINENCE and Blue Flag, easily defeating all opposition during the combat exercises. During the Yukon Base Incident, the Infinities were involved in a secret operation to destroy Soviet G-Bomb research sites. They later returned to Yukon Base to aid its defenders against the RLF and BETA forces assaulting the location.

414th Ghosts Platoon

The 414th "Ghosts" Platoon was a US Army research unit, designated as part of the CTRU Army Command organization. Their primary mission was the research and development of the F-22 Raptor during its initial testing phases, including the EMD Phase 2. They were succeeded in this mission by the 65th Combat Training Battalion, who pushed forward with the Raptor's latest combat trial requirements in late 2001. Beset early on by technical delays and other setbacks in the program, there were fears that the F-22 would be unable to go forward as America's next TSF without a serious redesign. This pressure translated upon the test pilots' shoulders, and inevitably led to the incident that would see the platoon be unofficially dissolved and its pilots split up.

United Nations

The United Nations.

The United Nations, or UN, is an international organization comprised of almost every nation that currently exists on Earth, and serves as a means of facilitating international cooperation between countries in almost all subjects and concerns. Their primary role is to serve as a common front where troops from various nations can cooperate on the battlefield, and to lead international efforts in the war against the BETA. The UN also coordinates humanitarian efforts for people displaced by the BETA threat, and has even spearheaded several military projects to improve the fighting strength of the world's militaries.
The United Nations was first formed following the end of World War II in Allied victory to allow various nations to work towards international cooperation. The UN's first major involvement in world events was when it formed the special duty research organization "Dignified 12" to facilitate cross-species communication efforts after the Viking I spacecraft landed at Mars and discovered extraterrestrial life. In 1966, the Dignified 12 were re-organized into the Alternative Plan (presumably what was to become Alternative I) to begin studying and understand the extraterrestrial life discovered by Viking I. At this time, the UN did not possess any military power of its own.
The earliest existence of a United Nations Armed Forces was during the 1967 BETA Invasion of Luna, when such a force was organized in order to face the BETA threat on the Moon, based on Article 43 of the United Nations Charter. When the BETA threat reached Earth in 1973, the UN Forces shifted their attention to creating a united front where humanity could strike back against the BETA. Following China and the Soviet Union's refusal for UN assistance, and the subsequent defeats suffered by mankind's forces against the BETA in Central Asia, the United Nations Joint Chiefs of Staff held a conference in 1979 in Vancouver to re-organize the UN Forces for greater strategic effectiveness. At that time, the only military power the United Nations had were in the form of borrowed troops from other nations; the UN could only direct overall mission command during a UN operation, and had no say over the finer details of managing a standing armed force. The 1979 UN Chief of Staff Conference's purpose, which eventually resulted in the Vancover Agreement, was to create a more cohesive armed effort to defeat the BETA.
Despite the Vancouver Agreement, the UN could still only borrow troops from other nations, which proved to be a time-consuming process when entire nations began to fall to the BETA. With the remnants of their governments and armed forces forced into exile, these homeless troops were quickly integrated into the small but growing United Nations Force as drafted by the UNCSC. It was hoped that the uniting of several military forces under a combined banner would help in preventing the BETA from advancing further than they already had, and prevent international politics from impeding the combined defensive effort.
Initially, permanent members of the UN Security Council included the United States, United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, and China. In 1987, Australia and the Empire of Japan joined as permanent members of the UN Security Council, but with their right of veto frozen for the next 20 years, thus bringing the total up to seven. Over the years, the UN has led many operations against the BETA with varying degrees of success. Two of their more prominent multinational efforts include the Alternative Plans and Project PROMINENCE. However, despite the consolidation of numerous national militaries into a single entity, the UN Armed Force are far from infallible. The logistics and organizational problems that come with running a large entity are accentuated many times when it comes to planning for a large operation, and like most armies, not all personnel in the UN are competent in what they are assigned to do.

United Nations Organization

UN Armed Forces Logo.

The United Nations is an international organization as opposed to a national entity. As such, the UN's decisions are decided by a council comprised of representatives from the nations that make up the entirety of the UN. While the United Nations does not posses its own armed forces, troops from other nations can be placed under its command. Depending on their mission, such a deployment can either last from days to decades on end. Under Chapter 7, Section 43 of the Charter of the United Nations, all member nations are obligated to provide troops to the United Nations in the war effort. Command of such assets are under the scope of the UN Security Council, which are advised by a Military Staff Committee comprised of the member states of the Council. Like any conventional armed forces, the UN arranges its military assets into air, sea, land, and (whenever possible) space forces.
The United Nations possess its own logistic branch, as well as research and development facilities; the various BETA research facilities underneath Yukon Base and Yokohama Base are examples, as are the Alternative Plans. Apart from frontline duty, UN troops are also deployed as peacekeepers in refugee zones, and the status of the world's refugees also falls under the UN's responsibilities. However, such security troops can only be deployed if the nation hosting the refugees so allows. The United States, United Kingdom and Taiwan do not allow the UN to deploy security troops in their nations, instead using their own military forces to enforce order.
The United Nations Armed Force has varying degrees of control over the personnel under them. The first is the deployment of at least an operational unit from a host nation's armed forces under the banner of the UN, following the historical methods of the UN "borrowing" troops from other nations to fulfill its objectives; because of these units also legally belong to their host country and can be called upon as such anytime, they often take the form of naval fleets for various logistics reasons.
Under such a command, the UN has overall control over these troops and can move them as required in combat operations, but otherwise has little say in the long-term prospects of said unit(s). Such units can be either on long-term loan (JA44 Zerberus Bataillon and the UN Pacific Fleet), or for the duration of just one operation (the Imperial Navy's 17th Tactical Armored Unit in Operation Sledgehammer). By 2001, virtually every nation has at one point or another loaned a unit to the UN.
Another command type the UN practices is a quasi-permanent authority. Personnel included under this plan, from soldiers to civilian attaches, still retain their nationality, but will only take orders from the United Nations and no other source. While equipment is provided by the providing/host country, they are given UN markings, UN identification codes and colors, and represent the UN when on the field. Included in this is the UN Aerospace Force, which has personnel on long-term standby that are replaced through duty rotation or reinforcements. Troops stationed on the defense lines under the UN, as well as those of the Alternative Plans, are also under this category.
The last type of command the UN has over its forces is a permanent command. Forces under this authority are bound to the UN and its rules of operation for as long as the UN requires, and can be deployed in any situation as the UN sees fit to do so, essentially acting as an independent force. Units under this command type are usually from small nations driven out of their homelands by the BETA; being the UN's sole independent assets, pilots of such units often find themselves deployed in more dangerous situations than their counterparts in other militaries due to UN decision to send them on more decisive missions. As a result, these nations feel that they are being made use of, and several have formed their own organization to counter this effect.

United Nations Armed Forces

UN Armed Forces Patches.

UN troops, regardless of their type of command under the UN, can be seen stationed on almost every front of the world where they often take part in combat operations alongside their host country. If the UF Forces were an actual standing military, their equipment would be the most varied on Earth, encompassing at least a generation of Soviet, United States, Japanese, and European equipment. The UN Force is a self-sufficient military, from logistics, supply transport via naval/aerial means, research and training to force allocation and other tertiary needs. For a comprehensive list of UN Force units hosted at various bases, refer to the United Nations Force Bases list.
The UN Aerospace Force is in charge of all UN space-based assets, the most well-known being the Orbital Divers, TSF pilots assigned to the dangerous task of assaulting a Hive by dropping through the atmosphere to reach ground zero. Also included in the Aerospace Force are the UN Orbital Fleet and Orbital Defence Fleet, the latter of which are in charge of operating both the nuclear-armed SHADOW satellite network and various reconnaissance satellites.

RLF

The Refugee Liberation Front, or RLF for short, is a terrorist organization whose goal is to improve living conditions for refugees that have escaped the BETA advance. The RLF's personnel roster is highly varied, ranging from refugees of southern Europe to non-Russian Soviets.
They accuse the United Nations and other non-frontline nations (with special emphasis on the United States of America) of money-laundering for weapons development, and prioritizing leaders and soldiers for supplies, citing the poor social conditions of refugee camps as evidence that not enough is being done to help those that were displaced by the BETA invasion. Their demands were for the elimination of corruption in the organizations responsible for those displaced by the war and for the refugees to gain protection and citizenship rights in their adopted countries so as to stop the violence, starvation, drug addiction, and forced conscription that is currently ongoing in the camps.
While their members are motivated and determined, and are adequate infantrymen, especially with the element of surprise on their side, they lack the precision and discipline of more organized armies. As TSF pilots, RLF personnel range from moderately skilled to poor; few if any of them have any formal military training as eishi. This placed them at a disadvantage when fighting against well-trained pilots, and the difference in skill was laid bare when they engaged the escaped pilots of Argos Test Flight, along with Lieutenant Cui Yifei and the Scarlet Twins (Inia and Cryska), as the RLF pilots were unused to anti-TSF combat tactics.

BETA War World Technology

Spaceward Hardwares for All-Round Defensive Ordnances and Warheads.

SHADOW: Standing for Spaceward Hardwares for All-Round Defensive Ordnances and Warheads, SHADOW is a networked system of three components; a lunar orbit surveillance network, an early-stage nuclear launch platform at Lagrange 1, and a final interception line made up of a group of nuclear attack satellites in Earth orbit. SHADOW satellites were built as part of a plan to prevent the further landing of Hive core units from lunar-based BETA Hives. So far, the SHADOW network has detected and deflected only one incoming object off-course; whether it was a Hive core unit or something else entirely remains a point of contention to this day. The SHADOW system is divided into two separate programs; ARTMISS & LID. The ARTMISS system is focused on the final interception line of Earth nuclear attack satellites controlled by OSP-1400, the command satellite. LID is the Lunar early detection and initial nuclear launch platform system for monitoring BETA activity on the Moon's surface.

ARTMISS System.

ARTMISS: The ARTMISS system handles the operation of all Earth nuclear defense satellites and is organized via NORAD and its associated command satellite, OSP-1400. The nuclear satellites are 300 km from the Earth, whereas OSP-1400 is 1400 km in distance from the planet. While the weapons are designed to target BETA landers and other foreign, hostile objects from space, as seen in The Day After the satellites can easily be aimed back toward the Earth in order to target surface positions. In order to reprogram and fire the weapons, however, both NORAD and OSP-1400 must send approval codes to reposition and recalibrate the firing mechanisms. This is done to ensure that any rogue elements that manage to infiltrate either the satellite or the command bunker will not be able to use the WMDs against humanity.
LID: The LID system handles all of the organized satellites and detection networks focused on observing the lunar surface and orbit for BETA activity. The primary defense satellite used for early interception is called Space One, and is the largest satellite in LID. For surveillance, there are at least three satellites in low orbit of the Moon at all times, with a fourth one sharing the same orbit as Space One that acts as the primary collector and transmitter of data.
FORMALHAUT: The Fomalhaut is a phase space transport catapult or "gate" that was developed by the Union of Mankind in the 2040s, after the BETA were eradicated from the Sol system. The culmination of extensive research of element G, the Fomalhaut is essentially a long-range jump catapult that can propel ships across interstellar and even intergalactic distances. Since it is a catapult, a corresponding unit does not need to be present at the destination of a jump for it to operate, but its modular design means ships can easily construct another catapult after jumping to enable return trips. Fomalhaut gates have security measures to prevent usage by unauthorized parties, and can self-destruct to deny access if necessary. Fomalhaut gates were constructed to facilitate the exploration of the universe, and are a key part of the Union's plan to find and establish contact with the Siliconians.
Moorcock-Lechte Drive: The Moorcock-Lechte Drive is a device that uses G Elements to produce energy and gravitational distortions, capable of levitating and moving an object such as in the XG-70b Susanoo II and XG-70d Susanoo IV, producing a Rutherford Field, and when overloaded results in a massive explosion, similar to a G Bomb but 20 times stronger. It was developed by Dr. Karls Moorcock and Dr. Ristomatti Lechte at Ros Alamos in 1979.
Rutherford Field: A gravitational field produced by a Moorcock-Lechte Engine. It utilizes gravitational distortions that be used as a shield capable of deflecting Laser-class lasers, and tearing apart anything physical that comes in contact with it, be it human, BETA, or TSF. Unfortunately, TSFs built with current technology are unable to utilize the field, due to the size of the Moorcock-Lechte Engine, and the equipment needed to produce and control a Rutherford Field. The scarcity of the G Elements required to power the Moorcock-Lechte Engine is also a limiting factor.

G-Technology

G-Elements: Special materials made by the BETA, presumably to be sent to the Creators, via launch from the center shaft of a BETA Hive. The technical name, Element Gray, is named after the guy who discovered it at the Ros Alamos National Lab, Doctor William Gray. There are probably at least 11 different types, based on some of Yuuko's lines. G-Elements have a tendency to appear as glowing blue material. G-Elements enable the creation and operation of advanced technology, and have a variety of unusual properties:

  • Gray 6 has negative mass.
  • Gray 9 is a room temperature superconductor, allowing for higher-grade technology like quantum computers, such as the 00 Unit in the Alternative IV plan
  • Gray 11 is used in the manufacture and function of Moorcock-Lechte Engines for equipping on HI-MAREF units, both to produce usable power and a gravity distorting Rutherford Field. By extension, Gray 11 is also used in the creation of the 5th Dimensional Effect explosive, the G-Bomb.
  • Possibly a faster-than-light propulsion system used in the Colony Ships of the Alternative V plan.
  • Creating a Causality Conductor.

There are many G-Element phenomenon observed with the BETA:

  • Creation of their Laser-class and Heavy Laser-class.
  • Used in BETA reactors, which are both power sources and their equivalent of a regional commander for local BETA groups.
  • The G-Elements in the walls of Hives might also be the source of hampered wireless communication, by absorbing certain electromagnetic wavelengths.

G-Bomb: A new type of strategic weapon that uses G-Element-derived technology to produce a 5th Dimensional Effect explosion. An overloaded Moorcock-Lechte Engine produces a similar, if on a much larger scale, explosion. It is likely that they operate on similar principles, as G-Bombs also generate their own Rutherford Field, allowing for orbital bombardment of Hives without risk of being intercepted by Laser-class and Heavy Laser-class BETA. G-Bombs are also known for rendering once-healthy land completely sterile, perhaps permanently. Their wider and more long lasting effects are relatively unknown, and thus the Yokohama Base serves as a test to see some of their residual effects on living things.
When a mass number of such bombs were deployed in Alternative V, side effects include, but were not limited to:

  • Intensification of the Dellinger Effect, such that the range of radio communication is severely reduced, and communication satellites rendered near-useless.
  • Creating huge salt deserts that surrounded and connected both North America and Australia.
  • Gravity anomalies in all height regions of the atmosphere/on the planet surface, causing pockets of vacuum, destruction of satellites via forced atmospheric re-entry, and the loss of the Eurasian/African/Asian continent due to being flooded by mega-tsunami phenomena.

Esper Technology

Most known espers were created in Alternative III, the Soviet Union-led Alternative Plan to artificially create espers in a breeding program. These espers were intended to communicate with the BETA in an attempt to understand them; the F-14AN3 Mindseeker is a specialized unit with sensors calibrated to improve the espers' abilities in an attempt to allow them to pick up any BETA mind processes in the vicinity. Most, if not all of the espers who participated in Operation Swaraj, the offensive against the Bhopal Hive, perished. Sixth generation Espers at least, like Trista Sestina, are the result of eugenics, genetic engineering, and artificial womb technology.
Despite the failure of Alternative III, the remaining espers are still important to the war effort against the BETA in various other ways. This is shown through the Soviet Union's continued use of Espers in both TSF R&D development and the continued expansion of the Total Eclipse plan under Jerzy Sandek. One esper was also requested by the new Alternative IV research team and they were considered integral to the plan's success. The Polnoye Zatmeniye Plan has espers as a major component to the Plan.
Esper abilities are split into two primary types; Reading and Projection.

  • Reading: The ability of an esper to perceive the thoughts of others as a mental image represented by colors. A core ability of all espers, Reading is intended to allow the espers to perceive what the leaders of Alternative III hoped were the wordless language of the BETA. However, the ability to Read differs from esper to esper, and an esper's proficiency at intepreting the presented mental images correctly depends on the esper's own social experiences. In Muv-Luv Alternative Chronicles Resurrection, it is revealed that a material known as hyper ceramic can shield a person's thoughts from an esper's reading ability.

The headgear found on all Alternative III espers are limiters designed to control the reading ability and prevent the Esper from being overwhelmed by too many thoughts at once. It also can act as a way to prevent the Esper from reading certain people, to ensure they cannot access sensitive information or disobey their superiors. Without said limiter, the range and the strength of their powers increase but at great physiological cost from mental strain.

  • Projection: The second primary ability of an esper is Projection. By projecting the thoughts of humankind in the same color-based imagery as the espers were designed to percieve thoughts, it was hoped that Projection combined with Reading would allow humans to communicate with the BETA. This ability can also be used on normal humans and other espers, although it is much harder for the former to understand the thoughts sent into their minds.
Nastroya Effect AKA Psycho-Field.

Prafka: A mysterious phenomenon that gives the Russian espers unmatched abilites during combat. With the use of this phenomenon, Inia Sestina and Cryska Barchenowa have earned their title of "Scarlet Twins". The Polnoye Zatmeniye Plan is focused on harnessing this effect in combat situations against BETA, and humans. The Prafka effect is categorized by a percentage ratio based on the activity's "strength", along with a Level designation. The link between espers can be measured within a decimal point of time delay between their synchronized actions, but requires an adjustment tank to accurately diagnose and fix. A catalyst can be used to induce Prafka, or enter the Esper into a mindset that makes it easier for Prafka to be activated. These catalysts often have a deep emotional connection with the Esper. Yuuya Bridges acted as Cryska and Inia's catalyst. Related somehow is the Nastroyka Effect.
During this, Inia and Cryska are observed to speak in perfect unison and talk like one person. It allows Espers to "synchronize" with one another, their bodies moving in unison and combining their heightened senses into one. Prafka, put simply, greatly increases the effectiveness of an Esper-piloted TSF to superhuman levels for the time it is activated, and as long as it is maintained at a stable level. The Prafka effect is put to use effectively in TSFs designed to take advantage of the Espers and their psychic abilities, such as the Su-47E variant which is designed to house an esper control pod and allows the pod to control the TSF without need of the control joysticks or pedals. These pods contain Espers that can link with one another through Prafka, allowing their TSFs to move in tandem and increase their combat effectiveness. This method has even been shown to allow a capable 3rd Generation TSF, the Su-47E Berkut, to dodge Laser-class beams: a feat once thought impossible.
Espers, however, have also been shown to be incredibly sensitive to the effect and how it is induced. For example, Inia Sestina, a particularly gifted Esper that had developed a catalyst in Yuuya Bridges, was shown twice to be overwhelmed with fear and pain when either targeted, or in the presence of, an Esper control pod that had artificially induced the Prafka effect, where in one instance she was knocked unconscious while in the midst of piloting a TSF. In addition, Esper control pods remain sensitive to overuse or mental proximity to other Espers, as shown when the same pod that overwhelmed Inia Sestina lost control of itself, losing its Nastroyka effect as well as its control over the slaved TSFs. The pod's mental strength, as well as the lasting Nastroyka effect, was enough to literally tear the normal human pilot in the TSF's second seat to shreds.

Nastroyka Effect: An Esper-related phenomenon which is closely related to Prafka. Its appearance is easily recognizable as a cloud of psychic energy will gather around the TSF that is piloted by the Esper who is giving off the effect. The Nastroyka effect appears when an Esper's prafka levels and psychic energy has reached their zenith, and is a physical manifestation of this unnatural level of power. The natural color for the Nastroyka effect is blue, but has also been observed in other colors like red. Esper control pods can create the Nastroyka effect, as the Espers inside are still alive and aware. Because of the artificial process of inducing Prafka, however, the Nastroyka effect of a pod is a reddish hue, rather than the natural blue. This effect will also surround any TSFs slaved to the Esper's machine. These TSFs must specifically be those that are controlled via psychic link rather than through the use of traditional OS systems.

Esper Control Pod.

Esper Control Pods: First seen in the Total Eclipse anime, the Esper Control Pod is the device used by mercenary/Allegiance/Refugee Liberation Front member Christopher, featured in novel and anime versions of Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse. He uses the device hoping to take psychic control over the espers of Soviet Idol test flight, Cryska Barchenowa and Inia Sestina (aka the Scarlet Twins), who pilot a two-seater Su-37UB, during the September 21st 2001 Yukon Base Incident. Christopher carried the device in the back cockpit of his mecha (MiG-29OVT Fulcrum in the novelization; Su-47E Berkut in the anime), and activated it when the espers entered the Prafka state.
The attempt only succeeded in driving the Scarlet Twins berserk, whereupon in the anime they took remote control of the Christopher's Su-47E, ejected Christopher with the device in his escape pod, crushed Christopher's escape pod (with the device), took control of his machine and than continued on their rampage until eventually stopped by Yuuya Bridges. Shortly before going berserk, and after the device has been activated, the Scarlet Twins feel another, similar psychic presence. This presence is the other esper located inside the pod as she attempted to take control of the sisters. In the novelization, Christopher is still defeated by the berserked Scarlet Twins, but is not killed by them on the spot (instead, he is killed shortly afterward by the Scarlet Twins commander Jerzy Sandek).
On the pod in Russian is written "Fifth generation to the formula General purpose Control system", meaning the pod is designed for Fifth Generation espers and acts as a control system that allows the Esper inside to not only pilot a compatible TSF but also link with other espers, sometimes forcefully as was the case during the Yukon Base Incident, however the process is meant to link multiple consenting espers and their TSFs to create a highly sensitive, highly effective unit that transcends normal human limits in combat. The pods are designed to not only enhance the esper's normal psychic abilities but also help induce the Prafka and Nostroyka effects without the use of a standard catalyst. Espers interred in the pods are required to have their four limbs amputated, and are not meant to be removed once inside. It is essentially a suicide mission, although members such as Matika Barchenowa were volunteers for said procedure after it was developed.

Tactical Surface Fighters

Senjutsuki (戦術機, "tactical fighter"), or senjutsuhokousentouki (戦術歩行戦闘機, "tactical walking fighter aircraft"), are large bipedal machines, and are a primary weapon system used to combat the aliens known as the BETA in the BETA War World. In the alternate timelines of Unlimited and Alternative, the invasion of Earth by the BETA began in 1974. To circumvent the overwhelming anti-air superiority of the Laser-class BETA, TSFs were thus developed as all-purpose assault units, able to fight in urban areas, on uneven terrain, and 3-dimensional combat within the interior of BETA Hives[1] without their maneuverability being constrained in the heat of battle, following the successful deployment of bipedal mechanized units such as the Feedback Protector and NCAF-X1 used in the preceding First Lunar War. Since their first deployment in 1974, TSFs have become essential to humanity's survival over the 30-year war.
TSF movement is a combination of bipedal locomotion and thrust from their Jump Units.[2] Their legs and arms are moved with carbon actuators, superconducting bands of carbon-based material that expand and contract based on the electrical current passed though them; the electricity to power the carbon actuators come from a combination of batteries and magnesium fuel cells.[2] Jump Units produce thrust by processing specialized jet fuel, usually stored in the Jump Units themselves or in storage tanks in a TSF's legs. External tanks can be attached to a TSF for increased operational time and distance.
TSF mobility is further enhanced by their joint construction; the combined usage of carbon actuators and multiple joints structures in a single joint segment impart TSFs with high operating limits and shock-absorbing capabilities during battle.[3] One example is the wide-ranged rotational capability of a TSF's shoulders and elbows, allowing them to engage targets directly behind them even without gun-equipped Mount Pylons.[3] Sub-arms positioned underneath the shoulder-block armor allow TSFs a wide range of arm movement without interference.
Mobility is not just all that TSFs have, however; they are also armored in an anti-projectile and heat-resistant composite that has been further treated with anti-laser coating.[4] Armor on the upper body segment also aids in maneuverability by improving the active instability aspect of a TSF;[4] a higher center of gravity improves the execution time of maneuvers during combat. However, with the immense power wielded by the Laser-class BETA, armor protection for TSFs remains a low-return concept compared to attack avoidance.
Most if not all of the American, Soviet, and European TSFs are based on real-life fighter jets (e.g.- the F-22A being built by "Lockweed Mardin", a clear reference to Lockheed Martin). However, the people responsible for the design and manufacture of the real world's various fighter jets are not necessarily the same people who were responsible for the design/manufacture of TSFs in the BETA War World. TSF development can be split into three distinct generations, with each generation an indicator of their technology level and advancement. However, the generation standing is not a direct indication of combat strength in any capacity.
Tactical Surface Attackers are a variation on the Tactical Surface Fighter concept that have been adapted to carry massive firepower and armor volume, usually by sacrificing speed and maneuverability in their design. TSAs excel in clearing operations and establishing a beachhead in contested regions,[1] where their immense volume of firepower can easily stop the advance of the BETA head-on. Out of their niche area, however, TSAs suffer from low speed and low maneuverability, making them unsuitable for close-quarters combat, or tactical actions that require speed and precision. Currently, there are only three known series of TSAs: the A-6 Intruder, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the A-12 Avenger.

Trivia

Boy howdy this.. this trilogy.

  • In Muv-Luv Alternative Integral Works, regular Japanese forces units are designated with abbreviations beginning with JI (ie. JIMDF) rather than the IJ later seen in official works.
  • While Royal Guard units are designated JEG in Muv-Luv Alternative and Muv-Luv Alternative Integral Works, they are seen as JIRG (as well as BTL rather than bat for Battalion) in the Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse anime. It is yet unknown if this is a similar official update or an on screen display inconsistency.
  • The rank-based colors of the Royal Guard's Type-82 and Type-00 TSFs are based upon the Twelve Level Cap and Rank System used during the Asuka period of ancient Japan. Any similarities between the two are entirely superficial, however, and the Muv-Luv version seems to use the colors more as an indicator of an individual's heredity status than any actual rank system.
  • AMERICA - memetic fan reaction to the USA's actions.
  • The real-world Coast Guard remained under the Department of Transportation formed in 1967, until the September 11 attacks, when they were shifted to the Department of Homeland Security.
  • The real-world United States Space Force, its real life equivalent to the Space Corps, was founded in 2019.
  • The real-world Joint Force Command was disestablished on 31 August 2011.
  • The U.S Army Coat of Arms is an entirely fictional variant that uses the original Motto of the United States of America E pluribus unum (Out of many, one), changed in 1956 to "In God We Trust". It does, however, take many of its visual motifs from the Great Seal of the United States , which still shares the same latin phrase.
  • The named HSSTs of the UN Aerospace Force's 3rd HSST Fleet are named after actual historical warships. Neustrashimyy (Russian: Неустрашимый, mean "Fearless" ) can refer to either a cancelled 1950s Soviet prototype or the modern frigate class of the same name, Sawarabi was named after one of the Japanese Empire's Wakatake-class destroyers, and Yunagi was the ninth Kamikaze-class destroyer built.
  • Eilat was a name used for several Israel warships, Shiloh was a name used for two different types of warships and the La Fayette can either refer to the the well-known French stealth frigate type or other vessels of the same name.
  • In the Total Eclipse anime adaptation's translations, the term "Ensign" was inaccurately used to describe the rank of many of the UN test pilots in the series, regardless of nationality or affiliation. Traditionally, Ensign is used to describe a junior officer in some Western navies, and is only ever associated with naval aviators.
    • The more accurate term used by most militaries in the Muv-Luv universe, including the UN, is the 2nd Lieutenant: an equivalent junior officer rank that is used in most real-life armies. The superior rank is often abbreviated to simply Lieutenant, although it can also be described as 1st Lieutenant.
      • The Imperial Japanese Navy actually uses the Ensign rank, and it is equal in rank to a 2nd Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army. They even share the same term, Shōi (少尉), with the only differentiation being in the preceding term Rikugun (Army) and Kaigun (Navy).
  • In real life, the state known as Czechoslovakia was peacefully dissolved into the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in January 1993.
  • In real-life, the ROC Air Force does not operate any variant or model of the F/A-18 Hornet.
  • Integral Works refers to the UFC as the "Third United Front" and, on one occasion, the "Third Unified Front", after the historical First and Second United Fronts.
