The Getter Robo Saga is the timeline of the original Getter Robo. The saga goes through the events of the primary timeline. The differences began with the publication of the Getter Robo Go manga which served as a sequel to previous series whereas its anime version was a remake of the original series. It is also notable for building up the characterization of Getter Rays that appeared in later publications.

Primary Timeline

The Saotome Getter Ray Research Institute has completed a robot for space exploration, the Getter Robo.

Dinosaur War I

However, the Dinosaur Empire had risen from the depths of the Earth to retake the surface with their Mechasaurus robots. The power source of the Getter Robo, the mysterious Getter Rays are the only means able to combat them. The Empire's ruler Emperor Gore gives the order to prevent development of this energy source. So Dr. Saotome recruits three students from Asama High School: soccer captain Ryoma Nagare, loner Hayato Jin, and Judo captain Musashi Tomoe all of whom have a strong sense of justice and the ability to pilot the three high powered jets needed to form the Getter Robo and cooperate in the battle against him.

Near the end of the series, the shadow ruler of the Dinosaur Empire, Yura appears with his giant Mechasaurus weapon called Invincible Battleship Dai. Yura's attacks leave the Getter Team at a disadvantage so they attempt to use a three-staged attack using the Getter Machines armed with bombs to destroy it along with some help from anti-aircraft weapons. However due to Musashi's clumsiness the strategy failed and Ryoma and Hayato are injured.

With the group in a corner, Dr. Saotome and Michiru try a different strategy using Michiru's machine with a more powerful bomb as a sure fire suicide mission. But before Michiru can go, Musashi feeling guilty about his failure goes instead. However the Mechasaurus fought back and Musashi was unable to drop the bomb properly. But Musashi does not turn back and instead goes in for a suicide bombing attack that destroys both him and the Mechasaurus. His death was mourned by his comrades who honor Musashi as a hero.

Hyakki Empire War

With the death of Musashi and the Getter Robo no longer useful, a new threat in the form of the Hyakki Empire arises. To combat this new threat, the Getter Robo G is completed and a new pilot Benkei Kuruma is called in to fight in Musashi's place.

Dinosaur War II

About a year after the battle with the Hyakki Empire, the Getter team returns to Saotome Labs while dealing with the Dinosaur Empire. Later, a huge meteor comes crashing from the sky and the Getter Robo and Getter Robo G are powerless to stop it. The meteor, however, is revealed to, in fact, be their thought to be dead enemy Emperor Burai. With Burai putting up a fight, Dr. Saotome decides to unleash the newest Getter robot, Shin Getter Robo. The tables have turned but Burai tells the Getter team that he was revived by someone who bore a grudge against the Getter.

This same group continued to appear in an attempt to destroy the Getter Ray research having come from a future that was ravaged by the appearance of the Getter Emperor. Benkei attempted to fight off this new enemy in the Getter Robo G but was driven underground and the fission of Getter Energy had killed him while changing the Getter G in a slow but gradual process into something else entirely. Dr. Saotome begins to show obsessive behavior with the Getter Rays and even sees the spirits of fallen enemies and allies who have agreed to use the Getter to destroy the new threat.

During an experiment to test Shin Getter, Ryoma witnesses an apocalyptic future where humanity has taken to space in Getter machines headed by Getter Emperor. Here, the Emperor is shown as being on a scale where planets are threatened by its mere existence. Meanwhile, Hayato starts to take an interest in Getter Rays especially where the human element is involved while developing a Getter machine that runs on plasma rather than Getter Energy. Ryoma begins to have doubts about the Getter Rays but the prototype Getters suddenly begin to act on their own and Getter Dragon begins to sink deeper underground in its cocoon of Getter Energy. As the enemy army continues to attack, Shin Getter is used to push them back. Ryoma begins to question about Shin Getter and the future he previously saw.

Before Ryoma could fully confront Dr. Saotome, the mysterious enemy from before attacks again going after the evolving Getter Dragon. Ryoma and Hayato goes after them and manage to push them back with the power of the evolved Dragon. Shin Getter Robo and the enemy vessel are soon sent forward through time, where Getter Emperor destroys the comparatively miniscule vessel. Ryoma and Hayato ponder the meaning of this distant future, but are returned back to their own time. But even though the battle was won, the Saotome Institute is overwhelmed by Getter Ray radiation from the Getter Dragon's cocoon with everyone being wiped out. Only Ryoma and Hayato had survived to witness the deaths of all their allies.

Metal Beast War

Sixteen years after the battle with the Hyakki Empire and a fatal accident at the Saotome Institute, Hayato Jin and Dr. Tachibana have started a project with funding from the Japanese government called the Getter-Go project to find suitable pilots for the new Getter Robo to combat the Metal Beasts of the mad scientist Dr. Lando. The pilots recruited include highly skilled athlete Go Ichimonji, Dr. Tachibana's daughter and skilled swordswoman Sho Tachibana, and former Getter mechanic Gai Daido. Together they battle Dr. Rando's forces to prevent his plans for world domination.

When Dr. Lando threatens Japan to turn over the Getter Robo, the Getter team escapes to Alaska but encounter Metal Beast forces. With the Getter badly damaged from all of the fights it got in, they are eventually helped by an international team of super robot pilots including the white supremacist Schwartz Koff who has a high dislike of the Japanese population. With the battles between sides becoming more fierce, and Schwartz falling for Sho both groups work together in battle. With the battle won but the Getter Robo badly damaged Go and Gai go back to Japan on the Getter's only remaining jet while Sho stays behind to work with Schwartz in battle.

Dinosaur War III

But with the battle between Dr. Lando over, the scientist was betrayed by his second in command Count Rasetsu who is revealed to be an officer of the dormant Dinosaur Empire. With Dr. Lando dead, Emperor Gore's successor Empress Jatego takes command to retake the surface and destroy their biggest threat, the Shin Getter Robo. With help from Kei Minamikaze, Go, Gai, and Hayato manage to stop the bomb Metal Beasts from destroying the Saotome Institute and inside the facility is the Shin Getter Robo, a true Getter Robot and the cause of the accident fifteen years prior to the series. Hayato has Go and his companions go find Hayato's former co-worker Ryoma Nagare while encountering the mysterious Messiah Tahir.

With the Dinosaur Empire on the move and attacking the Institute, the group manages to ward them off by piloting Shin Getter. However Go, Ryoma, and Tahir are the only ones to keep their sanity and consciousness unlike Kei or Gai. Seeing Gai go insane and later absorbed by the Getter, Go decides to destroy the Getter but is convinced to do so after the battle is over especially with the Empire trying to remake Earth into their image. Go, Ryoma, and Tahir pilot Shin Getter for a final battle and manage to destroy the Empire's forces before having Shin Getter impact on Mars' polar cap which causes it to melt and start a terraforming process.

Plant Beast War

Taking place some time after Getter Robo Go, a mad scientist named Professor Jacov had become fused with highly evolved plants called Plant Beasts and had begun spreading them over the world. To combat them, the new director of the Saotome Institute, Hayato Jin, readies a prototype Getter Robo to fight them off and recruits three pilots. Two of the pilots Dan Amakusa (whose parents used to work for Jacov and were killed right in front of him) and Goki Hagane (who lost his friends and teacher to the Plant Beasts) encounter a young man named Tsurugi Ryuki a gifted fighter who lost his father and friends to the Plant Beasts and provides information on how to defeat them. With some convincing, Hayato allows Tsurugi to join their ranks in the battle against the Plant Beasts.

Later it is revealed that Professor Jacov is merely acting on the will of the Plant Beasts that have evolved due to Getter Rays. He is then betrayed by his son Manius Jacov who then awakens the ultimate Plant Beast, Getter Gaia. The battle with the Gaia is long and difficult with the Getter at a big disadvantage. But with the Getter Energy flowing in the prototype Getter evolved into a stronger form, Getter Robo Hien and manages to make a comeback. But the Getter Gaia was destroyed a machine with open hostility to the Getter Rays, Bug. Before Bug could damage the Getter, the Getter Emperor appeared. Tsurugi, understanding what was happening took the Hien into battle alone to fight off the other Getter Machines in this alternate reality.

Factions

Saotome Getter Research Institute

Saotome Getter Research Institute.

The Saotome Getter Ray Research Institute (abbreviated as Saotome Institute) is a laboratory located at the foot of Mt. Asama founded and owned by Dr. Saotome. It serves as the main base of the Getter Team.
Due to the research being focused on Getter Rays, the Institutes facilities primarily focus on using Getter Rays as an energy source as well as products that utilize Getter Rays including Getter Alloys and bombs. Its main focus has been the development of the Getter Robo. For security, it is armed with weapons such as the Getter Navalon Cannon that can destroy a Mechasaurus in one blast.
Dr. Saotome had discovered a source of Getter Rays near Mt. Asama and founded the Saotome Institute to study the mysterious new energy source. For years, he and his staff studied the effects of Getter Rays until the rise of the Dinosaur Empire forced them to use the Getter Robo for a battle against them. With the battle of the Dinosaur Empire raging on, the Saotome Institute was eventually wrecked and replaced with the New Saotome Institute.
The New Saotome Institute is the successor to the Saotome Getter Ray Research Institute after it was destroyed in the final battle against the Dinosaur Empire. It is also known as Fordham G in other official materials.
The New Saotome Institute is much larger than its predecessor. It also possesses more elaborate machines for its facilities such as a storage room deep underground. In the anime, the New Saotome Institute is outfitted with Getter Ray technology which depending on a certain call can have different effects. "Go Down" covers the lab with a dome of Getter Ray energy that boasts powerful defense and deactivates with the call "Go Up". The lab also features a Getter Ray amplifier that allows the laboratory to strengthen the Getter Robo G.
The New Saotome Institute was built to replace its predecessor with the battle of Dinosaur Empire over but the Hyakki Empire on the rise. The institute served as a base and a needed bit of assistance. In both the manga and anime it was decimated in the final battle with the Empire, but the manga had it been rebuilt after the battle until it was abandoned after the Shin Getter Robo's Getter Ray meltdown. With the Dinosaur Empire resurfacing, it was reopened and later put under the ownership of Hayato Jin.
After the destruction of the New Saotome Institute in the manga, the Saotome Institute is rebuilt with the staff stationing itself there. The development of the Shin Getter Robo took place as well as battles from invaders from the future. With the battle over however, the Shin Getter's Getter Ray fallout caused the Institute's staff to be annihilated. With the staff lost, the Institute was abandoned with the Shin Getter laying dormant there.
Years later the Saotome Institute would be reactivated with the Dinosaur Empire attacking the surface again. The Institute's use of the Shin Getter managed to stop the invasion and with the Shin Getter's sacrifice, Hayato Jin took over as director.
The Institute would once again be used to test and develop Getter robots and with the advent of the invaders coming back, the Institute recruited new pilots to fight the threat even making an alliance with its old enemy, the Dinosaur Empire.

The Tachibana Institute is a robotics lab under the direction of Dr. Tachibana in Getter Robo Daikessen !. It served as a business partner to the Saotome Institute, sharing technology such as the Getter Machines.
The Tachibana Institute's main directive is the production of robots for the greater good. While initially built to avoid battle, attacks from various sources forced the Institute to restyle their creations. Entering a partnership with the Saotome Institute and their resources in combat, the Tachibana Institute developed robots for battle including the Getter Robo Go.

Dinosaur Empire

Dinosaur Empire's Machine Land.

The Dinosaur Empire is a hidden civilization of evolved and sentient dinosaurs. After an influx of Getter Rays showered Earth, the remains of the original empire went into the magma of the planet in order to survive and one day retake the surface.
The Dinosaur Empire to ruled by a single monarchy with all known rulers being related to Emperor Gore. Its military is composed mainly of the Mechasaurus weapons that are piloted by soldiers with a ground army, an air force, and a navy. Each squads are commanded by captains and commanders of varying ranks. Many of the empire's soldiers do not fear death and in fact hold it as a pleasure.
The Dinosaur Empire rises from the surface to take it back from the humans who have evolved from the mammals that were on the surface with the Empire's absence. With all military weaponry little-to-useless against the Empire's military, the Getter Robo is called in to fight them. The robot was able to decimate their armies and destroy their forces at the end at the cost of one of their pilots.
However, in the manga timeline the empire still lingered and years later sent assassins before resurfacing after Professor Lando is dealt with to destroy their main enemy, the Getter Robo (specifically its current model Shin Getter Robo). But much like before, they are overpowered by the Getter Rays and are forced to retreat again.
With another time-skip, it is revealed that the Dinosaur Empire has entered an alliance with the Saotome Getter Ray Research Institute to fight the invading Andromeda Country and have developed a couple projects including using human DNA to make hybrids like Kamui Sho as well as the Gettersaurus. However, this was mainly used for the chance to destroy the Getter Robo as it is still the Empire's main threat. But after Kamui initiates a bloodless coup, he changes the plans to destroy humanity. What happens afterward is unknown.

Chiryu Clan

The Chiryu Clan is a special minority group in the Dinosaur Empire in the Getter Robo Saga. They possess special abilities and physiologies not usually seen in the usual Reptiloids. As a result they were treated as freaks and outcasts with their only occupation being anything ordered by the current Emperor.
The Chiryu Clan possess unique abilities among the Dinosaur Empire such as possessing several vital organs, an extendable horn, or even precognition. Appearances vary among the members but they all possess traits similar to other members of their species such as horns and special hides. Some common powers among the Chiryu Clan is a shapeshifting ability that allow them to disguise themselves as other for a seemingly unlimited amount of time.
The Chiryu Clan were assigned the role to destroy the Saotome Institute after many others failed. They manage to infiltrate and wound several workers including Musashi Tomoe. With most of their members defeated, their squad leader Neon pilots a Mechasaurus to take out the Institute. The Getter Team manages to mobilize the Getter Robo and in a difficult battle due to Musashi's wounds, they manage to defeat Neon and drive the Chiryu Clan back.
Several years later, a squad of shapeshifting members of the Chiryu Clan disguise themselves as the Getter Team and steal the Getter Robo G. The real Getter Team pilots the original Getter model and manage to overcome the odds and destroy the squad. By this time, the Chiryu Clan had become a personal squad under the emperor.

Hyakki Empire

Hyakki Empire's Fortress Island.

The Hyakki Empire is a military group composed of former humans that turned into Oni and lead by their leader Emperor Burai. Its origins varied by the way Burai gained his powers, but how the rest of the Empire came to be is unknown.
As mentioned earlier, the Hyakki Empire functions mostly on military power to achieve dominance over other civilizations including the Dinosaur Empire and humans. The army's main weapons are giant robots that depending on the media are either called the Hyakki Beasts or the Hyakki Robots.
When Burai was still human, he discovered a UFO (later revealed to be from the Andromeda Country) filled with technology that gave him his current form and power to create the Hyakki Empire. Reverse engineering the technology to build his army, Burai converted many people to his goal of conquest. Unfortunately, they were unable to fight off the Getter Robo G and its pilots, the only legitimate threat to their plans. When Atlantis appeared, and the empire unable to acquire their technology, they opted to destroy it instead. However, in an act of vengeance, the Atlanteans give the Getter Team access to their ultimate weapon, Uzahra. This along with guerrilla tactics allowed the Getter Team to destroy the Empire's fortress.
However, fragments of the empire had survived including a cybernetically revived Burai and a splinter group of scientists working the source of their technology, the Andromeda Country. Although the group lead by Carter McDonald was destroyed along with the Andromeda Country flagship, their final weapon Bug was activated to attack and destroy humanity.

Vega Zone

Professor Lando's Vega Zone.

Vega Zone is the base of Professor Lando located in the Arctic region. It serves as the command center of Prof. Lando's entire army.
Prior to either series, Vega Zone was originally a research facility with some of the best scientists gathered to study the G Ore found in the Arctic Circle in an attempt to revolutionize technology (anime) or the devolpment of technology for a better future (manga). In both circumstances, Lando started a hostile takeover in his plans for world domination forcefully recruiting most of the scientists there. Ever since it served as his base where Lando and his lieutenants commanded their actions.
Vega Zone hosts some of the most advanced technology including a plant that produces the Metal Beasts as well as communications that cannot be intercepted by any means.

Plant Beasts

Originally, Plant Beasts are special plants created by Professor Jacov to use them to cure people. However, Jacov eventually got the idea to use the plants to destroy humanity. Thus, Jacov created these special plants. Most of the Plant Beasts all started with a seed, once these seeds infected a human, the said victim will be devoured by the plant and will try to drag more victim into it as well, thus a single Plant Beast is enough to destroy an entire city, as evidenced by the first Plant Besst encountered by the Getter Robo. Plant Beasts variant in shapes, some of them are a bunch of disfigured face, some resemble a giant pillar, while some resemble insects. Plant Beasts are also controlled by Jacov via hive mind.
Eventually, after Jacov sucessfully obtained the Getter Core, Plant Beasts started to gain more abilities, such as emitting out corrosive liquid and release infectious spores.
As a conclusion, Plant Beasts are dangerous and destructive creatures that won't stop destroying humanity until they themselves are destroyed.

Armageddon Timeline

The plot opens some time after the Moon Wars, where things for the original cast have taken a turn for the worse. The main character and pilot of Getter-1, Ryoma Nagare, has been framed for the murder of the Getter Machine builder Dr. Saotome after the death of Saotome's daughter, Michiru. However, he is released from jail and is reunited on Earth—unhappily—with his old allies, Hayato Jin and Musashi Tomoe. They were summoned to fight none other than Dr. Saotome himself who has seemingly risen from the grave to threaten humanity with his ultimate creation—and most dangerous weapon—Shin Getter Dragon, a massive weapon powered by the same cosmic Getter Rays which gave life to their old weapons. However, their efforts to stop Dr. Saotome, not to mention an overzealous Japanese Defense Force who go to extremes, are in vain as the government launched nuclear weapons on Shin Dragon.

The resulting explosion and shock wave of Getter Rays wipes out 99% of the human population worldwide. Thirteen years after this catastrophe, as humanity clings desperately to life, the re-emerged Invaders threaten Earth once more. The only safeguard against this alien threat is a giant robot that emerges from the wreckage of the nuclear blast—Shin Getter Robo—piloted by an artificially created human named Go. With the help of Hayato's Super Robot Army and Go's co-pilots Kei and Gai, Shin Getter fights to keep humanity's dreams alive.

Later, Ryoma returns piloting the Black Getter to aid the new Getter team against Dr. Saotome who returns with Stinger and Cowen when Shin Getter Dragon re-activates and continues its evolution. It was also revealed that Kei was Dr. Saotome's younger daughter and Michiru's younger sister, Genki, who was adopted by Benkei. Soon the Invaders put their true plan into action by transforming Jupiter into a Getter Ray Sun and sending Ganymede, one of its moons, on a collision course with Earth; prompting both the old and new Getter teams to spring into action to save the planet.

Super Robot Army

The Tower has a large assortment of Super Robots at its disposal; most of them being mass produced replicas. Some of the super robots are limited produced like the Stilvas, Barozofus, Jikyos, and Stealth Bombers due to their more complex; while others are custom made for certain purposes. These super robots appear in the OVA series Getter Robo Armageddon and the video game Super Robot Wars Z2 (they appear when the Tower, and later Stilva use certain moves). They impersonate real robots, but are not. They were originally shown to be outmatched by the Invaders, but after going into space they turn the tides.
All of the super robots use firearms, but some of these super robots have unique weaponry. For example, a mech resembling a scuba diver uses a harpoon gun. These super robots are not fueled by Getter Rays, but they are all purpose machines. This allows them to be used for almost every situation.

Invaders

Invaders are parasitic entities born of over-exposure to Getter Rays. They typically resemble black reptilian-esque creatures with metallic teeth and claws on Earth and its moon, and resemble insectoid creatures as well as annelid-like creatures in the outer Solar System; but are capable of potentially morphing into any possible form. They infect both organic lifeforms and machinery and subvert them to their own twisted ideal of evolution. While humans become Invaders, mechs become known as Metal Beasts (a name borrowed from Getter Robo Go).
Invaders are capable of surviving in almost any environment, and possess the ability to immediately adapt to any environmental shift with the exception of environments bathed in intense Getter Radiation, like any area directly hit with a Getter Beam. This extreme adaptability comes with an instinct to consume everything that could hold a shred of use. Some Invaders, Cohen and Stinger especially, show an ability to adapt and thrive in environments which would normally either send an Invader into dormancy or kill it outright. Infected humans not only show maniacal obsessions with misconceived ideas of Darwinian evolution, but also display physical features associated with Invaders in either the area of infection or the first post-infection open wound. Infected machines typically display Invaders squirming out of open joints, with one notable exception.
Although individuals like Michiru Saotome and Dr. Saotome can apparently display some resistance to the infection process, the only way to deal with an infection is either stressing the new Invader with weaponry like a Getter Robo's physical weaponry or overloading the victim with concentrated Getter Rays to the point where they start to burst. Temporary means of dispatching Invaders include a presumably electric barrier that is installed in the Tower and freezing them with liquid nitrogen, although the former method lasts as long as power can be supplied to whatever generates this 'force field' and the latter requires handling a liquid that can be potentially as lethal as an Invader due to its extremely low temperature (the maximum temperature being 77K, -196° C, or -321° F); and the coating will eventually melt, as Benkei points out to Kei. Notably, the modified human known simply as Go can repel Invaders; although this is only shown in the third episode (likely due to a directorial shift between the first three episodes and the subsequent episodes).
The size of Invaders can vary between nanoscopic and that of an average gas giant of the outer solar system as displayed in both the various Invaders that melded with Getter Robo G to form Metal Beast Dragon and the massive beast seen at the end of the series that house the consciousnesses of Cohen and Stinger. Aside from twisted morals, the memories and personalities of any infected are preserved, as shown by Dr. Saotome, and his former coworkers who were dispatched 13 years prior by Cohen and Stinger.

New Timeline

Oni thought to only be from old legend have been appearing throughout Japan. Dr. Saotome, a researcher in the mysterious Getter Rays had started to create the Getter Robo to fight back against them. He just has to find the necessary pilots first. The first recruit was a street fighter in Shinjuku named Ryoma Nagare who gets wind of the Oni and joins in the battle to fight the Oni. The second was a terrorist named Hayato Jin who gains an interest in the Getter Rays. The third was the warrior monk Benkei Musashibō who owns a sword used by the legendary figure Minamoto no Raiko.

Together they face the Oni while delving into the mysterious power of the Getter Rays. Eventually they are sent back in time to the Heian Era where Raiko is and is in battle with the controller of the Oni, Abe no Seimei. With help from Raiko, the Getter Team manages to defeat Seimei but back home three years after their disappearance with a new lab things start to take a turn for the worse. During a test for an upgrade to the Getter, Ryoma is transported to an apocalyptic future where his friends have become fused with Getter Machines and are attempting to get the power of the Getter Emperor. After being brought back, Ryoma leaves the lab but Seimei returns in the form of a powerful Oni. With Seimei on the loose, Ryoma pilots the Getter again to fight back and manages to destroy Seimei.

After the battle some of the others start to doubt the Getter's power but with the threat of the Oni still present there are disagreements. Suddenly the ones who guided Seimei and the Oni appear, the Four Heavenly Kings. They attempt to destroy the Getter as it could destroy the planet and is a threat to them. The Getter Team face against them in a type of subspace while keeping the Getter Rays in check with three of Kings destroyed and their leader Tamonten destroyed by the appearance of the Getter Emperor. Wanting to fight against the Emperor and any other machine who tries to take that form, Ryoma leaves to combat them while the others go back home and think about the loss of their comrades.

Oni/Four Heavenly Kings

The Oni in New Getter Robo are a mysterious seeming offshoot of Humanity with an insatiable urge to murder and destroy all, with a particular hatred for anything related to the Getter Rays.
Small Oni are comprised of infected humans of varying sizes with little to no means of communication beyond guttural roars and yelps, with certain exceptions. The infection is caused by a non lethal wound of some sort, which later manifests itself as an excruciating transformation where the victim grows a horn or two somewhere on the head while the skin and eyes become discolored; the eyes are also engulfed by the now-yellow sclera (the whites in average humans). While certain victims with a strong will like Tatsuhito Saotome can temporarily resist the change, infection comes with a death sentence carried out by either completely destroying the body or destroying the cranium due to an Oni's regenerative properties that can oddly be stimulated by an electric surge in the correct places. While the Oni seem savage, they typically carry over their old memories to the point where they can handle piloting even the complex Prototype Getter Robo.

Larger Oni typically take on more imaginative and complex forms and are called forth by smaller Oni, but seem to show as much intelligence as their smaller "cousins". They initially have eyes similar to those of their smaller counterparts, but gain eyes closer to a human's after a larger Oni and a smaller Oni partake in an odd 'ritual' where energy flows from the horn of the smaller Oni to the larger one before the former human is devoured at which point the pupils and irises appear.

The exception for smaller Oni appear in the form of Abe no Seimei and his two 'handmaidens'; Seimei in particular. They show no horns and only have chalk-white skin as an indicator that they are not typical humans, physically speaking. Despite this, Seimei displays the ability to manipulate some type of energy as a barrier in a manner that resembles magic, and is durable enough to survive a Getter Ray-charged katana. When Seimei appears in the present, he appears bound along with his handmaidens to a larger type of Oni with his intelligence intact, and enough power to match Getter Robo with Hayato and Benkei piloting.

Of note is a statement by the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings faced at the end of New Getter Robo, that "The oni are the descendants of those eradicated by the Getter." While this statement explains their particular hatred for anything involving Getter Rays, it does not explain the Oni's infectious nature or how they came to be on Earth.

The Four Heavenly Kings are godly beings opposing Getter Rays and the potential futures their use with the Getter Robo can cause. Because of their actions of using the Oni and Abe no Seimei in their plans they serve as the main antagonists of New Getter Robo.

Neo Timeline

The Dinosaur Empire begins an attack on New York and Musashi Tomoe pilots the Getter Robo alone to fight them, while Dr. Saotome has finished a new and more powerful Getter Robo to fight the dinosaurs: Shin Getter Robo. With Ryoma and Hayato unable to do anything, Musashi sacrifices himself by detonating the Getter Core in Getter Robo to wipe out the Mechasaurus army; resulting in the annihilation of all of Manhattan, while Emperor Gore is almost killed and was put into a critical condition. With Emperor Gore still alive, Dr. Saotome is prepared to fight back, but the Japanese government stops him with a full warrant to control all research on Getter Rays to prevent another incident like in New York after being pressured from the international community.

Five years later, the Getter team went their separate ways, with Ryoma becoming a wanderer and Hayato building the plasma powered Neo Getter Robo to defend Japan as part of the government organization NASAR. He seeks out pilots for the robot, with Sho Tachibana and Gai Daido having been recruited off-screen, a test pilot is initially shown as having died in an explosion of a test Neo-Eagle forcing NASAR to find a new candidate. Hayato scouts out the young underground martial artist Go Ichimonji as the final pilot, helps him escape when the Dinosaur Empire attempts to capture him, and has Go pilot the Getter to destroy a Mechasaurus.

With the Getter Team complete, they fight against the returned Dinosaur Empire with help from the Texas Mack, an American Robot built as a special defense presumably against the likes of the Mechasaurs. However, as the attacks become more fierce and the empire goes to the shut-down Saotome Institute, the Getter team decides to unleash Shin Getter Robo due to Neo Getter Robo becoming damaged beyond repair after a battle with an army of prototype Getters piloted by dinosaurs.

Emperor Gore is fully restored and attempts to destroy Japan. The new Getter team, now armed with Shin Getter Robo, attempt to fight Emperor Gore who grows to gigantic size and his salvaged UFO. However; due to the UFO's initial shielding, Gore's enhanced power, and the pressure from the Getter Rays; the Getter team is pushed into a corner. However, with help from Ryoma and Hayato, they are able to utilize the Getter Rays to transform the Shin Getter into a stronger form and destroy Emperor Gore before escaping seemingly no worse for wear. With the battle over, Ryoma tells Musashi that everything is over.

The credits show images of Saotome Labs being rebuilt with Hayato supervising, Ryoma establishing his dojo, Michiru playing with Genki outside of the new Saotome Labs, Dr. Saotome in a group shot of his staff with Benkei Kuruma behind and to our right, Sho practicing her swordsmanship, Gai stuffing his face, and Go relaxing in a field with a plant in his mouth. The OVA ends with a group shot of Shin Getter Robo and Texas Mack, with their pilots, in front of a mountain.
