The Garmillas-Earth War was an intergalactic conflict between the Earth Federation and the expanding Great Garmillas Empire. Garmillas forces dominated their adversaries for most of the war with superior technology and available military resources, and pushed Earth and the human species toward extinction. With the covert intervention of another civilization, humanity was able to fight back and eventually bring an end to the war.

History

Nearly all humans believe that the Garmillas attacked entirely without warning or mercy. However, a few select people such as Admiral Juzo Okita know that, in fact, the United Nations Cosmo Navy was ordered to fire on the Great Garmillas Imperial Astro Fleet. The Garmillas, meanwhile, due to the threat of their population suffering from a decline on their home planet, had selected Earth as a new home planet for terraforming. This deadly first contact would see a series of devastating attacks on Earth and equally heavy defeats in space for the UNCN as the technological advantage of their opponents proved overwhelming.
Consolidating many ships, the UN Cosmo Navy launched a counterattack against the Garmillas over Mars and with their numbers managed to push the technologically superior invaders from the inner Solar System. However, this came at a massive loss of ships and sailors, so the UN hoped this would buy them time to rebuild their fleet. Instead, the aliens simply moved their focus to avoid another costly space battle and resorted to the use of deadly irradiated planet bombs launched from their facility on Pluto. This drove the humans from the surface into underground cities, where pollution and lack of resources seemingly all but doomed their race to a slow, agonizing extinction.
A ray of light came in the form of unexpected communications between the distant planet of Iscandar and Earth, with a representative in Yurisha Iscandar, sister to Queen Starsha, arriving to aid humanity. The proposal was that Iscandar would provide an incredible technological boon to reset Earth back to its livable state: the Cosmo Reverse System. However, humanity would have to travel to Iscandar to obtain it and then bring it back to Earth, so Starsha would send her other sister Sasha with another piece of technology, the wave motion core, to gift humans with warp travel. To make sure this gift would not possibly fall into enemy hands, the UNCN made one last, desperate plan.
Codenamed "Operation M," this was an all or nothing gambit on the part of the exhausted human fleet, to use the last ships of the First Fleet to act as a distraction for the Garmillas forces while the special package was retrieved from Iscandar. The bulk of the fleet was led by Okita commanding the Kirishima. The ensuing engagement was brief and one-sided as the Earth ships were wiped out with little damage to the Garmillas fleet. By the time the Iscandarian vessel was detected burning towards Mars, only Kirishima.

The Yamato (BBY-01) (ヤマト, Yamato) is a United Nations Cosmo Navy space battleship, and the inaugural vessel of the Yamato class. First conceived as an evacuation ship for survivors fleeing the Garmillas-Earth War, an unexpected gift of highly advanced wave motion technology from the planet Iscandar convinces the leadership of the United Nations Cosmo Force to use it in a more ambitious and dangerous plan to save all life on Earth from extinction. During its first year of service, Yamato and its crew also become involved in the Garmillas Civil War, bring an end to the war with the Great Garmillas Empire, discover the legendary world Shambleau, and make first human contact with the Gatlantis Empire.

Great Garmillas Empire

The Great Garmillas Empire is an intergalactic empire governing the Garmillan people. The empire has spread far from its homeworld, the planet Garmillas, to encompass the entire Large Magellanic Cloud, much of the Small Magellanic Cloud, and parts of the Milky Way Galaxy. Its expansion has been driven in part by military conquest and the absorption of other peoples into the empire.
The city of Baleras on the planet Garmillas served as the capital of the empire, although Baleras II briefly became capital during the Battle of the Imperial capital. Beyond Garmillas and its star system, the territory of the empire is divided into districts, such as the Nord Greater District, where the planet Alteria is located, and the Small Magellanic Greater District. The Annexation Administration Ministry manages the districts and dispatches Garmillan governors to administer them. Single planets are also administered by planetary governors called Consuls. As of 2199 the office of colonial governor of the Milky Way Galaxy was vacant and excercised by the central government, Major General Gremdt Goer planned to acquire the position while he served as Galactic Theater Commander.
Under the Desler administration imperial territory continued to expand by the annexation of other species and civilizations, sometimes through wars waged by the massive Great Garmillas Imperial Astro Fleet, the space navy branch of the Garmillas Imperial Defense Force.[16][17][18] The empire also worked to colonize unpopulated places. When a world that the empire desired was not habitable, it would "Garmillasform" it, altering its environment and seeding it with various life forms from Garmillas supplied by a network of floating continents[16][19][20]. While the end of Desler's regime brought an end to the expansionary campaigns the territory that had previously been conquered by the empire remained under its control, this lead some individuals to believe that "Desler's Hegemonic spirit" still loomed over the nation and that for change to happen the government needed to be deposed by force.
During both the Desler administration and the successive governments the Head of state was backed by a series of ministries, such as the Food Production Ministry, the Ministry of Resources and Labour, the Annexation Administration Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of National Administration, the Ministry of Ammuniton, the Department of Defense, the Department of Internal Affairs, the Department of State.[11][12][14][22] Legislative power is held by the Garmillas Imperial Diet, the nation's parliament.
The people of the Great Garmillas Empire are organized into a two-tier system of citizenship. Members of the Garmillas species are placed into the first tier; most aliens occupy the second tier and enjoy far fewer legal and social rights, even as they were required to demonstrate loyalty to the empire. On rare occasions, individual members of these other species can distinguish themselves through service or some other means and be rewarded first-class citizenship. This system remained in place even after Desler's fall. The Garmillas National Security Police serves as the nation's main police organization although during Desler's reign it was organized under the umbrella of the Imperial Guard, threatening the authority of the police and turning it into little more than an extension of the guard itself.

Desler Administration

The Desler administration, also called the Desler regime or Abelt Desler's dictatorship, was the dictatorial government of the Great Garmillas Empire from its founding in 2188 until the Battle of the Imperial Capital. It was characterized by increasing tyranny and a series of expansionary campaigns under the aggressive philosophy of the Desler Doctrine. Abuses of power from the Imperial Guard, the violent repression of dissenters, rampant xenophobia, and the clash of ideologies between aristocrats, moderates, and hardliners were commonplace during the administration.

The Imperial Guard, also called Desler Imperial Guard, was a paramilitary organization of the Great Garmillas Empire created under the Desler Regime. Created from Desler's private protection service, it rapidly expanded and became the main homeland security force within the empire, operating as its secret police and intelligence service, even holding control of the National Security Police. Eventually, the Imperial Guard rose to the point of rivaling the enormous military might of the Imperial Defense Force, with Director General Hydom Gimleh plotting to have his organization fully replace the regular forces.
Despite being Desler's primary tool for maintaining unity through the empire, and his most staunch supporters, the Imperial Guard supported the principles of Garmillan superiority in contrast with Desler's policy of assimilation and co-existence with second-class citizens of conquered planets.

Garmillas Civilians

The Garmillas, also known as Garmillans (GArmillon, Garmillon), are an ethnic group of the Galman human species that emigrated to the planet Garmillas. As the founders and leaders of the Great Garmillas Empire and the Garmillas Grand Duchy that preceded it, the species has become the dominant race in the Large Magellanic Cloud and territories beyond.
The Garmillans originally lived on planet Galman, where their biological evolution was influenced by an ancient alien civilasation known as Archelias, which discovered the species' homeworld and seeded it with its own genetic material. Thousands of years before 2205, the people of Iscandar's empire decided to abandon their physical bodies to crystalize themselves inside of Sanctel. To continue their military campaigns in their absence, they selected the Galman people to do their bidding in the physical realm. The Iscandarians surreptitiously abducted a group of Galmans. This group, led by a king of their own, was sent on a harrowing, brutal journey through space. They suffered many casualties before arriving at a seemingly perfect copy of their homeworld that was Iscandar's twin planet. The Galmans are unable to live for extended periods of time outside of the unique habitat of their home planet, thus the Iscandarians had used the Cosmo Reverse System to recreate a copy of Galman on Iscandar's barren twin. This natural attachement the Galmans had to their new world effectively rendered them unable to leave Iscandar's side, additionally, the Iscandarian manipulated their new servant species to have an almost fanatical reverence towards them. They promptly named their servants and their planet "Garmillas", which in the Iscandarian language meant "Galman apes".
Planet Garmillas was divided among aristocratic and royal families up until the unification of the species under the Garmillas Grand Duchy in year 2170. The nation however remained highly unstable and broke out in a bloody civil war in year 2184. Abelt Desler, young scion of the noble Desler family, which had ruled over the Grand Duchy, set out to reunite the planet under his rule. His reign began in year 2188 with the foundation of the Great Garmillas Empire, and was driven by secret knowledge that the planet Garmillas was dying. He courted Queen Starsha of Iscandar, proposing the unification of his empire with the small but still powerful remains of hers to bring order and "salvation" to the universe under his banner.[23][24][2] The empire's campaign of conquest also grew harsher, and control of the Garmillan people tightened considerably under the empire's secret police force, the Imperial Guard. The old aristocracy of the empire was greatly marginalized under Desler's rule.

Garmillias Imperial Defense Force

The Garmillas Imperial Defense Force is the military branch of the Great Garmillas Empire and one of the most powerful military forces in the known universe. Following the founding of the empire in 2188 up until the fall of the Desler administration, the Garmillas Imperial Defense Force led a series of expansionary campaigns in accordance with the Desler doctrine, unifying the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and expanding into the Milky Way. Despite its incredible size, the growing territory it had to control led the Imperial Force's resources to be stretched thin, weakening it and giving power to the Imperial Guard, a paramilitary organization that threatened to take the place of the regular armed forces.
The Garmillas Imperial Defense Force is the military arm of the Great Garmillas Empire. It's headquartered at Imperial Headquarters. There, are seated the two highest bodies of the Defense Force: the Imperial Supreme Guidance Council and the Imperial Defense Force High Command, which is charged with commanding and overseeing the entirety of the armed forces. During the Desler administration, Abelt Desler served as both Eternal Leader and High Commander of Imperial High Command, effectively giving him direct control over the military complex.
The Imperial Force operates two main branches: the Central Army and the Astro Fleet; alongside them stand Defense Force Operation Command, and the Imperial Defense Force General Staff. The latter is headed by the Chief of Staff and their deputy, and has command over all Area Armies and the Police Fleets, such as the 8th Security Fleet. Operation Command is tasked with defining the Imperial Defense Force's operational plan. During the Desler administration, the positions of Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff were filled by Col. General Nerun Keeling and Lt. General Ghader Talan. The High Command also has direct command over the Balun Naval Base, Alien Volunteer Corps and the Central Intelligence Department, although the latter was under the control of the Ministry of Propaganda and Information during Desler's rule. Following Desler's fall it was replaced by the Garmillas Security Intelligence Agency, under the control of the Department of Internal Affairs.
Outside of the general staff and the commanders of the two branches, another critical role within the military hierarchy is the Head of Operations charged with directing all military operations following the operational plan. During the Desler administration, this position was occupied by General Dahl Histenberger. The Imperial Defense Force works in collaboration with the Department of Defense, and the Weapons Development Agency, which supplies it with weaponry. Under Desler, they were both headed by Welte Talan as Minister of Armaments and Secretary of Defense.

UX-01 Dimensional Submarine Crew

A Dimensional Submarine is a special combat vessel in service in the Great Garmillas Imperial Astro Fleet that is capable of operating not only in normal space, but also of travelling and navigating between different dimensions. Dimensional Submarines navigate in normal space with the same Geshtam engine used by all other Garmillas ships, during dimensional submergence the special Gesh Vual engine is used. The submarines are equipped with a multi-dimensional phase ballast tank to suppress the outflow of waste propulsion energy in subspace, and by diverting it, it controls the hull's ascent and sinking. By 2203 the dimensional diving technology had evolved and now produced a blue hue instead of a more instable red one, by the same time a specialised equipment that allows dimensional submarines to carry a non-submersion capable vessel down in subspace had also been developed. The dimensional submarines are equipped with 8 torpedo launchers, two installed on the bow, two in the stern which are capable of hitting targets beyond the dimensional barrier, 8 missile launchers installed in the neck of the ship and on its upper surface, 1 positron turret on the forward deck, 1 laser cannon behind the ship's sail and 5 space mine laying devices on the rear deck.

Zaltz are a sapient species originating from the planet Zaltz, located within the borders of the Great Garmillas Empire. The planet Zaltz and its people were annexed into the Garmillas Empire at some point in the past, and remain a part of the empire in 2199. The overwhelming majority of Zaltz are classified as second-class citizens of the empire, although a few are elevated to first-class status as a reward for distinguished service.

Jirel

Jirel, also known as Jirellans, are a species of sapient telepaths. In the distant past, the Aquarius race visited the Jirel homeworld and introduced genetic material that would shape the Jirel people, similar to their intervention in the evolution of life on many other worlds. Unlike other species, though, the Jirel discovered remnants of the Aquarius culture left behind after their disappearance. One of these remnants was the "celestial ark" known as Shambleau, a massive structure built to wander the cosmos and spread humanoid life.

Iscandar

Iscandar is the fourth planet of the Salezar system along with Garmillas, inside the Large Magellanic Cloud. Much like the planet Garmillas in recent years, Iscandar was once the center of a vast and aggressive interstellar empire that dominated the Large Magellanic Cloud through destructive force. The empire eventually underwent radical reforms and withdrew from all of its conquered territories, and the Iscandarian population shrank nearly to extinction, but Iscandar itself remained nearly untouched by outside forces. The palace of Iscandar's ruler and the grounds surrounding it were kept in exemplary condition by robots similar to Garmilloids in service of the Great Garmillas Empire.
Iscandar's isolation began to end when Garmillas leader Abelt Dessler visited the planet and proposed a political union to Queen Starsha Iscandar. As the relationship between Starsha and Dessler soured, the queen extended an invitation to the besieged planet Earth to send a ship that would take possession of a device that would enable their world to heal from years of Garmillas assaults. In early 2199 CE, the space battleship Yamato began its attempt to reach Iscandar, and arrived months later.

The Gatlantis Empire, sometimes known as the White Comet Empire, is a major military power in the Milky Way Galaxy, the Small Magellanic Cloud, and intergalactic space in the late twenty-second and twenty-third centuries. The Gatlantis Empire operates from a massive mobile space fortress, the Ark of Destruction, the adopted home of the Gatlantean people and the center of their culture. At the height of its power, the empire wages a massive and merciless war against all intelligent life it encounters at the behest of its leader, Emperor Zworder.

Telezart

Telezart (テレザート星): a planet just outside our Galaxy featured in the second season, Telezart was once an interstellar hub, home to many and diverse forms of life from other star systems. However, a devastating world war broke out between the various racial groups, provoking a telepathic woman named Teresa to use her immense powers to destroy all life, an act she regrets. In the second season it is the objective of the Yamato to reach Telezart and learn from Teresa of the menace of the Comet Empire. Teresa ultimately uses her psionic powers to self-destruct the planet in an attempt to destroy the White Comet. While the planet's detonation did not destroy the White Comet as Teresa had hoped, it did inflict tremendous damage on the Comet Empire, as well as blowing it far off its intended course toward Earth. This gave the Yamato more than enough time to reach Earth first and warn the Earth Defense Council, allowing them to mount a counter-offense against the White Comet's arrival.
