The series takes place in the year 2196. Earth is at war with a race of alien invaders called the "Jovian Lizards". A company called Nergal designs a space battleship, the ND-001 Nadesico. While the ship is powerful and its crew consists of the top civilian experts in their fields, these individuals tend to have "some slight personality disorders".

Setting

The War for Lunar Autonomy is a conflict featured in the backstory of the Martian Successor Nadesico television series.

The UEAF space fleet drove the rebel groups out at gunpoint. The scattered remnants disappeared, first to Mars, then to the Asteroid Belt and Jupiter. (Nadesico: "The Beginning of Nadesico's War")

The UE government eliminated all records of their existence, as if they never even existed in order to cover up their own role in fermenting the rebellion. and for other reasons as well According to Genichirou Tsukiomi, the Earth had justified the theft of their homes in the name of pacifying an unstable political situation. The survivors of the purge had settled on Mars when the UEAF attacked again. They used nuclear warheads to destroy the new colony. Additionally, Tsukumo Shiratori believed it was all part of a plan to keep the Earth profitable and under control. In the end, Jupiter and its satellites were the only place left for their ancestors to go, and that was where the Jovians found the artefact; a factory for the construction of phase transition engines and unmanned weapons such as the Grasshoppers, the Jiross and the Chulips. Discovering the plans in Jupiter's orbit gave the separatists the technical base they needed to survive. It also gave them the ability to build weapons for their revenge.

Several centuries in the future, Earth is at war with a mysterious alien species dubbed the "Jovian Lizards", who use immense hyperspatial gateways to instantly deploy remote-controlled troops from Jupiter. The war is going badly for Earth when a private defense contractor, the Nergal Corporation, decides to cut out the middleman and field its own battleship, the Nadesico. In addition to being the most powerful and advanced battleship that Nergal has ever produced, they hire the top civilian operatives in each field to be its crew, who turn out to be a ragtag bunch of Bunny-Eared Lawyers.

Nergal Heavy Industries

Nergal assists the United Earth government with their war against the Jovian Lizards attacking from the planet Jupiter, which have annihilated the UE military forces on Mars and captured the planet. Conventional weaponry proves useless against the invaders, and so a new type of battleship must be created; the ND-001 Nadesico, armed with the same weaponry and defenses used by the Jovian forces. However, though the ship was commissioned by the UE, it remains the property of Nergal, which has its own plans for the vessel and its crew: Project Schiaparelli, named for the astronomer who named the seas and continents on the Red Planet.

Nergal's first interest was to itself; to that end, the Nadesico was created to break through the massed Jovian forces and re-capture technology and research from Nergal laboratories which were abandoned when Mars was occupied. One of the revelations made on the planet was that the Nadesico itself was not fully realized by Nergal. An ancient vessel which had crash-landed on the planet was discovered by the corporation. Realizing its technological value, Nergal built a facility around it, and the design of the Nadesico and all future ships in its class, the Nadesico-class were based on this ship. However, the Nadesico was overwhelmed by a massive attack and heavily damaged, forcing its desperate retreat from the planet using a Jovian transporter device. Learning of this failure, the chairman of Nergal made the decision to formally ally the company with the UE and integrate the Nadesico with the military for the time being.

Technology

Dimensional Jump Gate

Dimensional Leap Gates are unmanned spacecraft featured in the Martian Successor Nadesico television series. Known as Chulips to Nergal Heavy Industries and Untied Earth, they were used by the Jovian Federation during the Jovian War.

The true name of the Dimensional Leap Gates was first revealed when Tsukumo Shiratori took prisoners, Haruka Minato and Megumi Reinard, on a tour of his ship and encountered Genichirou Tsukiomi (whom Tsukumo believed had died). Genichirou was confused by the term "Chulip" used by Minato, Tsukumo explained to Genichirou that she meant the Dimensional Leap Gates.

Phase Transition Engines

The Nadesico derives its propulsion from a combination of four nuclear pulse engines and a pair of phase transition engines.

The phase transition engines is an incredibly powerful system apparently engineered by Nergal based on ancient Martian technology. It is not merely a powerplant but an advanced temporal/spacial manipulation device which generates graviton particles by harvesting the potential energy of the para-space-time dimension.

However, it only reaches its full output in a total vacuum, with an altitude of at least 20 thousand kilometers above Earth being necessary for peak performance. For transit within atmosphere at lower altitudes, the Nadesico relies on its far less powerful and advanced nuclear pulse engines.

Gravity Blast Cannon

The Nadesico's primary weapon is the gravity blast cannon, a massive gun which occupies most of the center of the ship's main hull. Supplied with power directly from the phase transition engines, this gave it the capability of destroying a conventional technology fleet with a single shot. A huge amount of power is needed to fire the weapon, and since the phase transition engines can only operate most efficiently in vacuum or near-vacuum, it sometimes becomes impossible to fire the gravity blast cannon repeatedly at low altitude, as happened when the Nadesico was attacked by a fleet at the remains of Mars' Utopia colony.

Distortion Fields

The Nadesico's main protection against attack is its distortion field, a projected warp in space around the ship which deflects or neutralizes energy and gravity weapon fire. It has only a limited effect on physical attacks. Throughout most of the ship's early engagements against Jovian forces, the distortion field rendered the ship virtually immune to damage.

Later, the ship's head technician Seiya Uribatake expanded on the concept to create the distortion block, a system of small distortion fields within the ship which serve to compartmentalize sections of the ship to prevent the spread of damage.

Omoikane

Omoikane (思兼 Omoikane?) is the artificially intelligent ship's computer. It is named after the Shinto god Omoikane.

Ruri Hoshino and Akito Tenkawa saved Omoikane from being "reformatted" by the UEAF (who were now allied to Nadesico, but who suffer grievous losses through attacks launched by Omoikane, which remembers the UEAF as enemies) and stop it from attacking the UEAF, and we see that Omoikane likes Gekigangar III as well. Omoikane takes the form of a tree in the virtual reality landscape. The tree mirrors various legendary trees of knowledge and life. Akito trims a few branches to remove the part of Omoikane's memory that identifies the UEAF as the enemy.

The Japanese phrase 重い鐘 ({{{2}}}?), which has the same pronunciation "omoi-kane", means "heavy bell". Sporadically, a logo is displayed for Omoikane, including the shape of a Japanese bell.

IFS

The IFS (Image Feedback System) is the system used by pilots to operate Aestivalis robots in Martian Successor Nadesico. An injection of nanomachines produces an IFS implant in the pilot's hands, allowing the control globes in an Aestivalis cockpit to read the pilot's motions and respond accordingly as though the machine was an extension of the pilot's body. A side effect of the IFS is a slight increase of aggression in the pilot, but most UEAF and Nergal pilots are capable of exercising control without too much effort. However, subjects who are already mentally unsound can become extremely aggressive if implanted with a nano-controller, such was the case with Admiral Sadaaki Munetake, who injected himself with an implant and hijacked an experimental Aestivalis model to attack a friendly ship that he mistook for a Jovian ship.

Aestivalis

Aestivalis are a series of humanoid combat mecha. Designed and built by Nergal Heavy Industries, Aestivalis frames are highly advanced machines and capable of operating in a variety of fields. The basic unit is fully equipped with a multitude of gadgets including rocket forearms connected with high-tension cables, high-speed treads on the rear of their feet, and hand-to-hand combat weapons.

Aestivalis are exceedingly light-weight and maneuverable, due in large part to battle frames lacking an onboard engine. Aestivalis use slave generators which siphon power directly from whatever ship or base they're deployed from. While drastically cutting down on weight and augmenting agility, Aestivalis frames must remain inside a certain distance from their base or ship. If passed beyond the energy transfer point, the power supply is cut off and the machines become inactive. Their feather weight and speed are also due to their composition of hardened ceramics and ultra-hard resins. No metal is found anywhere in their chief frame.

Aestivalis typically use propulsion systems based on a two main engine model with multiple apogee motors. Depending on the specific unit, additional thrusters may be added. All Aestivalis are modular, capable of being stripped down and outfitted with mission-specific gear. They are incredibly tough and versatile machines.

Zero-G Frame

A variant of the standard Aestivalis frame designed to operate in the void of space. It has an increased thruster array, farther energy transfer range than the standard unit, and a battery which can power the frame if the energy transfer link with the mothership is severed. The battery's maximum charge is 10 minutes; however, it can be rapidly depleted with heavy thruster and shield use. To conserve power, the Zero-G frame has a sleep mode which takes effect during downtime.

Air Combat Frames

An Aestivalis frame built specifically for long-term atmospheric flight and high dexterity. It is equipped with a powerful array of thrusters and large wing-like surfaces. The wings are not used to attain flight, but provide increased aerial maneuverability.

Heavy Artillery Frame

The heavy weapons variant of the Aestivalis is the largest of the Aesti frames. It is thickly armored and equipped with a massive arsenal of howitzers, rockets, and mortars, but because of this extra weight, it is extremely slow and incapable of flight.

Lunar Surface Frame

This frame is essentially a mecha for a mecha; a standard Aestivalis will have the Lunar frame outfitted over it. IFS reaction time is slowed due to the extra weight, but on the plus side, the Lunar frame is equipped with its own phase-transition engine, allowing it to last longer in the field without a power feed and granting it extra firepower in the form of a gravity rail gun. In addition to the rail gun, this model also carries anti-ship missiles. It can easily match a Jovian Gekigan-class mech or even take out a warship.

Trivia

  • This show was ubiquitous forever and then suddenly nothing. Thanks, Prince of Darkness. You asshole.
  • If you think I should use the better Prince of Darkness designs, lemme know. I can use those, but for now going with OG.
