Jumpgate Technology

Asgard's variation of Crossgate Technology, only for use by individual ships instead of massive spacetime distortions, for better control over who and where they are used for.

Origins

Crossgates are the Balmary Empire's primary way of interstellar travel. Their unimaginably advanced technology has allowed them to develop collapsible worm holes which can open at any point, linking one part of space to the next with a single gateway between them, allowing travel between galaxies in the span of minutes, and between quadrants in days. They were the Balmar Empire's most potent means of invasion until the Aerogaters encountered the Vector president and CEO, Wilhelm.
Because of this, Ingram Prisken stole the plans and brought them to the founders of the Asgard Station, and they reverse engineered it into more manageable, energy wise, versions, which would however require a ship, leading them to develop the Sleipnir as a mode of transportation. Ships which later joined Asgard have been outfitted with their own Jumpdrive Systems.

Capabilities

Crossgate Technology allows for travel between universes, dimensions, even alternate realities, as demonstrated by Shadow Mirror. Distance and location do not matter once one gets the ability to harness a Crossgate, with only quadrant travel taking more than a few hours at most. The sheer size of a Crossgate can allow a whole fleet to travel from one point to the next in a matter of minutes or hours, as discussed, though the energy requirements for that kind of gate are astronomical.
A Jumpgate, however, will only transfer the ship and force it to 'jump' to the next destination, along with everyone inside it, obviously. The Jumpgate signal is thus less powerful and less noticeable, until the ship has already appeared, unlike Crossgates, which will open before either side is breached by definition. Due to the heavy power demanded by the Jumpgate, most robots cannot accommodate it, however any starship should have the space and resources to do so. The basic technology is the same, however, and all that a Crossgate can do, a Jumpgate can do as well, but on a generally smaller scale.
